Student Leadership Programme
The Student Leadership Programme aims to get more college students to participate in basketball, hockey, baseball and other physical activities.
Our objective
Balance targeted and broad approaches to find & develop a reliable student workforce to:

Expectations of colleges
Colleges will be required to select student ambassadors and support them in developing and delivering projects and activities at their college. The ambassador programmes offer some suggestions and examples, but no specific direction or any targets/requirements to deliver against.
The various parts of the Student Leadership Programme will have different expectations for the college accessing them. For example, any funding opportunities will require watching and checking.
All colleges who access the overall benefits of the Student Leadership Programme will need to ensure any students who engage in any part of the programme complete a personal survey to show the impact sports have had on them.

Information about the different opportunities within the Student Leadership Programme will be sent directly to registered colleges, and a general overview of each programme can be found on the links below.

My son used to play every team sport he could. Sometime around sixth grade, he noticed he wasn’t so good at playing most team sports as his teammates did, and he went from a boy who loved being with his friends and playing baseball or basketball for the love of it, to a very self-conscious child who felt like he wasn’t as good as he thought. It wasn’t long before he stopped joining any teams.
Of course, I encouraged him to be active, and tried to make him see the importance of still doing things he loved. I had always thought my kid would be involved in organized team sports through high school. And I’m glad I didn’t push him.
It wasn’t long before he started showing an interest in biking, so I helped him sign up for a bike-building course, which was more exciting for him than hitting a home run. He goes to work with his father during school vacations and during the weekends and is learning the plumbing (管道系统)trade. He isn’t winning awards. He doesn’t get credit or recognition and colleges won’t look at biking and plumbing the way they would if he were a talented basketball player, but I don’t care and neither does he. When our kids are in their element, that’s all that matters.
My son is much happier when he bikes with his father than he would be if I forced him to be on the basketball court and that’s what our kids will keep; that’s how they will figure out who they are. It’s okay if what excites them doesn’t match common expectations or can’t be measured by the score. And as parents, it’s okay if our kids aren’t going along with the crowd; we need to give them the time and space to figure out their passion on their own.

Jersey City, New Jersey, is partnering with two Illinois companies to change used school buses into mobile units where people experiencing homelessness can access health services.
The city bought the two buses from Joliet, Illinois, and is working with Infinity Trailers and Diamond Specialty Vehicles to turn them into spaces where people without housing can shower, wash clothes and receive health services. The project has been made possible by a $50,000 donation from Reckitt Benckiser, a company that specializes in health products.
Named “Health Buses”, the vehicles will travel along a scheduled route and each will have two full shower and bathroom units, two washing machines, a medical room and free Wi-Fi. The buses will be free to use for all people, but they are specifically targeting women who are homeless to provide them with the safe spaces they need.
The project is part of a larger effort by Jersey City to make health services more accessible to at-risk populations. “Our homeless are at special risk and special concern.” said Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop. “By mobilizing our efforts directly to targeted areas and populations, we’re making our city services more accessible and therefore more used by those who need them most.”
The buses will also work with housing companies to help those in need move toward housing readiness. Diamond Specialty Vehicles is dealing with the main part of the improvement work and is taking care of stripping (拆卸) the buses down and then turning them into a final product that’ll serve the community at large.
“I think that so much of what we did before was usually a business-to-business type of project.” said Eric Stutzman, Diamond Specialty Vehicles’ CEO. “The project of Health Buses was absolutely our first try. We put great efforts and humanity to it. We’re serving disadvantaged groups, and I think that we have a responsibility to do that.”

In general any exercise improves our health. But a wealth of recent science and personal experience indicate that different people can respond to similar exercise in different ways. Even if everyone completes the same amount of exercise, some people become more fit than others, or lose more weight, or gain greater control of their blood sugar.
Researchers from Washington University conducted a study involving people sitting for long and moderate cycling, which suggests that whether and when we eat may affect how exercise affects us. Participants in the research received abundant tests. According to the tests of the interaction of meal timing, physical health and exercise, it can be concluded that working out on an empty stomach could increase the health benefits of the activity.
Most exercise scientists believe that our genes, diets, figures, characters and other subtle aspects of our lives act together to shape how our bodies react to exercise. But some researchers suspect that meal timing matters as well. Working muscles need fuel during exercise, mostly in the form of sugar or fat. That fuel can come from our most recent meal, once its component sugars and fats reach our bloodstreams, or from our bodies’ stores of fats and sugars.
We all have such stores, especially of fat, some of it staying in our muscles and they are well and evenly matched. This muscle fat becomes problematic if we accumulate too much of it. Fatty muscles do not respond well to the hormone insulin (胰岛素), which directs sugar from the blood into the muscles. As a result, excess fat can contribute to insulin resistance, high blood sugar levels, increased risks for Type 2 diabetes and other metabolic (新陈代谢的) conditions.

I handed her passport with a smile. As I drove back, the scenery outside the car window was wonderful.
