A
Zheng Qinwen, the brightest of China’s growing tennis lights, first picked up a racket (球拍) at the age of seven. Almost immediately, she was among the best children her age in her hometown. She loved the sport, and after two months she and her father traveled to Wuhan to show off her game to a more experienced coach. Since she had done well, she would stay to train.
However, the memories of those days remain painful. Whenever her parents came to visit, she would beg them not to go. “I cried a lot,” Zheng said during a recent interview. The hardship is paying off on the court, though.
After three years in Wuhan, she caught the attention of an agency (经纪公司) and earned the opportunity to train among the sport’s top rising stars. Her mother decided to move with her and has mostly been with her ever since.
Zheng turned professional at 15, and began a mostly continuous rise until the French Open last year. She appeared on the edge of a breakthrough, winning the opening set of her match against a top player before suffering from a physical challenge. Then, twice in the U. S. Open, she lost the chance to win. She knew why. Her mind began to shift to the final result instead of focusing on the game she was about to play. Sometimes it takes losing a match to bring her back to the present.
After the Wimbledon Championships this year, where she lost in the first round, she took a break to see her family. She had not seen them in a year and a half. Her life has had a lot of that.
For her next game, she is on her own. She is expecting the chance to make decisions for herself. For so long, people have been making big decisions for her. Now she is ready to try that for herself.
1. What best describes Zheng’s experience in Wuhan
A. Boring and stressful. B. Joyful and memorable.
C Tough but rewarding. D. Disappointing but life-changing.
2. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. Zheng’s expectation and stress. B. Zheng’s failure and mental growth.
C. Zheng’s efforts and achievements. D. Zheng’s breakthrough and health problem.
3. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Taking short breaks. B. Losing tennis matches.
C. Being away from her family. D. Making decisions for herself.
B
A recent survey found a quarter of people aged 18 to 34 never answer the phone and nearly 70% prefer a text to a phone call.
For older generations, talking on the phone is normal. However, phone calls on the mobile would have cost a fortune in the past. And so, a generation of texters were born around 2000: mobile phone calls were for emergencies.
Without the habit of speaking on the phone, young people now feel awkward when taking phone calls and some even fear the worst when their phone starts ringing. More than half of the people in the survey admit that they think an unexpected call means bad news. As our lives and working schedules get busier, people have less time to call friends simply to catch up. Phone calls, then, are kept only for import ant news in their lives.
This tendency is also seen in the workplace. Henry Nelson, a 31-year-old content creator, says it’s the tension connected with real-time conversations, possible awkwardness, and the pressure to respond immediately that makes him hate talking on the phone. Dunja Relic, a 27-year-old lawyer, says answering a call requires you to stop what you’re doing, and this sets you back on your tasks.
However Ciara Brodie, a 25-year-old supermarket area manager, is against the flow. “I love it when my seniors at work call me. It’s more thoughtful than a text because it requires a certain amount of effort, so I really know that my boss appreciates my opinion,” she says.
Some people may say this new communication tendency is further proof (证据) of young people being overly sensitive, but it’s actually far from that. Twenty-five years ago, people were opposed to shifting from fax (传真机) to email, but the change has made communication far more efficient. Perhaps now it’s time to accept the power of text and just as we gave up using the fax machine in the 1990s, we can leave the undesirable phone calls behind now.
4. What do young people think of a phone call according to the survey
A. It costs too much money. B. It changes their schedules.
C. It suggests something serious. D. It makes people’s lives busier.
5. What is the main purpose of paragraph 4 concerning phone calls
A. To compare opinions on them. B. To explain why they are disliked at work.
C. To discourage the use of them. D. To show how they influence people’s work.
6. Why does Brodie prefer taking phone calls
A. They make her feel valued. B. They lead her to be thoughtful.
C. They encourage her creativity. D. They inspire extra efforts from her.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards text
A. Unclear. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful D. Favorable.
C
Tiny plastic pieces have spread all over the planet — on land, in the air, and even in clouds. Around 17 0 trillion bits of microplastics are reported to be in the oceans alone. Around the world, research has found people and wildlife take in microplastics mainly through eating and drinking, but also through breathing. Our new research has found that bottlenose dolphins (海豚) in Florida are breathing out microplastics.
Breath samples (样本) for our study were collected from wild bottlenose dolphins during catch-and -free health checks. During these brief checks, we held a customized spirometer-a device that measures lung (肺) function-above the dolphin’s blowhole to collect samples of the animals’ breath. Using a microscope in a lab, we checked for tiny pieces that looked like plastic.
Our study found the microplastics breathed out by bottlenose dolphins are like those found in huma n lungs. Whether dolphins are taking in more of these pollutants than people is not yet known. In huma ns, microplastics can cause a wide range of lung diseases. Since dolphins and humans breathe in almost the same plastics, dolphins may be at risk for the same lung problems.
As top hunters with a life of around 60 years, bottlenose dolphins help scientists understand the in fluences of pollutants on sea ecosystems (生态系统) and the related health risks for people living near coasts. This research is important because more than 41% of the world’s human population lives within 62 miles of a coast.
Our study stresses how widespread plastic pollution is and how other living things, including dolphins, are suffering. While the influences of plastics on dolphins’ lungs are not yet known, people can help deal with the microplastic pollution problem by reducing plastic use and working to stop more plastics from polluting the oceans.
8. What can we know about microplastics from paragraph 1
A. They can be found everywhere. B. They mainly influence wildlife.
C. They reach people mainly through air. D. They are partly produced by dolphins.
9. How was the study carried out
A. By watching dolphins’ behaviors. B. By keeping track of wild dolphins.
C. By checking dolphins’ lung function. D. By examining samples from dolphins.
10. Which is one of the study findings
A. Dolphins take in more plastics than humans do.
B. Dolphins are living shorter due to microplastics.
C. Dolphins and humans are catching lung diseases.
D. Dolphins and humans suffer from similar plastics.
