British Athletics encouraged her to try it because 2008 would be the first time women's steeplechase was in the Olympics. She had never jumped over barriers before her thirties. In 2010, she competed in both the 1,500 m and steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games, which became a turning point. After a few injuries and falling out of love with the steeplechase a little bit, she talked with her coach John Nuttall about her options. They decided to attempt different challenges to focus on longer distances—— the 5,000 m and 10,000 m.In 2011, although they hadn't planned to compete indoors that season, she was in excellent shape. She won the match in Glasgow, breaking Liz McColgan's record. Then she set her personal best in the 3,000 m at Birmingham.Going into the European Athletics Indoor Championships, she was the fastest runner on paper, but she had come fourth twice before in these championships. Her coach and she discussed race strategy carefully. For the first time, she followed her coach's advice exactly, staying near the front but not leading until the end. She had never trusted her finishing sprint(冲刺) before, but that day she did. Even though Russian runner Olesya Syreva was close behind, she won her first gold medal. At 37, she became the oldest person to win a European indoor title. Many people had kept asking when she would retire, but this victory proved that older athletes could still succeed. She changed her training as she got older, being more careful with hard training sessions and taking more time to recover. As she says, as long as you take care of your body, you can still run fast. This win was special because it came after many years of trying and showed that age shouldn't limit anyone's dreams in sports.24. What motivated British Athletics to suggest the steeplechase to Helen A. Her running speed.B. Her jumping ability.C. The popularity of the steeplechase.D. The chance to participate in the Olympics.25. What does Helen's conversation with her coach suggest A. She wanted to retire.B. She lacked confidence.C. She needed new challenges.D. She feared competition.26. What made Helen successful in the final race according to paragraph 4 A. She trained harder than others.B. She changed her style.C. She studied her teammates.D. She followed her coach's race arrangements.27. What message does the text mainly convey A. Training methods vary with age.B. Challenge is unavoidable in life.C. Age is no barrier to success.D. Success belongs to those with curiosity.CEngineers usually build devices using solids like metal or plastic. However, a team in China has created a new type of device using drops of water. These devices help study and manage the movement of tiny amounts of liquid, and the best part is that they are easy to build, adjust, and refashion. The idea for this project came from blocks. Xin Du, a researcher at Southeast University in Nanjing, China, was inspired when a student brought in a set of blocks. Du realized that just like blocks that can be amalgamated together and can be rearranged, water droplets(水滴) could do something similar. This could be a great way to build systems that control the flow of liquids in tiny tubes, a field known as microfluidics, which studies how liquids move in small spaces, such as in batteries or to model blood flow in the body.In their research, Du's team designed a system where water droplets could stick together to form a fluid path. They created a grid with tiny plastic pillars(柱子) that held the droplets in place. When the droplets touched, they joined together but did not spill(溢出) out. This allowed the scientists to control the direction of the fluid path. If they needed to change the direction, they could easily move the droplets around, much like changing the setup of blocks. The system was reconfigurable, meaning it could be quickly adjusted without starting over. This flexibility is important in microfluidics, where experiments often need to be changed as new discoveries are made.Du's team is also working to improve the system by making even smaller channels. Their final goal is to use this technology to improve organoid research, where artificial organs made from living cells are studied. This new system could provide better ways to supply nutrients or blood to these growing cells, making the study of living tissues more accurate and efficient.28. How does the device created by the team in China differ from others A. It is made from plastic. B. It employs water drops.C. It is designed by a student. D. It features metal structures.29. What does the underlined word “amalgamated” in paragraph 2 probably mean A. Enlarged. B. Glued. C. Distinguished. D. Shown.30. What does Du's team expect of the system A. It will have wide application in medical treatment.B. It will bring a heavy profit to the team.C. It will enable students to be fond of blocks.D, It will decrease the cost of artificial organs.31. Which is the most suitable title for the text A. Exposure to Various Games Sharpens the BrainB. There Is a Growing Trend Toward Playing BlocksC. Blocks Inspired a New Way to Study LiquidsD. Engineers Unlocked the Secret of Water DropletsDAt some level, advice on how to inspire employees is silly. It's usually either obvious—— be good at your job, be passionate about the work and make the people on your teams feel valued— or shockingly inauthentic(不真实的). But much more practical insights can be found in a coming book called “Inspire”, by Adam Galinsky, an academic at Columbia Business School.Lots of firms use a series of boringly abstract words to convey their goal: “change” ,“innovate”, “connect” and so on. Mr Galinsky cites an experiment that showed the effect of more concrete language. In it, teams were asked to design toys and given a vision statement to guide their behaviour. Teams who were handed a statement with more visual language— to create toys that“... make wide-eyed kids laugh and proud parents smile”— produced more engaging toys than teams who were given something more general.Another study is mentioned in Mr Galinsky's book. Participants were asked to reflect on important events in their lives, such as their choice of college. Some were also asked to think about how things would have turned out if this event had not happened. This group attributed greater meaning to the event in question, whether because they concluded fate had played a part in it or because it forced them to think through its results more clearly. This type of counterfactual thinking(反事实思维) can also be used to strengthen employees’ ties to firms: Prompting people to imagine a world in which their company does not exist seems to increase a sense of belonging.Perhaps the most striking idea in Mr Galinsky's book is that, instead of bosses motivating people from above, individuals can do it for themselves. In this study some Swiss citizens who had newly registered with a government employment agency were asked to do a10 - to 15-minute exercise in which they reflected on values that mattered to them. They were three times more likely to find a job than those who did not do the exercise.32. Why is a statement with more visual language mentioned A. To promote a lively air in firms.B. To prove Mr Galinsky's view.C. To state richness of a language.D. To persuade readers to value expression.33. What role does the counterfactual thinking play in a firm A. It causes employees to promote a sense of belonging.B. It makes employees reflect on their strengths.C. It inspires employees to study hard.D. It helps employees to be creative.34. What is the last paragraph mainly about A. An interesting example about designing toys.B. Individuals' self-motivation for job-seeking.C. Practical use of Swiss government measures.D. An employment plan from Columbia Business School.35. What is the text probably A. An introduction. B. A research article.C. A news report. D. A journal.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The Benefits of a Sense of HumourStudies have shown that a sense of humour benefits us in many ways, such as improving our mental and physical health and increasing our attractiveness.Being funny is possibly one of the best things we can do for our health. We can almost think of a sense of humour as our mind's immune(免疫的) system. 36 And afterwards, it is very likely for us to fall into depression over and over again. However, if we can define a negative event in a humorous way, it will greatly help us get rid of those depressive feelings. 37 After we hear an interesting joke and then laugh happily, the laughter can help improve our cardiovascular(心脑血管的) health and lower our heart rates and blood pressure.38 It encourages creativity and problem-solving skills by allowing us to think outside the box and approach situations with a playful mindset. When faced with obstacles, a humorous individual is more likely to see the funny side of things, thus fostering resilience(恢复力) and adaptability. 39Moreover, humour fosters stronger interpersonal relationships. 40 A shared joke or a playful remark can create an instant sense of connection, bringing individuals closer together. Humour also encourages empathy and understanding, as it helps us see the world from different perspectives, thereby promoting tolerance and acceptance.A. Humour acts as a natural stress reliever.B. Humour can improve our physical immune system as well.C. It breaks down barriers, making it easier for people to connect.D. People who have a good sense of humour show different features.E. The baggage master was busy with his checks. The passengers were rushing for the cars(火车车厢), anxious to get seats before pulling away.A man, carelessly dressed, was standing on the station platform, seemingly giving little attention to what's going on. At a quick glance, one might have easily supposed that he's a hobo(流浪汉) of neither wealth nor influence.I, as a conductor, gave him a contemptuous(轻蔑的) look, and called out, “Hello, hobo! Better get aboard, or the train will leave you behind.” The man made no reply. As the train started to move, the man climbed on the last car and took a seat. The train had gone a few miles when I appeared at the door of the car where passengers were sitting. Passing along taking tickets, I soon discovered him.“Your ticket, quick,” I said.“I don't pay,” replied the man quietly.“Don't pay ” I said.“No, sir,” replied the man again.“We’ll see about that. I shall put you off at the next station,” I said rudely and seized his suitcase.“Better not be so rough, young man,” returned one stranger.I released the bag momentarily and, seeing that he could do no more, passed on to check other passengers’ tickets. As I stopped at a seat a few paces off, another stranger who had heard the conversation asked me whether I knew that man to whom I was speaking and told me he was Peter Warburton, the president of the road.I asked him whether it was real, trying to cover up my worry. And he said yes.My face became red, but with a strong effort, I controlled myself and continued checking tickets as usual.Meanwhile, Mr Warburton sat quietly.
