In a heartwarming act of kindness, a stranger stepped in to cover the cost of an unclaimed pizza order at PizzAroma, turning a frustrating situation into a tale of community spirit and generosity.
The incident began when a woman called PizzAroma, ordered 16 pizzas worth over $100 for pick-up the next day. The next day came, and she called right before the order was to be ready. “We told her it’s in the oven, and then she never showed up,” recalled Rocky Keefer, the manager. Unfortunately, the pizzas had to be discarded, leaving the small business with a significant loss.
“I can’t see why someone would do that to anybody, let alone a small business,” Keefer told WTVG, reflecting on the distress the incident caused. Fast forward to this week, Keefer received another call for a large order. This time, the caller had an unexpected request — he wanted to pay for the 16 pizzas that were never picked up. Keefer was initially skeptical, fearing a repeat of the previous ordeal. However, when the man offered to pay over the phone, Keefer realized this was no scam (骗局) .
“I didn’t believe it at first. I was thinking, ‘Is someone trying to do it again ’ He said he wanted to pay on the phone, so then I knew it was not a scam. People like that, there aren’t many out there anymore. It was like an angel calling and saying I am going to help you out,” Keefer shared.
The generous caller was Travis Truesdell, a fellow small business owner and army veteran, who had learned about PizzAroma’s plight (困境) through social media. With a background in the pizza industry and a deep sense of gratitude for the help he had received during tough times, Truesdell felt compelled to lend a hand.
“I have a lot of gratitude to people who have helped me out in similar situations where I was in need and they helped me with no strings attached. I was happy to be in a place to pay it back,” Truesdell said: “Any time you can right a wrong, when you have the ability or luxury, why not do it ”

Goldenseal (北美黄莲) has many uses and, is prepared in many forms. The roots and leaves are used to treat viruses and swelling. Goldenseal is also used in ear drops, allergy medicines, and eyewash formulas. Berberine, an active compound found in goldenseal, is particularly effective for many illnesses. It is used for oral and gum (牙龈) infections by rinsing (冲洗) with homemade mouthwash or adding it to toothpaste. It’s also effective as a treatment for type 2 diabetes.
For generations, goldenseal grew abundantly and was used as a medicine. But during the1800s colonists discovered its benefits and began to trade it commercially, causing demand for the plant to skyrocket. In 1908 it was estimated that more than 300, 000 pounds of goldenseal could be being harvested annually — that’s millions of plants! But it wasn’t the only problem. By1884, goldenseal’s habitat destruction became too severe.
Currently, it is still harvested primarily from the wild for commercial use and is found only in small, scattered pockets across its original habitat. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) , lists goldenseal as “critically imperiled, or uncommon” in 17 of the 27 states it is native to.
Though goldenseal has been destroyed throughout the years, simply planting goldenseal back in its natural habitat is a way to handle the problem. However, it is difficult to produce reliable crops to meet market demand.
Farmers at Appalachian Sustainable Development (ASD) have persisted and found a way to continue growing goldenseal sustainably to help this wonder herb make a comeback. ASD collaborated with Clemson University and invented a way to grow goldenseal in a more protected environment. They also figured out how to preserve the “chemical marker content and bioactivity”, which makes goldenseal an effective medicine.
The strengths of this method are that it can be grown around the globe, regardless of climate, and crop sizes can be increased or decreased based on the farmers’ needs. Thankfully, 25 farms have already started growing goldenseal, helping to recover a once plentiful plant.
8. What do we know about goldenseal
A. It can be used with toothpaste for rinsing. B. It holds significant medical value.
C. Its roots are commonly consumed as food. D. It’s mainly used in toothpaste today.
9. What happened to goldenseal in the 19th century
A. Its habitat was used to grow crops. B. It was damaged by colonists deliberately.
C. It was greatly harmed by overharvesting. D. Around 300, 000 pounds of it was lost in all.
10. What does the underlined word “imperiled” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Endangered. B. Appealing. C. Extinct. D. Protective.
11 What does the method of the farmers at ASD imply
A. Goldenseal is still a major concern.
B Goldenseal will become less valuable.
C. Goldenseal will hopefully make a comeback.
D. Goldenseal has become good at surviving droughts.
D
Imagine you went out to lunch with six engineers. Only one of these lunch companions was wearing glasses, and he told a story you’d relay (转述) to a friend. Your friend asked, “Who told this story ” It wouldn’t make much sense to refer to that person as “the engineer” because everyone was an engineer. You’d probably refer to this person as “the one with glasses”.
People pay special attention to the differences between groups. The groups you encounter frequently and early in life become the background against which unfamiliar groups’ differences stick out.
The characteristics people have in common tend to be positive qualities, but what differentiates them typically tends to be negative because most of the time, people behave according to social norms that encourage positive behavior. So focusing on the differences makes people or groups appear more negative than they are by drawing extra attention to the negative qualities that distinguish them.
In our research, we asked over 2, 000 participants to imagine traveling to a far-away planet and encountering several aliens and their attributes (属性). We showed them six members of three alien groups, one after the other. Participants liked alien groups that they encountered later less if the groups had distinct negative attributes. They also remembered more of their negative attributes. If the groups had distinct positive attributes, participants liked alien groups that they met later more, and remembered more of their positive attributes.
Our findings showed that people focus on new, unique information about people, whether it’s positive or negative. But because the things that differentiate groups tend to be negative in the real world, they focus on negative attributes. And people may also often overlook the many positive shared attributes of unfamiliar groups.
When you encounter an individual or a group for the first time, it might be helpful to concentrate on what you share with them, and not just look for things that are different.
12. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs
A. The similarities are attractive to people. B. The differences tend to be forgettable.
C. The similarities are actually unimportant. D. The differences are more likely to be noticed.
13. What do the findings of the author’s team show
A. Unfamiliar groups are controlled easily. B. Unfamiliar groups are judged negatively.
C. Unfamiliar groups are rejected frequently. D. Unfamiliar groups often behave positively.
14. What should we focus on when we meet with a stranger
A. What positive qualities he has. B. What he has in common with you.
C. What he is especially interested in. D. What negative personality he has.
15. What might be the best title for the text
A. The different attitudes to differences B. The advantages of similarities in life
C. The disadvantages of being unfamiliar D. The link between differences and similarities

My friend Whit was a professional magician, and he was hired by a restaurant in Los Angeles to perform walk-around, close-up magic each evening for the customers as they ate their dinners.
One evening he walked up to a family and after introducing himself, he pulled out a deck of cards and began performing.
Turning to a young girl sitting at the table, he asked her to select a card. The girl’s father informed him that Wendy, his daughter, was blind. Whit replied, “That’s okay. If it’s all right with her, I’d like to try a trick anyway. ” Turning to the girl, Whit said, “Wendy, would you like to help me with a trick ” Being a little shy, she shrugged her shoulders and said, “Okay. ”
Whit took a seat across from her at the table and said, “I’m going to hold up a playing card, Wendy, and it’s going to be one of two colors, either red or black. What I want you to do is use your supernatural power and tell me what color the card is, red or black. You got it ” He touched Wendy’s foot with his foot as he spoke. Clever Wendy immediately understood and nodded. Whit held up the king of clubs and said, “Wendy, is this a red card or a black (then his foot touched hers) card ” After a moment, the blind girl replied, “Black. ” Her family smiled. Again and again, her family members giggled nervously. Her family couldn’t believe how lucky she was. On the seventh card, Whit held up the five of hearts and said, “Wendy, I want you to tell me the value of this card (then his foot touched hers five times) and whether it’s a heart (then his foot touched hers) , diamond, club or spade. ” After a moment, Wendy replied confidently, “It’s the five of hearts. ” Her family let out a gasp, stunned!

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Her father asked Whit how he and her daughter did it. Whit smiled and explained that it was all about trust and communication. He had used a simple code with light touches on Wendy’s foot to convey the information about the cards. For the color, one touch meant red and two meant black. For the suit and value, he used a similar system of touches. Wendy’s family were amazed at the teamwork and understanding that had been established between the magician and the girl. They realized that it wasn’t super natural power but the power of human connection that had made the trick possible.
Amazingly, this experience has turned Wendy into a person who cares about people like her. Inspired by her successful interaction with Whit, Wendy became more confident and curious about the world around her. She started to explore new ways to connect with others and to understand the world through different senses. Her family noticed a positive change in her behaviors and her willingness to engage in social activities. Wendy’s story spread through the community, inspiring others to see the potential in every individual, regardless of their physical abilities. She became an advocate for the visually impaired, using her experience to raise awareness and promote inclusivity.
