The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles. It was almost as bad as being in school. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians (古埃及人) and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested. Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly (鬈曲的) hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn’t see what was so great about art.
On our last visit to. the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. In it, a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother’s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I couldn’t stop looking at this painting! I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made! It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.

C. She hardly enjoyed herself. D. She could understand the pictures of fat babies.

Jim suffered heart problems. In conversation he expressed little joy and it seemed that his life was drawing to a close.
When his heart problems led to operation,Jim went through it successfully, and a full recovery was expected.Within days, however, his heart was not beating properly.Jim was rushed back to operation, but nothing was found to explain the cause of his illness. He died on the operating table on the day before his 48th birthday.
Dr.Bruce Smoller,a psychologist(心理学家),had had many conversations with him,and the more he learned, the stranger he realized Jim’s case was. When Jim was a child, his father,a teacher, suffered a heart attack and stayed home to recover. One morning Jim asked his father to look over his homework, promising to come home from school at noon to pick it up.His father agreed, but when Jim returned his father had died.Jim’s father was 48.
“I think all his life Jim believed he killed his father,”Dr. Smoller says.“He felt that if he had not asked him to look at his homework, his father would have lived.Jim had been troubled by the idea. The operation was the trial(判决) he had expected for forty years.”Smoller believes that Jim willed himself not to live to the age of 48.
Jim’s case shows the powerful role that attitude(态度) plays in physical health, and that childhood experiences produce far-reaching effect on the health of grown-ups.Although most cases are less direct than Jim’s,studies show that childhood events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as cancer, heart disease and mental illness.

20. From Smoller’s words,we can infer that______.
A. Jim’s father cared little about his study.
B. Smoller agreed that Jim did kill his father.
C. Jim thought he would be punished some day.
D. Smoller believed Jim wouldn’t live to the age of 48.

The literal meaning of philosophy is “love of wisdom”.But this meaning does not tell us very much.Unlike the other disciplines(学科),philosophy cannot be defined by what you study, because it is actually unlimited.Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy: art, history, law, language, literature, mathematics, medicine, psychology, religion, science, and values.Philosophy is one of the world’s oldest subjects of study, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate(博士学位) of Philosophy(Ph.D.) in biochemistry,or computer science,or psychology.
Two broad sub-fields of philosophy arelogic and the history of philosophy.Logic is the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning. The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and period in development of philosophy.
Of what use is philosophy First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines.Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline, and its relation to other disciplines. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field.
There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems,to communicate,to organize ideas and issues,to persuade, and to take what is the most important from a large quantity of data .These general uses are of great benefit in the career field, not necessarily for obtaining one’s first job after graduation, but for preparing for positions of responsibility, management and leadership later on.It is very short-sighted after all,to take a course of studies only for the purpose of getting one’s first job.The useful skills developed through the study of philosophy have significant long-term benefits in career advancement. No other discipline systematically follows the ideals of wisdom, leadership, and capacity to resolve human conflict.
22. According to Paragraph 1,philosophy can best be described as the study of______.
A. social sciences
B. natural sciences
C. both social and natural sciences
D the subject matter of politics
23. With the study of philosophy, you can_______.
A. become a great leader
B. succeed in everything
C. find a good job soon after graduation
D. make progress in your career development
24. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE
A. Philosophy is an independent discipline.
B. Logic helps you to become a better thinker.
C. The study of philosophy brings you immediate benefits.
D The meaning of philosophy is too limited to define.
25. From the passage,we can conclude______.
A. not all the subjects have to do with philosophy
B. a person will get a Ph.D.if he/she studies philosophy
C. philosophy can be helpful for the study of any other subjects
D. philosophy is the only solution to all the problems to the world

What I Think of Boxing as a SportBoxing is a popular sport. Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches. It could be the toughest of all sports to survive. It takes boxers hours in the gym and years to develop the specific characteristics needed to be a great boxer. ___26___
It seems to me that some people, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer. This gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves. ___27___They do that because the boxer comes from their own country, and if “their” boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. It is a fact that many people have feelings of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives. Watching a boxing match gives them a way of expressing it.
___28___Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur boxers even have to wear helmets, a kind of strong hard hat, there have frequently been accidents in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic consequences. Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and, occasionally, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring. ___29___They are usually in the form of serious brain damage, even if a boxer has never been knocked out.
To conclude, I am personally not at all in favor of aggressive sports like boxing.___30___We can celebrate more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes in our society. I believe that the world is aggressive enough already! Of course, people like competitive sports, and so do I, but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport.
A. However, boxing can be a very dangerous sport.
B. Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer.
C. In boxing, fighters are required to hit a moving target.
D. Many fans are drawn to the sport because they love the competition.
E. Perhaps that is the reason why successful boxers are treated as big heroes.
F. I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV.
G. Besides, studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing.

第八部分 书面表达 (共20分)
【66题答案】
【答案】Dear Jim,
How is everything going I am glad to hear from you. Learning that you are interested in “exercise between classes”, I am writing to tell you more about it.
Designed especially for primary and middle school students, exercise between classes contains some basic movements like jumping, moving, running, clapping, and kicking. Usually we do it between the second and the third classes in the morning, at the same pace to the music, which lasts 20 minutes.
As far as I am concerned, it is necessary and beneficial to do exercise between classes. First, as the famous saying goes, life lies on exercise. To maintain physical fitness and overall health, we must involve ourselves in regular sports practice. Besides, it contributes to a pleasant mood.
If you have any further questions, just let me know.
Yours,
Li Hua
