Every winter season, I feel a rush of emotions and memories flood back as I look at the old scarf my mother used to wear. It was a simple woolen scarf, frayed at the edges and a bit faded in color, but to me, it held a world of meaning.
My mother was a hardworking woman. She would wake up before the crack of dawn to prepare breakfast for the family, then rush off to her job at the local factory. Despite the long hours and tiring work, she always managed to come home with a smile on her face, ready to listen to our stories and help us with our homework. I remember how she would wrap that scarf around her neck on cold mornings, as if it were a shield against the harsh elements.
One Christmas, I decided to save up my pocket money to buy her a new scarf. I spent hours in the store, carefully choosing one that I thought would match her eyes and bring out the warmth in her smile. When I finally presented it to her, her eyes lit up like stars. She immediately put it on and proudly showed it off to my father and siblings, as if it were the most precious gift she had ever received. But even though she had the new scarf, she still kept the old one, saying that it held too many memories to let go.
As the years passed, the scarf became a symbol of our bond. Whenever I saw it, I would think of the countless times my mother had comforted me with a hug when I was sad, or cheered me on when I was facing a challenge. She was my constant support, my rock in the stormy sea of life. Friends would come and go, but my mother was always there, ready to offer a kind word or a shoulder to cry on.
Now, I am a father with two kids. Whenever the winter winds blow, I take out that old scarf and hold it close to my heart. It reminds me of my mother's love, unwavering and unconditional. And I realize that the best gifts in life are not the ones that are bought with money, but the ones that are wrapped in love and memories. Just like my mother's scarf, which may be worn out and old, but to me, it is a treasure that I will cherish forever.

The ocean covers approximately 70% of Earth's surface. It's the largest livable space on our planet, and there's more life there than anywhere else on Earth. Through exploration. we' re learning more about its biological, chemical, physical, and geological aspects. Exploration leads to discovery, but before we can truly explore, we must map.
Seafloor mapping provides a sense of what may lie beneath and guides decisions about where to explore. While the entire seafloor has been mapped using data collected from satellites, these data provide only a general picture of what's there. Detail is limited on these maps, so some important geographical features like seamounts and objects like shipwrecks(失事船只) remain unseen.
As of 2023, 24.9% of the global seafloor had been mapped with modern high-resolution technology, usually fixed on ships, which can reveal the seafloor in greater detail. While almost 50% of the seafloor beneath U. S. waters had been mapped to these modern standards, the nation's seafloor is larger than the land area of all 50 states. Thus, there's still a significant amount of seafloor left to be mapped at high resolution.
More is known about the seafloor than the species that call the ocean home. Seafloor maps can provide information about potential habitats, but they can't identify species on the seafloor or provide information about how they interact with each other and their environments. Scientists estimate there may be between 700,000 and 1 million species in the ocean. Roughly two-thirds of these species have yet to be discovered or officially described, with almost 2,000 new species accepted by the scientific community each year.
We have a great deal more to learn about our ocean and what lives in it, but progress is being made. We learn more and more each year. But the ocean will never be fully explored. Earth is constantly changing, and it's important to understand these changes given the importance of the ocean in our everyday lives.
28. Why is seafloor mapping important for exploring the ocean
A. It reveals all objects on the seafloor. B. It shows the seafloor in greater detail.
C. It guides decisions about where to sail. D. It provides a general picture of the earth.
29. Why is the seafloor beneath U. S. waters mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To stress the further task of mapping the seafloor.
B. To explain the standards of mapping the seafloor.
C. To illustrate the geographical features of the seafloor.
D. To highlight the significance of mapping the seafloor.
30. What do we know from the seafloor maps
A. The quality of seawater. B. The environment of the ocean.
C. The likely homes of sea species. D. The exact number of sea species.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. How can the seafloor be mapped B. What species are living in the ocean
C. Why is it important to map the seafloor D. What difficulty is there in exploring the ocean
D
A few weeks ago, a well-meaning professor tried to explain the physiological process behind viruses and the human body in a tweet(推特) and was immediately criticized for a mistake in his information. He then issued an apology and deleted his erroneous tweet.
Communicating science beyond the academic bubble is necessary to boost public understanding of health and environmental issues and helping individuals make well-informed personal decisions.
However, scientists who engage in science communication must acknowledge that even in their area, their expertise is deep but narrow. They need to recognize the restrictions in their own knowledge. That is not to suggest that they only write or present on their own research, but rather, that they consult with an expert if the topic is outside of their discipline. Fact-checking with a scientist who works in the specialty will prevent the unintentional spread of misinformation, and the process of doing so may yield tiny pieces of interesting new information that can be incorporated.
Some have argued that the public is not educated enough to understand scientific information, especially for any complex phenomena, but this is absurd. Science instruction can be found at all levels of public education with most secondary schools offering classes on biology, physics, and chemistry. If anything, social media has shown that the public longs for knowledge based on a solid scientific foundation. Even the public discourse(话语) that follows most scientific articles shows that online readers can understand even the most puzzling of scientific principles.
It is equally necessary to emphasize that being an expert on a topic does not automatically make a scholar qualified to communicate it to a nonscientific audience. A number of scientists recently have been offering public-aimed explanations of scientific phenomena. Even though they have appropriate titles, they often do very little in the way of explaining. One biologist shared a complex analogy(类比) involving a library, books, paper, a recipe, ingredients, and a cake to explain the process behind vaccines. Any explanation that requires a written key to keep track of what each item represents is not a clear example for public consumption.
Science communication is a science in and of itself. It requires rigorous training and instruction. A scientist should take communication courses that can teach a person how to identify and eliminate jargon(术语) and how to develop effective analogies to explain complex concepts. One cannot assume communication expertise— imagine if someone just decided that they were a physicist and started trying to contribute to the field without the necessary background. Doing a poor job communicating science to the public will only create confusion and widen the gap between science and society, a gap that scientists are trying to close.
32. What does the author advise scientists do to deal with topics outside of their specialty
A. Explore them from new angles. B. Turn to professionals for help.
C. Use information from diverse sources. D. Double-check with colleagues in their field.
33. What does the author mainly tell us in paragraph 4
A. The public's understanding of science is much better than some have claimed.
B. Scientific articles have gained increasing popularity among the general public.
C. Modern technology has facilitated communication between scientists and the public.
D. A solid academic foundation is essential to understanding puzzling scientific principles.
34. What does the example of the biologist sharing a complex analogy show
A. It is vital to have appropriate titles to explain scientific issues.
B. It is helpful to use illustrations in explaining scientific phenomena.
C. A learned scholar is not necessarily a qualified science communicator.
D. A nonscientific audience cannot correctly understand principles of science.
35. What does the author suggest scientists do to bridge the gap between science and society
A. Develop communication skills. B. Take courses in public speaking.
C. Make appropriate use of scientific terms. D. Explain complex concepts scientifically.

Last Sunday afternoon, I was reading a book and had just come to the most interesting part when my little brother, Tex, rushed into my room. “Look at these cool paper airplanes I made!” Tex exclaimed, throwing one directly at my head.
Annoyed, I asked him for some peace and quiet so I could continue reading. “Ooh! I want to read!” said Tex. He climbed onto my bed and eagerly asked if I could read the book out loud to him. I replied that I didn't want to read out loud.
Sensing my bad mood, Tex decided to cheer me up. He dashed out of my room and returned a minute later, dumping a basket full of stuffed animals all over me. “A teddybear picnic!”
“No, Tex, not today.” I got up, dragged myself to the living room and flopped into the chair, feeling grumpy(暴躁的). Tex stood in the doorway, a disappointed look on his face.
Although I knew Tex was just trying to help, I couldn't shake off my bad feelings. Just then, my friend Ollie arrived, excitedly holding a brand-new basketball. He suggested that we head to the park and try it out.
Feeling too absorbed in my bad mood, I sighed and told Ollie that I was too busy being in the world's worst mood to do anything at all. Curious about my annoyance, Ollie asked what had happened. I told him Tex had interrupted my reading and for some unknown reason, it had put me in a really grumpy mood. Ollie then mentioned that when he was in a bad mood, he liked to move his body.
“I'd love to move,” I said. “To a tropical island!”
“Not that kind of move!” Ollie said “I move my body. You know, skateboard, basketball, go for a walk, and do jumping jacks. Exercise makes me feel e on!”
I sighed, thinking that exercise was the last thing I wanted to do in my grumpy state. But Ollie's words echoed in my mind, and I realized that maybe he was right.

That is not to suggest that they only write or present on their own research, but rather, that they consult with an expert if the topic is outside of their discipline.(他们需要认识到自己知识的局限性。
33. A。 根据文章第四段“Some have argued that the public is not educated enough to understand scientific information, especially for any complex phenomena, but this is absurd. Science instruction can be found at all levels of public education with most secondary schools offering classes on biology, physics, and chemistry. If anything, social media has shown that the public craves knowledge based on a solid scientific foundation. Even the public discourse(话语) that follows most scientific articles shows that online readers can understand even the most puzzling of scientific principles.(有人认为,公众受教育程度不够,无法理解科学信息,尤其是复杂的科学现象,但这种观点是荒谬的。各级公共教育中都可以找到科学教学的内容,大多数中学都开设了生物、物理和化学等课程。如果说有什么不同的话,那就是社交媒体表明,公众渴望获得基于坚实科学基础的知识。甚至大多数科学文章后的公众讨论也表明,在线读者能够理解甚至最令人困惑的科学原理)”可推知,公众对科学的理解比一些人声称的要好得多。故选A。
34. C。 根据文章第五段“It is equally necessary to emphasize that being an expert on a topic does not automatically make a scholar qualified to communicate it to a nonscientific audience. Any explanation that requires a written key to keep track of what each item represents is not a clear example for public consumption.(同样必须强调的是,成为某个主题的专家并不意味着该学者就有资格向非科学受众传达该话题。
35. A。 根据文章最后一段“Science communication is a science in and of itself. It requires rigorous training and instruction. A scientist should take communication courses that can teach a person how to identify and eliminate jargon(术语) and how to develop effective analogies to explain complex concepts.(科学传播本身就是一门科学。它需要严格的培训和指导。科学家应该参加沟通课程,这些课程可以教授如何识别和消除术语,以及如何发展有效的类比来解释复杂的概念)”可知,作者建议科学家为了缩小科学与社会之间的鸿沟应该接受沟通技巧训练。故选 A。
36. E。根据后文“Creativity is the key to the door of expression, no matter what form of creativity you choose. It could be painting or anything that brings interesting things out. 37. B。根据上文“Feeling discouraged and frustrated about something (对某事感到气馁和沮丧 )”可知,上文提到感到气馁,推测本句是在给出解决办法。故B选项“做一些有创意的事情可以帮助你摆脱坏心情”符合语境,与下文 it呼应。故选B。

39. C。根据上文“Creativity has been proven in extensive research to relieve both stress and anxiety. Sometimes, among life's responsibilities, we forget that we need and deserve downtime and self-care.(广泛的研究已经证明,创造力可以缓解压力和焦虑。有时候,在生活的责任中,我们忘记了我们需要并且值得休息和自我照顾)”以及后文“It’ s like a cure for your mental health.(就像治疗你的心理健康一样)”可知,上文提到了“在生活的责任中,我们忘记了我们需要并且值得休息和自我照顾”,推测本句是在说明创造力在自我照顾方面的作用。故C选项“发挥创造力可以让你在这方面得到更多所需”符合语境,故选C。
40. G。根据上文“When you think creatively and overcome challenges, you' re proving to yourself that you're a capable person. Creativity plays a part on your way to self-recognition.(当你创造性地思考并克服挑战时,你就是在向自己证明你是一个有能力的人。创造力在你自我认知的道路上扮演着重要的角色)”可知,上文提到创造力有助于自我认知,即本句对此进一步解释,指出创造力可以帮助对自己有更加深刻的了解,认识到自己的优缺点。故G选项“在这条漫长的道路上,创造力让你意识到自己的优势”符合语境,故选G。

第二节
【参考范文】
Unwillingly, I agreed to go to the park with him. When we arrived at the park, Ollie handed me the basketball and challenged me to a game of one-on-one. At first, I was not in the mood, but Ollie kept on encouraging me. As we dribbled and shot the ball, I found myself slowly getting into the game. Focusing on it, I began to feel a glimmer of joy and excitement. After a while, we were both laughing and enjoying ourselves. The fresh air, the laughter, and the joy of playing basketball made us forget about the time.
At sunset, I was on my way back home, tired but no longer in grumpy mood. When I entered the house, Tex looked up at me with eager eyes, yet hesitated to approach. “Hey, buddy.” I smiled at him, ruffling his hair. “How about reading the story to you before bedtime ” Tex’s eyes lit up, and he nodded excitedly. That night, Tex climbed onto my bed once again, snuggling up beside me, content to listen to the story quietly. I couldn't help but feel grateful to Ollie, who helped lift me out of my negative emotion and allowed me to enjoy the moment.

Most people have heard of Wall Street. It is a street in Manhattan, New York City, with the world's most famous trading center. It doesn't trade products, only money and shares. It's so well-known that the name Wall Street often refers to all the banks and capital markets in the U. S. Wall Street has an interesting history. It was given the name, because it ran along a high wooden wall built in 1652, when New York was still a Dutch colony.(17) The wall protected the city against the British army. In 1789, the first president of the U. S., George Washington, took office in the Federal Hall in Wall Street. After this, the president moved to Philadelphia, and eventually to Washington D. C. It wasn't until the end of the 18th century that Wall Street became one of the financial centers of the country.(18) This happened after the U. S. had won its independence from Great Britain. New York became its first capital, although it was replaced by Washington five years later.(19) In 1817, the New York Stock Exchange officially opened its doors.
