I often wake up to my alarm after a short night and step out of bed to a day I’ve fought through many times. When I get to school, I start with Spanish, my hardest class. Despite being around all year, I have no idea what’s coming on. I then walk to my English class, in which I was stuck in the language rules. The assignments take much energy that my perfectionist nature is unable to take on in school so I save them for later, most probably late at night.
This is my reality as a student with dyslexia, a learning disorder in reading and spelling; assignments that take three times as long as they’re meant to, late nights and early mornings to even slightly keep up with my classes.
I was told that Advanced Placement U.S. History would be my hardest class. But here, I am in my element. Despite being three assignments behind, I’m actively engaged. Yes, my passion for history heightens my focus, but my teacher’s willingness to work with me is what allows me to fly high.
Teachers need to offer alternative structures that make learning more accessible. I’ve had teachers who teach lecture-based classes where students are expected to take notes and listen. As a student with dyslexia, this doesn’t work. A fix for that is as simple as providing alternative resources: a slide show students can go back to after class — or perhaps even an activity that further plays with the concepts.
Now many schools are shifting to approaches that meet the needs of all kids. However, supportive work can still be done to support students with dyslexia. If school systems are willing to provide support and education by creating an accessible class structure from the start, students won’t be stuck into academic tracks that don’t push them to their full potential (潜力).
24. Why does the author have to do his homework late at night
A. He is assigned extra homework. B. He fails to manage his spare time.
C. He needs time to do it well enough. D. He dislikes tasks related to languages.
25. What does the underlined part “in my element” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Burning the midnight oil. B. Biting off more than I can chew.
C. Feeling like a fish in water. D. Having butterflies in my stomach.
26. What does the author think of lecture-based classes
A. Satisfying. B. Inspiring. C. Rewarding. D. Demanding.
27. What does the author advise schools to do for students
A. Offer classes with alternatives. B. Give students more time to take notes.
C. Organize out-of-class activities. D. Get teachers trained in special education.

This book, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, is set on an island in the Caribbean. It is mostly jungle, with a small village and a river running through it. It is a breeding ground, so naturally that there are nests of dinosaurs.
It has special notice for its wonderful storyline, making us experience the characters’ terror, share their relief, and then feel the terror again. The main character in this book is Ian Malcolm, a professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He is asked by Richard Levine to go to this island and help find out if there are dinosaurs. Ian was one of the people who were saved from Jurassic Park before it was destroyed. Some other important characters in this book are Sarah Harding. Richard Levine, and Kelly Curtis. Sarah Harding is a field researcher who studies hyenas (蠡狗) and lions. Richard Levine is a rich scientist who funds a trip to the island. Kelly Curtis is a seventh-grader who wants to be just like Sarah Harding.
The biggest problem in this book is that Richard is eager to get to the island, and goes without anybody. He then has to be saved before the dinosaurs kill him. Also, some others want to steal dinosaur eggs to make their own Jurassic Park, and must also be stopped. One important event in this book is when they arrive at the island they are immediately attacked on all sides by dinosaurs and must find a safe way to get Levine. Then, at night, they are beset (包围) by dinosaurs and some predators. Then, they miss their ride back and need to find some kind of other transport off the island. At the end of this book the characters realize why there are no adult dinosaurs, and finally escape back to civilization.
A wonderful book Whether or not that’s true I cannot say but please do not base your initial judgement of this book on appearance. If you’re a fan of Michael Crichton, dinosaurs or just rip-roaring thrilling rides, you should give this book the read it clearly deserves!
28. What is likely the tone of the book
A. Intense and thrilling B. Calm and educational
C. Romantic and emotional D. Humorous and lighthearted
29. Why does Richard Levine need to be rescued
A. He is attacked on all sides by adult dinosaurs.
B. He gets lost in the jungle on a Caribbean island.
C. He goes to the island alone and faces danger from dinosaurs.
D. He fail to find some other transport off the island on his own.
30. Who is the writer of The Lost World: Jurassic Park
A. Jan Malcolm. B. Michael Crichton.
C. Kelly Curtis. D. Richard Levine.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article
A. To recommend a book. B. To honor a writer.
C. To share an adventure. D. To introduce an island.
D
The instruments that doctors use to monitor health are often expensive, as is the training required to operate them. That combined cost is too high for the medical system to scan regularly for early signs of illness.
A research project called AlzEye, run from Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, may change this. It is attempting to use the eye as a window through which to detect signals about the health of other organs. The doctors in charge of it, Siegfried Wagner and Pearse Keane, are linking Moorfields’ database of eye scans, which offer a detailed picture of the health of the retina (视网膜), with information about other aspects of its patients’ health collected from other hospitals around England.
The dataset includes every one of the 300,000 patients who visited Moorfields between 2014 and 2024 and were over the age of 40. The idea is to examine changes to people’s eyes within that ten-year period, and link these with, say, the appearance of Alzheimer’s disease in the same patient.
Drs Wagner and Keane are searching for patterns in the eye that betray (泄露) the appearance of disease elsewhere in the body, and are focusing first on Alzheimer’s disease. They will seek such patterns with the help of algorithms (程序) that can spot far tinier variations. They may, it should be remembered, never find such patterns. Although there is evidence that the back of the eye does change as its owner develops Alzheimer’s, it may be that the changes are too small to be detected reliably enough for diagnosis. If such patterns could be recognized reliably, though, the potential impact would be huge. Even in rich countries, between 50% and 80% of Alzheimer’s cases go undiagnosed. Moreover, even if the technique does not work for Alzheimer’s, it might work for something else. Dr. Wagner and Dr. Keane therefore plan further searches for patterns related to strokes and heart disease.
If it does work, the technique the two researchers are proposing will be cheap to carry out. Also, the equipment and algorithms to perform an eye scan are available to anyone, through cloud-computing services like Google and Amazon.
32. Why does theAlzEye project attempt to change the way diseases are diagnosed
A. It can’t offer all-around health information.
B. It can’t find early signs of illness effectively.
C. Doctors are interested in new medical fields.
D. Hospitals can’t afford the equipment and training.
33. Drs Wagner and Keane use eye scans to _________.
A. decide whether the patients’ retinas are healthy
B. compare Moorfields’ database with other hospitals’
C explore the use of algorithms in detecting Alzheimer’s
D. find the connections between eye changes and appearances
34. What do we learn about the AlzEye project
A. It examines the lifelong changes to 300,000 patients’ eyes.
B. It can correctly diagnose Alzheimer’s cases by scanning eyes.
C. It may be applied to find other diseases besides Alzheimer’s.
D. It provides cloud-computing services with Google and Amazon.
35. What would be a suitable title for the text
A. The Future of Disease Diagnosis: Eye Scans for All
B. Eye Health: A Window to the Body’s Overall Condition
C. Early Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease: A New Method
D. AlzEye: Using Eye Scans to Detect Early Signs of Disease

As December approaches, the festive season arrives. From office Christmas gatherings to New Year’s Eve celebrations, socializing instills fear in many people. If all the parties over the festive period stressed you out, the first thing to say is you’re not alone. ___36___
The reason for this is the way we evolved (进化). ___37___ That’s why we have instincts (本能) to care a lot about social stuff, are so concerned about things like status and reputation, and are afraid that we might embarrass ourselves or be excluded.
But don’t forget, social occasions can also be an opportunity, not just a threat. ___38___ So as an initial step towards easing your anxiety, try boosting your hopefulness about these events. For example, remind yourself of occasions — however rare they might be — when things went well and you had a fun time or you made new friends.
___39___ Rather than waiting for the obligations (义务) to roll in and hang over you like a dark cloud, be clear about which ones you really want. If there are friends you’d love to go with, don’t wait for them to ask you—reach out and make it happen.
Indeed, excessive (过度的) self-focus is one of the main drivers of social anxiety. Constantly monitoring your own behaviour and words will fuel your nerves and lead you to act more awkwardly. ___40___ You can even give yourself another if-then plan to help with it: if I find myself being self-focused, then I’ll make a conscious effort to focus on what someone is saying or wearing. Like all challenges in life we find difficult, socializing gets easier with practice.
A. Next be a little active and strategic.
B. Don’t overestimate others’ opinions of you.
C. Your friends probably like you more than you imagine.
D. You can redirect your attention outwards to reduce anxiety.
E. In fact, feeling anxious about socializing is incredibly common.
F. Throughout history, humans need to work in groups for survival.
G. They’re chances to build shared memories, bond and have fun together.

3 Daily Habits that Often Kill 90 Percent of Our Inner Peace and Joy
1 Focusing on how life “should” be every step of the way.
Try to use frustration and ___56___ (convenience) to motivate you rather than annoy you. You are in control of the way you look at life. Instead of getting angry, find the lesson. In place of worry, take action. In place of doubt, have faith. Remember that your response is always ___57___ (powerful) than your present situation. The vast majority of your life is decided by your responses. Where you ultimately end up is heavily dependent ___58___ how you play the hands you’ve been dealt.
2. Wanting to control the uncontrollable.
Be selective with your energy today. If you can fix a problem, fix it. If you can’t, then accept it and change your thoughts about it. Whatever you do, don’t attempt ___59___ (invest) more energy than you have. Truth told, some of the most powerful moments ___60___ (change) your life happen when you find the courage to let go of ___61___ can’t be changed. Because when you are no longer able to change a situation, you ___62___ (challenge) to change yourself—to grow beyond the unchangeable.
3. Holding tightly to the way things once were.
You’re always changing. You’re always learning and growing, and life is always evolving. Again, you can’t control everything that happens, but you can ___63___ (simple) control your attitude about what happens. So today be humble and teachable, ___64___ will surely bring you more possibilities and inspirations. The world is often bigger than your view of the world. There’s always room for ___65___ fresh idea. But first you must accept the fact that things may never go back to how they used to be, and that this ending is really a new beginning.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Around 5:30 a. m., I met my running group — the Los Angeles Road Runners training team. I had trained with them for ten long months. That ten months left me with blisters (水泡) and backaches. But my pace leaders reassured me that no matter what, I should keep going. I knew my very first marathon was coming. More importantly, my daughter Kate would wait for me at the finish line.
It was for Kate that I came up with the idea of training for marathon. My girl was struggling with her academic performance at school, especially in maths. Failing again and again beat her so heavily that she told me one day that she wanted to give up.
Of course I was angry at first. A few days later, however, it just struck me that actions speaks louder than words. Therefore, I decided to challenge myself with something that was to me what maths was to Kate, and I promised to her I would make it.
At about 6:30 a. m., I went to the starting gates and my excitement grew as the gun shot for the start and I was on cloud nine.
It was a 26-mile run. The first few miles were quite easy, but by mile 8 the pain was starting to spread all over my body, as if it had been growing like a cancer. I had no choice but to slow down. Slowing down is much better than quitting, so I slowed down from my group and realized that the rest of this race was going to be just me and the road.
Mile 12 brought about doubts whether I could even finish this race. By mile 15, my pace had slowed even further. Mile 18 brought me into familiar territory — my neighbourhood. I had slowed to a walk by this point because my body didn’t want to move an inch. I wanted to just walk home. By mile 21, I’d been running for 4 hours with what seemed like no end in sight.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)开头已给出。
When it came to mile 22, I passed my neighbourhood again.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, the smiling face of Kate came into my sight.

【答案】
When it came to mile 22, I passed my neighbourhood again. Tiredness overwhelmed me, and every step felt like a struggle against a strong wind. Just as I was about to give up, I remembered the promise I made to Kate. I thought about her disappointed face if I quit. Gathering all my remaining strength, I forced myself to run again. With each step, I pictured Kate waiting for me at the finish line, which gave me the courage to keep going despite the excruciating pain.
Finally, the smiling face of Kate came into my sight. She was jumping up and down, cheering loudly. Seeing her, I found a new burst of energy and sprinted towards the finish line. As I crossed it, I was exhausted but filled with pride. Kate rushed towards me and hugged me tightly. “Mom, you made it! I knew you could do it,” she exclaimed. Looking at her beaming face, I knew that my effort was worth it. I had not only completed the marathon but also set an example for Kate. From that day on, she was determined to face her difficulties in maths bravely, just like I did in the marathon.
