Since 1975, the Ironguard has been a long-standing tradition in the Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. Each year, the last week of the program is marked by this event. Junior lifeguards(JGs), parents and swimming enthusiasts alike gather at 1st Place and race all the way to the end of the sand at 72nd Place in the beach.
●The course is made up of four miles of running and two miles of swimming. Registration begins at 8:00 am for all participants.

Important Note
If for some reason your children do not finish the Ironguard, they are required to tell a lifeguard on the beach before they leave. For safety reasons, we need to make sure every child is accounted for.
Many experienced parents or other supporters will run the course with their children. Don't worry, you can also choose to rest while they swim. If you do run with your JG, please stay out of the way of other participants.

Change is something that has always excited Dr Lori Piowlski, who embraced new online methods of teaching. However, she didn't always want to be a teacher. “I often said I would never be a teacher,” says Piowlski. “I grew up where a lot of my family members were teachers. I honestly didn't want to do what everyone else in my family had done. I wanted to be a lawyer.”
Despite her wish to follow a career in law, she couldn't ignore her “true” calling in life. “I started teaching piano when I was in high school,” says Piowlski. “I loved every minute that I spent with my students, watching them grow and struggle. I think you learn the most when you face your struggles and that is one of the things I want to instill(灌输) in my students. I want to say it's OK to struggle. It's OK to have that conflict inside of you that says this is hard, learning hard— but that's when you grow the most. So I think that piano teaching gave me that and instilled the love of teaching in me.”
While at college, she reflected on her time as a piano teacher and realized she had to follow her calling to teach. “I gave in to my calling and became an educator,” says Piowlski. “After graduating, I found a contract and taught my first class in first grade in California.”
Piowlski stayed there for 14 years, teaching special education and general education to students from pre-K level all the way through to 12th grade. She then moved back to Minnesota to raise her children. While taking this career break, Piowlski decided to study for her PhD.
“I got my PhD because that's something I'd always wanted to do and I wanted to show my kids that with perseverance(坚持) you can do anything,” says Piowlski. “They were in school, so' it wasn't easy.” Anyhow, she managed to graduate with determination and support from family members.

Playing a musical instrument or singing could help keep the brain healthy in older age, UK researchers suggest. In their report, published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, they say music should be considered as part of a lifestyle approach to maintain the brain.
More than 1,100 people aged over 40, with an average age of 68, were studied. Scientists observed their brain function data, looking at the effects of playing an instrument, singing, reading and listening to music.
The researchers compared the cognitive(认知的) data of those in the study who engaged in music in some way in their lives, with those who never had. Their results showed that people who played musical instruments benefited the most, which may be because of the “multiple cognitive demands” of the activity.
“Playing the piano or keyboard appeared to be particularly beneficial. Simply listening to music did not appear to help cognitive health. The benefit seen with singing might be partly because of the known social aspects of being in a choir or group,” the researchers say.
“Because we have such sensitive brain tests for this study, we are able to look at individual aspects of the brain function, such as short-term memory, long-term memory and problem-solving,” lead author Anne Corbett said.
“Playing an instrument has a particularly big effect, and people who continue to play into an older age saw an additional benefit,” she said. “Our brain is a muscle like anything else and it needs to be exercised, and learning to read music is a bit like learning a new language.” In the study, people who read music regularly had better numerical memory.
“The message is around how people can proactively reduce their risk of cognitive decline or dementia(痴呆), and really thinking about engaging with music as a way of doing that,” Anne said. However, she added, “It would be naive to think taking up a musical instrument would mean you won't develop dementia.”

Solar and wind energy are transforming how we power our world, but to fully use these renewable sources, we need reliable and affordable batteries to store energy. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison(UW-Madison) have taken a step towards this goal by inventing a water-soluble chemical additive that enhances the performance of bromide aqueous flow(溴化物水溶液) batteries, a promising energy storage solution.
Current large-scale energy storage relies on lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries, which have limitations like safety concerns, risk of fires and reliance on complex international supply chains. In contrast, aqueous flow batteries could offer a safer and more sustainable alternative. These batteries use water-based liquid that circulate over electrodes(电极) separated by a membrane(膜).They are scalable and less dangerous than lithium-ion batteries.
Bromide, a cheap and widely available ion, could replace expensive vanadium in flow batteries. However, bromide-based batteries face challenges: Bromide ions can pass through the membrane, reducing efficiency, or form a messy oil or poisonous bromine gas, making them impractical for large-scale use.
To tackle these issues, the UW-Madison team, including Patrick Sullivan and GyohunChoi, developed a new additive called a“soft-hard zwitterionic trapper”. This additive packages bromide ions, keeping them water-soluble while preventing them from passing through the membrane or forming harmful byproducts. As a result, the battery becomes more efficient and stable.
With the additive, the researchers achieved remarkable results: The batteries lasted almost two months without performance decay, compared to just one day without it. “For green energy storage, durability is critical. These batteries need to function for 10 to 20years,” says another researcher.
Moving forward, the team aims to refine their discovery. Choi will explore fundamental science, while Sullivan, now CEO of a renewable energy startup, will work on commercializing the additive, already proven to be producible on an industrial scale.
