One day in Finland, six hungry beasts went walking. There was a squirrel, a hare, a marten, a fox, a wolf and a bear. They were looking for food in the woods.
“I need a good feast of meat.” Growled the bear.“The only meat here is us," said the marten. “Surely you wouldn't eat a friend ” The bear thought for a moment. “We could just eat the smallest one,” he said. Everyone looked at the squirrel, who was the smallest. She scurried up a tree, “Goodbye, my friends,” she said. The hare was now the smallest. Without a word, he jumped into a snowdrift and disappeared.
The wolf looked at the fox, who was now the smallest. “I'm very sorry, Fox,” said the wolf.
The fox didn't run away. He smiled and said, “I understand. Don't eat me here, though. I'd like to be eaten on the mountaintop." The wolf and the bear agreed. On the way, he whispered to the wolf, “Tell me something, wolf, when I'm eaten, what will you have for your next dinner ” This simple question upset the wolf very much. He quickly said, “Dear brothers, stop. Can we not live together as friends We can take turns in hunting.”
“What a wonderful idea,” answered the fox. Reluctantly, the bear agreed.
On the fifth day, it was the fox's turn to hunt. He walked onto a road and lay on the ground. He pretended to be dead. Very soon, a crow(乌鸦) flew towards him. She hopped towards the fox and stooped forward to peck at his tongue. The fox snapped. He caught the bird by the wing.
The crow said, “Well done, clever beast. You have caught me when many others have failed. Now, may I suggest you drop me over this cliff It will make me very tender to eat.” This idea pleased the fox. He dropped the crow from the edge of the cliff(悬崖). As soon as the fox let her go, the crow soared up into the air. She hovered just out of reach and laughed.

The Good, the Bad, and the AI
Artificial intelligence is so ubiquitous(无处不在) now that it some-times feels strange to think of it as something new and groundbreaking. And yet, it seems as if some new breakthrough related to AI is emerging every other week.
That has good and bad influence for us as a species. I’ve heard from plenty of writers, illustrators, filmmakers, and other artists who view AI as a threat to their livelihoods, for it’s an exaggerated simulator that mimics true creativity and artistic innovation thanks to being trained on the efforts -and the intellectual property-of a multitude of others.
While those concerns are real, we can’t ignore the fact that machine learning is also a powerful tool for good, one whose potential has hardly been developed. In this issue we spotlight the efforts of scientists who are using AI to help “decode" the patterns in the human brain responsible for speech, as you’ll see in “We Want to Hear Your Thoughts.” AI tools, paired with the hard work, discipline, and insights of dedicated researchers, have brought us to the very brink of technology that would have been considered the stuff of science fiction just a few short years ago.
Undoubtedly, ethical concerns exist in the realms(领域) of AI-assisted research, especially when a new development could have profound effects for basic human needs and rights, including privacy. But such work can also provide life-changing benefits——in this case for people with medical conditions that inhibit their ability to speak or otherwise communicate with others. Critics (and fantasists) love to conjure a sci-fi future where machine overlords and sentient software threaten the existence of humankind. But it's important to remember the benefits that breakthrough tools such as AI can bring, and as you'll see in the story, that balance of risk and promise is something that scientists must always strive to keep top of mind.
8. Why can AI be viewed as a threat to plenty of people’s livelihoods
A. Because it can finish many tasks and even come up with new things through practicing.
B. Because people spent lots of time in training it to imitate what human beings do.
C. Because it can make innovations and make efforts to train a multitude of people.
D. Because it has been trained in intellectual property by a multitude of professionals.
9. The author use the sentence “We Want to Hear Your Thoughts” in paragraph 3 to_______.
A. Make a comparison. B. Make a further explanation.
C. Set an example D. Make a short summary
10. Which word can replace the underline word “inhibit” in paragraph 4
A. improve B. limit C. control D. create
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. AI is especially benefit to the people with medical conditions.
B. The development of AI will surely threaten the existence of people.
C. We should remember the good that AI bring though it has shortcomings.
D. It is useful to learn the sci-fi future that critics and fantasists predicts.

Animated feature(动画电影) "Ne Zha 2" has surpassed 2021 war epic "The Battle at Lake Changjin" to become the highest-grossing film of all time in China.
As of 1:25 pm Thursday, this animated film's box office revenue had exceeded 5.77 billion yuan (about $804.84 million dollars), achieving the milestone in just eight days and five hours, according to ticketing platforms Maoyan and Beacon. This feat hasn't happened with any other animated film, especially those more dependent on their worldwide acclaim like Disney or Warner Bros.
The film's exceptional(出色的) earnings are not only setting new records but also strengthening China's position as a powerhouse in the animated cinema space, which is often dominated(支配) by Western studios like Disney and Paramount. If its momentum continues, Ne Zha 2 will become the biggest film ever in a single market.
The film is also the fastest IMAX release to surpass 100 million yuan in China.
"Blockbusters(大片) are back in China, in a bigger way than even the most optimistic among us could have imagined," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX.
It is currently going to launch in Australia and New Zealand on Feb 13, and in the US and Canada on Feb 14.
Global audiences witness Chinese filmmakers telling Chinese stories through the lens of Chinese aesthetics and values, where tradition clashes(冲突) with modernity, and East meets West in mutual(共同的) appreciation.
The animated blockbuster is encouraging the world not to depend on major showbiz industries to bring them their best titles but to be independent and cultivate masterpieces of their own, showing that they can dominate the box office on an unparalleled scale(无与伦比的规模) as well.
12. Why does the author mention Disney and Warner Bros in paragraph 2
A. To emphasize that Disney and Warner Bros are not independent.
B. To let readers know their films are praised all around the world.
C. To suggest that "Ne Zha 2" has had a big difference to the world.
D. To highlight that the box office revenue of "Ne Zha 2" is awesome.
13. What can we learn from Rich Gelfond’s words
A. "Ne Zha 2" is the most optimistic blockbuster now in the world.
B. China is going to make more blockbusters than ever before.
C. The popularity of "Ne Zha 2" is beyond all people’s expectations.
D. Some people have imagined more methods to improve the film.
14. Which statement is NOT true according to the last paragraph
A. The animated blockbuster will lead foreign films to break records of box office revenue in the following years.
B. The animated blockbuster could be a role model of not relying on other large companies to become successful.
C. The animated blockbuster made great difference in the field of movies and govern the box office on its own.
D. The animated blockbuster has shown to the world that Chinese film has the ability to greatly dominate the box office.
15. What is the best title of the passage
A. "Ne Zha 2"——The Amazing Box Office
B. "Ne Zha 2"——Blockbuster Comeback
C. "Ne Zha 2"——Praised by The World
D. "Ne Zha 2"——The Chinese Aesthetics

Last year Roche, a Swiss pharmaceutical(药的) firm, published a review of the clinical trials on neurological(神经学的) drugs it had held between 2016 and 2021. It found that black people were under-represented in all but one. Surprisingly, that news represents progress, because it shows that trial organizers are becoming more aware of a dangerous bias that sets back the safety and efficacy of medical treatments.
___16___—children, for example, or people with physical or learning disabilities, pregnant women and the elderly. For such groups, participation has stalled(停滞) or even reversed. ___17___, such as the difficulty of getting informed consent or the potential harm to unborn children.
Yet the consequences can be absurd(荒谬的). A recent review found that half of trials around the world testing hip-fracture(髋部骨折)interventions excluded people who lived in nursing homes, were old or had some level of cognitive impairment(认知障碍). Though these groups make up almost a third of all patients suffering hip-fractures, ___18___. Their doctors face an unpleasant choice: prescribe anyway, with uncertain results; or deny their patients new treatments.
A shocking example of such exclusion is of people with Down’s syndrome(唐氏综合症). ___19___, including recent trials of lecanemab and donanemab, the first drugs against Alzheimer’s that seem to slow the progress of the disease. This is despite the fact that those with Down’s are highly likely to develop it. Yet without data from trials, doctors will not prescribe them the drugs, for fear of unknown side-effects(副作用).
Obtaining informed consent for trials is not always easy, ___20___. Accounting for different groups’ risks of side-effects can complicate the analysis of the data. And some groups mistrust doctors because of a history of mistreatment, which makes recruiting them harder.
A. There are good explanations for the exclusion
B. especially from people with learning disabilities or dementia(痴呆)
C. it is unclear if the interventions will work as safely or as effectively on them
D. it makes doctors feel bored and annoyed to communicate with these people
E. Many trials exclude certain groups, and do so deliberately
F. They have long been left out of clinical trials
G. Certain people can’t face clinical trials

How much do your colleagues get paid In a few countries, such as Norway, you can take a good guess by looking at public __21__ on individuals’ overall tax payments and income. But in most places, finding out people’s salaries means asking them what they earn. And that is about as socially acceptable as saying“What an __22__ baby.”
In a recent study Zo Cullen of Harvard Business School and Ricardo Perez-Truglia of the University of California, Los Angeles, offered monetary rewards to employees of a South-East Asian bank if they were able to accurately estimate the __23__ of some of their peers. New transparency laws take effect in Illinois, Minnesota and Vermont this year; an EU __29__ is about to come into force in 2026.
A recent review by Ms Cullen into the effects of all this sunlight reveals a mixed picture. Greater transparency about what people in __30__ jobs are earning has helped __31__ pay gaps between men and women. This is not because lower-paid employees were given big pay bumps, however, __32__ because average wages were suppressed(镇压,禁止). Many years ago, legend tells us, Prince Llewelyn lived in a strong castle in the high mountains of North Wales. The prince was very brave and well respected by everyone. Proof of this was the prince’s dog, Gelert, which was a gift from King John of England. One of the prince’s favorite sports was hunting. Whenever he went hunting, Gelert went with him; the hound was always by his side or at the front of the pack. Gelert was a fearless friend and the prince trusted him completely.
Prince Llewelyn had known great sadness in his life. His wife had died giving birth to their son and the prince was brokenhearted. He had promised his wife, as she lay dying, that he would love, look after and protect their son forever. Gelert loved the baby too and spent many hours sitting at the bottom of his cot(婴儿床), watching him sleep and keeping him safe from harm.
In order to eat, the prince had to go hunting regularly. One day, he was preparing to go out into the forest to try to catch some deer. He went to his young son’s room to say goodbye. The baby lay in his cot, sleeping peacefully. Outside it was freezing cold, but the room was kept warm by a huge fire and the baby had lots of thick covers over him. Llewelyn pulled his cloak(斗篷) tight around his shoulders as he headed towards the heavy wooden doors that led outside. Something made him stop. He could not say what it was but he felt something was not right.
The prince went back into his son’s room. Everything seemed as it should be but still something troubled him. He made a decision. Today, Gelert would not hunt with him. Today, the dog would stay in the castle and look after the prince’s baby. “You are my most loyal, trusted and faithful friend. Look after my son until I return tonight.”
