Nicholas Sparks is an American novelist known for his best-selling tales of romance (浪漫) and heartbreak.
Sparks grew up mainly in north-central California, where his family moved when he was eight. He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel. In 1988, he graduated with a major in business and held a variety of jobs. In the early 1990s, he and his wife, Cathy Cote, settled in North Carolina, which later provided a setting for his novels.
While working his day job, Sparks continued to write. He cooperated with former Olympic runner Billy Mills on Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding. The book, which was inspired by a Native American legend, was published in 1990. Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best-seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996. By the time the film adaptation (改编) was released in 2004, Sparks had published seven more novels.
Although Sparks’s fiction usually involves love stories, he rejects the suggestion that he is a “romance novelist”. His supporters agree that Sparks explores more-serious subject matter, such as loneliness, sadness, and loss, and that many of his books feature less-than-happy endings. That is also evident in his only nonfiction work, Three Weeks with My Brother, in which he and his brother, Micah, share their own emotional responses to the deaths of their parents and sister.
Sparks has devoted much of his time and literary profits to writing programs at Notre Dame and to charitable causes, most notably the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, which he and his wife established in 2011.
24. What led Sparks to write his first novel
A. A scholarship. B. His marriage.
C. An accident. D. His major.
25. What do we know about The Notebook
A. It arrived in cinemas in 2004.
B. It was written by two authors.
C. It became a hit due to a report.
D. It was Sparks’ nonfiction work.
26. Why isn’t Sparks a romance novelist
A. His stories have nothing to do with love.
B. He prefers to record real events in lives.
C. His books never end with happiness.
D. He pays attention to various themes.
27. Which words can best describe Sparks
A. Lucky and careful. B. Tough and caring.
C. Honest and brave. D. Tolerant and calm.

You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats Well, science now has a definite answer. It’s dogs. That’s the conclusion of an international group of researchers, who found that dogs have twice as many neurons (神经元) as cats. Neurons are cells that deal with information. And so, the more neurons an animal has, the better its information processing capability, these scientists say.
The study was carried out by researchers from six universities in the US, Brazil, Denmark and South Africa. It’s going to be published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. The research was done in the lab of Suzana Herculano-Houzel, an associate professor of psychology and biological sciences at Vanderbilt University.
Until recently, scientists interested in comparing intelligence across species were limited to using brain size as a sign. “In 2005, my lab came up with a very simple, quick and inexpensive way to count the cells in brains and brain parts,” Herculano-Houzel said. What the researchers did was take some brain matter and basically turn it into a soup. This freed up the cell nuclei (细胞核) so that the scientists could count them directly under a microscope.
This is what they found when they looked at the cerebral cortex of cats and dogs. The cerebral cortex is the part of the brain that processes information. A cat’s cerebral cortex has 250 million neurons. A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million.
When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons. “So, it’s plausible to say that dogs have about twice as many neurons as cats in their cerebral cortex,” she said. “And this means that dogs can do more thinking things than cats.”
28. What does the author imply about the old debate
A. It was surprising B. It was meaningless.
C. It was easily solved. D. It had no clear result.
29. Why did the researchers turn some brain matter into a soup
A. To wake up neurons. B. To study brain growth.
C. To see neurons clearly. D. To study cortex better.
30. What affects the neuron numbers of dogs
A. Practice. B. Weights. C. Thinking. D. Lifestyles.
31. What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph
A. reasonable. B. important. C. surprising. D. fearless.
D
Simple songs are used to teach children important life skills in fun ways. These songs have the power to affect your child’s life forever: You likely remember songs from your childhood that taught you life lessons and new words that you can probably still recall to this day. Likewise, the use of songs in everyday activities can improve your child’s ability to learn and memorize new information.
The rhythmic (有节奏的) structure of language is present in music and speech. When your child sings songs they will pick up on natural and unnatural rhythms. Pauses and stressed syllables (音节) or words are used in conversations to express emotion, and stress key points in conversations. Songs and rhymes can be used to remember many kinds of information. Music floods into all areas of the brain, allowing itself to be stored in multiple memory locations. The ability to retain information is increased when the child stores memories into multiple areas.
Children learn language quicker through songs rather than lectures. Singing contributes to short-term phrase learning for unfamiliar terms. If your child is young, singing can be an excellent way to teach them unfamiliar words and phrases. These short-term memory exercises are repeated to turn the learned language into long-term memory.
Research has found a significant link between beat-keeping and the ability to read. When your child keeps a beat, they use the same parts of the brain that are responsible for hearing sounds of speech and linking them with letters.
There are small differences in spoken language that can greatly impact the ability to read in young children. Consonants (辅音) such as “b” and “p” can be difficult for a child to distinguish the difference on paper, but their learned ability to associate small changes in songs can help them understand the difference between the consonants while reading.
32. Why are simple songs powerful for children
A. They teach special skills.
B. They have lasting effects.
C. They improve singing skills.
D. They develop deep thinking.
33. Why are songs good for language learning
A. They are more interesting than talks.
B. They helps with long-term memory.
C. They teaches difficult expressions.
D. They makes repetition achievable.
34. What may happen if a child fails to maintain a beat
A. Loss of hearing. B. Bad writing habits.
C. Poor reading skills. D. Less speaking fluency.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Songs in child development. B. Songs and consonants.
C. Songs and brain areas. D. Rhythms in language.

How to Feel Better About the Way You Look
If you feel insecure about the way you look, you aren’t alone. 36 They can easily contribute to feelings of insecurity. If you would like to become more confident about your body and looks, there are steps you can take to change how you think about your body.
Accept what you dislike about your body while loving it overall. 37 It is not realistic to expect yourself to love everything about your body at all times. Learn to accept what you do not like without focusing on it. Be able to compartmentalize (隔开) to a degree by loving your body overall, even when you know it’s imperfect.
Practice positive self-talk. If you feel bad about yourself, you may find yourself putting yourself down a lot. You may engage in negative self-talk, which means you find yourself saying things to yourself like, “I can’t believe how fat you are” throughout the day. Try to replace negative self talk with positive self talk. 38
Provide your body with nourishment (营养). Many people with low self-esteem (自尊) try dieting or healthy eating as a means to change their bodies. 39 Think of healthy eating as a way of nourishing your body instead of a way of forcing your body to change.
40 If you’re feeling poorly about yourself, support is important. Seek out friends and family members who are positive. Try to spend time with people who feel good about their bodies and are generally positive.
A. Turn to people around you for help.
B. Surround yourself with supportive people.
C. People have things about their bodies they dislike.
D. Eating aims to give you a good mood instead of making you look good.
E. People read a huge number of messages about beauty standards every year.
F. You may feel unnatural at first, but it raises your sense of self worth in the long run.
G. Eating right can help you feel better about yourself, but do so with the right attitude.

I was always the kind of person who tried hard to please everyone around me. Whether it was my classmates, teachers, or family members, I went out of my way to make them happy. I would agree to do things I didn’t really want to do, like lending my favorite books that I was still reading to classmates who asked, or sacrificing my own study time to help others with their homework.
One day, my classmate Lily asked me to help her with a difficult math project. The project was due in a week, and it was going to take up a lot of my time. I had my own study plans and a big English test was around the corner, but I couldn’t bring myself to say no. So, I started spending hours every day helping Lily. We worked on the math problems, did research, and prepared the presentation together.
As the days passed, I was getting more and more stressed. I was constantly tired from staying up late to study for my English test after helping Lily. On the day of the English test, I was so sleepy and unfocused that I made a lot of silly mistakes. When the results came out, I got a much lower grade than I had expected. I was devastated (崩溃的).
Lily, on the other hand, got a great grade on the math project and was very happy. She thanked me, but I didn’t feel the slightest bit of joy. Instead, I felt a sense of resentment (怨恨) building up inside me. I realized that I had put my own needs aside for so long to please others, and it had finally had a negative effect on me.
That evening, I sat in my room, thinking about what had happened. I was tired of always being the one to give in and sacrifice for others. I decided that things had to change.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。
The next day at school, another classmate, Tom, came to me with a request. After firmly saying no to Tom, I felt a strange mix of nervousness and relief.

第一节
参考范文:
Last Friday, the English Club organized an event themed “Introducing Traditional Chinese Culture in English”, whose aim was to boost students’ oral English and enhance their understanding of Chinese culture.
Students delivered wonderful presentations on topics like Chinese festivals, folk arts and traditional handicrafts. They shared vivid stories and fascinating facts, bringing the charm of Chinese culture to life. Many students said they not only bettered language skills, but also felt a stronger sense of pride in their cultural heritage. It was a great success, and we are looking forward to more such activities in the future.
第二节
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
The next day at school, another classmate, Tom, came to me with a request. He wanted me to join his group for a history project, which would require a significant amount of my free time. Just a few days ago, I would have immediately said yes without hesitation. But this time, looking at Tom’s expectant face, I summoned up my courage and said, “Tom, I really appreciate you asking me, but I have my own study schedule and personal things to take care of. I’m afraid I can’t join your group.” Tom looked a bit surprised. He tried to persuade me, saying that my ideas would be really helpful for the project. However, I stood my ground and politely declined again.
Paragraph 2:
After firmly saying no to Tom, I felt a strange mix of nervousness and relief. I was nervous because I was worried that Tom might be angry with me or that other classmates would think I was selfish. But at the same time, there was a huge sense of relief. I realized that it was okay to prioritize my own needs. To my surprise, a few days later, Tom came to me again. He said that although he was a bit disappointed at first, he understood my decision. He even thanked me for being honest with him. From then on, I continued to be true to myself. I still helped others when I could, but I no longer over-committed.

Text 10
M: Listen, Chuck. You should study hard and try your best in all your subjects. That’s all you can do. Let me tell you a little story about my study when I was at your age.
I was always good at English, but terrible at maths and science. I used to find those subjects boring. My teachers told my mom and dad — your grandparents that it was likely that I would fail in maths and science if I didn’t try my best. My parents were really angry. They stopped me from seeing my friends and made me feel like I had let them down. I decided to put extra effort into studying maths and science. I reduced time spent on English because I was already good at that. My parents were really happy with my new attitude. Then came the day of the next exam. I got high marks in science and maths. My parents were very satisfied with that. But I only scored a “C” in English when I had always been expected to get an “A”!
What did I learn from the lesson Always try your best at everything even areas you think you are good at!
