The best audiobooks of 2024 are excellent not just for their writing, but for the vocal performances that make these narratives particularly absorbing in your ear.
James
In this retelling of Mark Twain’ s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” from the perspective of the enslaved man named James, on several occasions, a white character is astonished upon noticing James’ s proper English accent. Hoffman, with remarkable flexibility in his voice, skillfully switches between James's natural way of speaking and the way he fakes it, keeping his intelligence hidden from white people.
Brooklyn
Ronan, who starred in the 2015 movie adaptation of Tóibin's 2009 novel, plays her role again as the smart and brave Irish immigrant Ellis Lacey, who in 1951 travels across the Atlantic to settle down in Brooklyn. In her gentle and calm delivery, Ronan presents Ellis's dramas as matters of deep feelings, humor and dignity.
Whale Fall
On an island off Wales in the early years of World War II, 18-year-old Manod faces the unappealing prospect until she is hired by a pair of English researchers, Edward and Joan. Keyworth’s voice throughout this audiobook is both soft and melancholy(伤悲 ), slipping easily between English and Welsh as she conveys the dramas of the Manod's love life.
The Wide Wide Sea
This account of an 18th-century sea journey in search of the Northwest Passage puts Captain James Cook's contributions in a 21st-century context. Noble reads the full range of Cook’s encounters with different people and in various environments during the two and a half years he was sailing.

When Ahouansou was a kid growing up in the West African country of Benin, he loved eating a traditional dish called pirou. Now a chef, Ahouansou serves the dish at his restaurant in Cotonou, Benin's largest city. He is part of a movement of chefs and restaurateurs in Benin who are celebrating and elevating the country's traditional cuisine. There's also an emphasis on cooking with ingredients from local farmers and sellers.
Chefs like Ahouansou can make a real impact on local food systems, according to Paul Newnham, founder of the Chefs’ Manifesto, a chef-led project. “Chefs are uniquely placed in our food system to lead and inspire change— change in their kitchens, in their communities where they work and in their countries,” he says. Valerie Vinakpon, another Beninese chef and cookbook author, hopes their slight adjustments will get Beninese excited about their own food. At her new restaurant in Cotonou, she focuses on the novel presentation of Beninese dishes using local ingredients. “We encourage people to accept Beninese cuisine because people have abandoned our traditional plates in favor of modern Western dishes,” she says.
The tweaks also serve a deeper purpose, says Vinakpon. When chefs, food sellers, restaurateurs and home cooks buy native ingredients, they are supporting the people in the region who harvest, process and distribute these foods. “Beninese cuisine is linked to the local economy. The more locally produced foods we consume, the better the economy will be,” she says. For this reason, sweet potatoes and cassava(木薯), two of Benin's biggest trade articles, are star players on Vinakpon's restaurant menu.
Pierre Thiam, a Senegalese chef and cookbook author, has seen firsthand what can happen when restaurateurs put traditional ingredients on their menus. His company, Yolele Foods, now sells bags of locally-produced grain to Western retailers like Whole Foods and Amazon. And his business is growing. Ahouansou sees potential for similar success in Benin. “It would be great,” he says, “if Beninese prepared foods that are currently imported from other countries could be produced ourselves. Many items which we could produce ourselves are not yet made in Benin.”
24. What did Ahouansou like when he was a child
A. Making Beninese cuisine.
B. Visiting new restaurants in Cotonou.
C. Eating a traditional dish called pirou.
D. Celebrating traditional dishes in his family.
25. According to Paul Newnham, what role can chefs play
A. They have no influence on local communities.
B. They can only change the food in their kitchens.
C. They are only responsible for cooking good food.
D. They can lead and inspire changes in various aspects.
26. What do we know about Beninese cuisine from the passage
A. It is not popular among Beninese people anymore.
B. It is completely replaced by modern Western dishes.
C. It is difficult to find local ingredients for Beninese cuisine.
D. It is helpful to boost the local economy by using local ingredients.
27. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The success of Pierre Thiam's business.
B. The potential for Benin to produce its own foods.
C. The influence of Western retailers on local cuisine.
D. The comparison between Benin and Senegal in cuisine.

It's weird. Time feels faster the older we get. I can think back to an event three years ago, and it feels like yesterday. I still wear the same clothes. My haircut is the same. I live in the same place and eat the same food. Nothing much distinguishes that event from my present. Yet, for a child or teenager, three years can feel like a lifetime. Why does this happen
Children and teenagers experience significantly more change, more frequently, than adults. They grow taller, wear new clothes, switch schools, have different friends, and learn new things in class. It is a world of transition and change. As adults, many of these factors level out and don't change at all.
During adolescence, which researchers identify as between 10 and 25 years of age, the brain undergoes significant change. Laurence Steinberg, a heavy hitter in the adolescent research world, calls it a brain of “opportunity” because it is wide open to learning. Imagine thousands of neurons(神经元) all bumping up against each other, equally likely to activate each other. Adolescents are highly sensitive to their environment because their brains are open to anything and everything happening to them. They use this openness to learn how the world works and how to function in it.
When sex hormones come online, they enhance this learning through myelination(髓鞘形成), or the act of adding a fatty sheath(鞘) on top of the highly active neurons to help them fire 100 times faster than non-myelinated neurons. The brain takes what it learns and hardwires it. Stressful life events have a greater impact when they occur in adolescence versus middle childhood because the brain wires to teenage experiences.
This is why we have a different experience of time. When we are teenagers, we are so open and receptive to the world. Our interactions with teachers, friends, material in class, parents, society, and more shape how we understand the world and how we operate in it. We experience big emotions, teaching us about relationships, responsibility, and everything else. It feels like so much happens every day because our brains are taking in so many things. As we get older, our brains aren't wired to take in as many things from the outside world, or to learn in the same way. Therefore, three years ago can feel like yesterday: not much has changed in our brains, our perception, or our lived experience.
28. What message does the author intend to convey in the first paragraph
A. His preference to a certain food. B. His fixed living style.
C. His feeling about time passing. D. His change in appearance.
29. What does the underlined phrase “a heavy hitter” in paragraph 3 mean
A. A widely accepted theory. B. A highly influential researcher.
C. A physically strong person. D. A useful tool in scientific research.
30. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The importance of myelination in the brain.
B. The comparison between teenagers and adults.
C. The impact of sex hormones on teenagers’ learning.
D. The reasons why teenagers experience time differently.
31. What can we infer about teenagers from the passage
A. They have less stress than adults.
B. They are more likely to adapt to change.
C. Their brains are less active than those of adults.
D. They focus more on the present than the future.

Lighthouse factories are known as “the most advanced factories in the world”. They are factories that have successfully transitioned from the pilot stage to large-scale integration of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technology, achieving significant financial and operational benefits.
Recently, the World Economic Forum announced that 22 innovative manufacturers joined the Global Lighthouse Network, including 19 4IR Lighthouses and 3 Sustainability Lighthouses across 10 countries. Of the total, 13 factories are located in China, accounting for nearly 60 percent, a record high.
Among the new lighthouse factories this year, Mengniu Dairy(Ningxia) Co, SANY Renewable Energy (Shaoshan), Sanmen Nuclear Power Co, Zhengzhou Coal Mining Machinery(Group) Co. and Taiyuan Heavy Industry Railway Transit Equipment Co. are the world’ s first lighthouse factories in their respective sectors— dairy, wind energy equipment, nuclear power, coal mining machinery and rail transit equipment.
The increase in the number of lighthouse factories in China is inseparable from the size of China's manufacturing industry. China has kept its position as the world's top manufacturing center for 14 years, and the proportion(份额) of China's manufacturing output worldwide rose from 22.5 percent in 2012 to nearly 30 percent in 2021.
Such a base, together with supporting policies of the country, shows there will be an accelerated push for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to adopt digital tools and take full advantage of distinctive industrial groups of SMEs.
Digital technologies such as AI and machine learning are key features of this batch of “lighthouse factories” in China. Information from the listed Hefei Meiling Washing Machine Co. shows that it has continued to explore and reconstruct new end-to-end green and sustainable capabilities, and has extensively applied digital technologies in the product design, manufacturing and broad transport sectors.
Since the first selection in 2018, a total of 172 “lighthouse factories” have been designated around the world, with 74 located in China. China's remarkable achievements in the development of “lighthouse factories” reflect the country’s strong strength and competitiveness in the field of manufacturing.
32. What can we know about China's manufacturing industry from paragraph 2
A. It is highly competitive in the 4IR.
B. It has been declining in recent years.
C. It lacks support from the government.
D. It focuses on traditional manufacturing.
33. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The global distribution of manufacturing centers.
B. The technologies of China's manufacturing industry.
C. The contribution of lighthouse factories to China's economy.
D. The reasons for the growth of lighthouse factories in China.
34. What does the example of Hefei Meiling Washing Machine Co. suggest
A. The difficulty in reconstructing factory capabilities.
B. The importance of sustainable development in factories.
C. The application of digital technologies in manufacturing.
D. The competition among different washing machine companies.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage
A. The Rise of Lighthouse Factories in China
B. Digital Transformation in Global Manufacturing
C. The World Economic Forum and Manufacturing
D. China's Manufacturing Industry: Past and Present
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Mathematics is treated with both awe and fear. 36 . Mathematician Eugenia Cheng has spent much of her career working to ease those anxieties. She has written several books to cultivate mathematical curiosity and illustrate how mathematical thinking can enrich our lives.
37 . However, math classes often teach them that math facts should be accepted without question. For instance, a student might learn that a prime number(质数) is defined as a whole number that is only divided by itself and 1. The number 1, however, is not considered a prime number. If they ask why, they will likely be told it just isn't. 38 As Cheng describes, prime numbers are the multiplicative(乘法的) building blocks of the whole numbers; every whole number greater than 1 can be broken down as a product of prime numbers. Because multiplying by 1 doesn't do anything to a number, 1 isn't needed to build the other whole numbers. Excluding 1 from the primes allows us to break every whole number greater than 1 down into a product of primes in only one way.
If 1 were a prime number, those products would no longer be unique. Mathematicians have found the uniqueness of these products useful for exploring properties(性质) of numbers. 39
The prime number example is just one of many simple questions that Cheng poses in one of her books to motivate deep dives into the logical foundations of mathematics. 40 Cheng’s answers touch not only on our understanding of mathematics itself, but also on her personal experiences with math education as both student and teacher.
A. Students are naturally curious about numbers and patterns. B. This shows the importance of questioning in math learning. C. Why do many people have such mixed feelings towards math D. This book provides many interesting examples of common questions. E. But in fact, there is a good reason to exclude 1 from the prime numbers. F. So they reached an agreement not to include 1 in the primes about a century ago. G. People often see math as an objective and useful tool, but also feel anxious when using it.

When 20-year-old Boyan Slat accepted the UN's Champions of the Earth award for his efforts to clear ocean plastic, he made two predictions: The road ahead would be 41 and he would not give up. As years passed, both those forecasts have come true. Slat is as committed as ever to clearing plastic in the oceans using a U-shape floater(漂浮物) that acts like an artificial coastline. But he has certainly met with the difficulties he 42 . Despite this, Slat has no intention of giving up.
When Slat was a high school student, he went on a diving trip to Greece. 43 by how much plastic he found in the water, he decided to work on a solution. Since then, his initial concepts have 44 . He founded the Ocean Cleanup project and raised millions of dollars to fund his revolutionary work. Slat and his team took their first cleanup device, System 001—a 600-metre floater that sits on the surface with a tapered(锥形的) three-metre-deep screen that hangs down and prevents 45 from floating away— to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in September 2018. But the device failed to keep the plastic because it was not moving at a consistent speed. Then, in January 2019, it had to be taken back for 46 .
System 001/B is now being put through its paces at the enormous marine dump(垃圾堆) between Hawaii and the West Coast of the US. Slat says the team has 47 the speed issue but there is still a problem with plastic slipping into the space between the screen and the floater.
Some marine scientists have taken aim at Slat's project, saying it is 48 attention from efforts to control plastic use and will never work. Slat 49 that although efforts to encourage people not to use so much plastic are critical, we must also deal with the plastic already 50 fish, birds and other marine creatures. “Rather than people 51 trying to give up flying, it will be zero emission aircraft technology. Rather than nobody using cars, it's going to be electric cars,” he says.
The project has 52 both support and criticism. Many people admire Slat’s 53 and determination to tackle the huge problem of ocean plastic. However, others cast 54 on the feasibility and effectiveness of his methods. Despite the mixed reactions, Slat remains 55 and continues to work towards his goal of cleaning the oceans.

School, school, school. Every day was the same. Harriet felt like she was on a never-ending treadmill(跑步机), going through the motions without any real purpose. She was losing steam, and eventually found herself feeling numb.
There was a writing competition she wanted to enter— kind of. She loved writing, but lately, she just couldn't be bothered. It was as if all her energy had been drained away(耗尽). She stared at the blank page in her notebook, willing the words to come, but they remained hard to find.
Then Zoe moved into their class. Everything about her gave off light and energy, from the way she bounced into the classroom to how she swung her backpack over her chair with carefree grace. Harriet was fascinated and desperate to know more about her. Zoe seemed to possess an endless supply of energy, something Harriet sorely lacked.
Her chance came during sports class when they were placed on the same running team. Harriet’s heart pounded, not from the exercise, but from the anticipation of finally speaking to Zoe.
“Where do you get all your energy from ” Harriet suddenly said out loud during a break.
Zoe smiled mysteriously. “Lie down,” she said.
Confused but curious, Harriet followed Zoe’s lead and lay down on the grass. Next thing she knew, they were both looking up at the white fluffy clouds floating lazily above them.
“Isn't this incredible ” Zoe said, her voice filled with wonder.
Harriet looked up, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she really saw the sky. The world suddenly seemed so much bigger and more expansive. The clouds were like giant cotton balls, floating in an endless sea of blue. How could just changing your perspective change so much
“We spend too much time looking down, at our phones, at our feet, but not enough time looking up,”said Zoe.

The next day, Harriet woke up and knew exactly what she wanted to do. Having decided to participate in the competition, Harriet walked to school with a completely different mindset. Keeping Zoe's words in mind, she felt more energetic than ever. She started noticing some amazing details behind her daily life, such as the interesting conversations during breaks and the breathtaking sunlight pouring down on the ground. She couldn’t help but think how wonderful a school day could be. That night, with inspiration flowing like a spring, Harriet smoothly finished her article and submitted it the next day.
Then came the day for the writing competition results. Harríet's heart was in her throat as the teacher began to announce the results in class. “Congratulations! (Text 1)
M: Have you finished packing
W: No. My suitcase broke, so I need something new to put in my things. I’ll get one of those big sports bags as quality backpacks are expensive.
(Text 2)
M: I canceled my trip to New York.
W: Was it due to weather conditions
M: No, there was a family emergency. You know, sometimes things happen in an unexpected way.
(Text 3)
M: Have you sent the plant materials you collected yesterday to the laboratory
W: Not yet.
M: When do you plan to send them
W: I'll get it done in the next half hour.
(Text 4)
W: Does your house seem empty now after your sister left for college
M: Not really. My grandmother has moved into her room. It's really nice having her there because she cooks supper for me if my mom and dad go out for the evening.
(Text 5)
W: Excuse me. I left my book on the bed when I checked out just now. Have you seen it
M: Oh, yes. The housekeeper saw it and gave it to the manager who put it with the other lost property. He keeps it all in the wooden chest behind his desk.
(Text 6)
W: So if you're after a low— risk investment, I'd say go for this savings account. It's an extremely reliable product.
M: What do you mean by reliable
W: Well, you earn a fixed 3% a year,
M: Can I close the account whenever I want
W: Yes, you can.
M: And can I check the account online
W: Of course. And it's a very user— friendly site. If you have a moment, I can demonstrate to you how easy it is.
(Text 7)
W: Three people, sir
M: Yes.
W: But you only have two boarding passes here. Where's the third one
M: Oh, no! I used the online check— in service at home. I didn't see there were only two.
W: And that blue suitcase, sir. That's hold baggage. It's too big to take on the plane. You need to check it in.
M: I'll have to go back. Can my children go through security now
W: No. I'm sorry. They can't. Just go back and explain the situation. Go to the priority check— in. It will be quicker.
M: OK, thanks.
(Text 8)
W: What do you do, Simon
M: I work for a company that produces software. And I'm a sales representative.
W: Who do you work with
M: I work with a small team of representatives. There are three of us. And obviously I have a lot of contact with my customers.
W: So who are your customers
M: International companies that work with producers and suppliers abroad. They use our software to figure out the cost of making a product in different countries.
W: How does this help your customers
M: Well, they know the production cost in each country. Then they choose the supplier with the best price.
W: OK, I see. What sort of problems do you deal with in your work
M: The biggest problem is time— my company only hires 12 people. I primarily sell software at work, but I also need to train our customers to use it and that's a lot of work.
(Text 9)
W: Ladies and gentlemen, good evening! You are listening to At the Movies! I'm Nicole Reeves.
M: And I'm Anthony Hale. Good evening!
W: Tonight, we're going to look at the new James Bond film. Well, I really liked this new James Bond actor! He's the most suitable actor that's ever had the role.
M: I agree, a perfect 007 type.
W: Yeah, and his acting was so unbelievably natural.
M: What did you think of the story
W: It was the standard Bond movie with the usual beautiful women, the usual bad character— nothing new.
M: Well. I have to say that I thought the story was unusually good.
W: Fine. What did you think about the music I was totally impressed by it.
M: Yeah, it really added to the action scenes.
W: Yes. But unfortunately that brings up a weakness in the film for me: the special effects. Again, it's just the same old stuff.
M: So, overall, how do you rate this movie
W: Well, I have to give it only two stars…a rating of “fair”. How about you
M: Well, I give it my highest rating… four stars out of five!
W: Hmm. Well, that's all from us tonight. See you tomorrow and we'll talk about a best— selling novel.
(Text 10)
M: Hi there. I'm Tim Tanner. I am honored to be here today. I've appeared on lots of TV shows with my brother Sam Tanner as the singing twin brothers. People of-ten ask us what it's like to be twins. Well, I was born ten minutes before Sam so I'm the older brother, although we do have a real older brother, Ken, who's a year older than us. We were born premature— we suddenly appeared in October rather than January. Ken's birthday is in December, so we're pretty close in age.
Sam and I aren't completely the same, but even our dad makes mistakes some-times, because there's hardly any difference in our hair, and we're the same build. But as soon as we open our mouths, he’ll know which one it is.
In character we're mostly similar— we've both always loved music, and we've al-ways had a real interest in going out. However, people that know us say I'm not as confident as Sam is, which is probably true. We are going to promote our new album Time Dance next week, which is quite different from our first one Soul Brothers. We’ve poured our hearts into it, and we'd be incredibly grateful for your support.
