A father in Southwest China’s Chongqing spent eight years building a real miniature steam train for his autistic (自闭症的) son. After primary school, the son named Hanghang was forced to drop out because he couldn’t catch up in classes and also had difficulty communicating with other children.
As his parents have day jobs, Hanghang spent most of his time staring at the TV screen with his grandmother. He developed a fascination for miniature trains in animated programs. Seeing this, Li Jiawei, an electrician, had an idea: to build a real miniature train for his son.
So whenever he was free, Li would closely observe the steam trains and asked professionals at railway stations about the machinery. Later, someone gave him a book called Steam Locomotives. He spent three months learning how to draw blueprints using software. Because the process was complex and the demand low, factories were unwilling to produce parts for the train. Li had no choice but to make the parts himself. At times he thought about giving up, but he chose to continue. Over eight years, Li spent more than 200,000 yuan testing the machine more than a thousand times. Finally in 2021 he built the first miniature train for his son.
As he continued work to improve the train, Li noticed Hanghang also changed. “My son improved little by little. He was no longer afraid of strangers and becoming more cheerful and lively,” Li recalled. The 15-year-old often confidently introduces his beloved miniature trains to others. Thanks to his inspiring story, Hanghang got a job at a tourism site near his father’s hometown driving his miniature train. Train tickets have become Hanghang’s “income”, but it is free for children with disabilities. “I hope society can be more tolerant and caring toward children with autism. I hope while my son lives a happy life, he can also bring happiness to others,” Li said.

The holidays are a time when family and friends gather to enjoy each other’s company and — eat! It’s no surprise that maintaining a healthy weight can be more challenging during holidays than throughout the rest of the year. Does that mean we are sure to put on weight in January
A study published in The BMJ sought to find out. Researchers examined the effectiveness of a brief behavioral intervention (干预) to prevent weight gain over the Christmas holiday. They divided 227 adults into two groups. The intervention included three parts: encouraging participants to regularly weigh themselves and record their weight; providing specific weight-management ways; and providing information on how much physical activity would be needed to burn off the calories consumed in typical holiday foods and drinks. The control group received information on healthy eating.
Results showed that the intervention group lost an average of 0.3 pounds, while the control group gained 0.8 pounds. This may not seem much, but research shows that weight gains are not fully lost in the months following the holidays. Although the yearly gain is small. It can add up to an increase 10 pounds over 10 years.
There are certainly ways to prevent weight gain over holidays. Mark all the holiday events you’ll be attending on your calendar so that you’ll remember to plan ahead. If the meal is not at your home, eat lighter on the day of the event to balance the extra calories you may consume at the party. The workplace can be dangerous around the holidays. Holiday lunches and office parties can make it difficult for even the most health-conscious employee to make smart choices. If the team is going out for a special holiday lunch, choose lower-calorie items and go light on dinner that evening. Move holidays cookies and candies to a high-traffic area to spread them around. Start new traditions that don’t focus on food. For example, attend a holiday concert or show, or take a drive or walk to see holiday lights. Catch up with a friend over a yoga or dance class instead of meeting for a milk tea.
Preventing weight gain over the holidays can be a challenge. But it is possible!

It is a common practice for old clothes to be either thrown away or donated to people in need. But now California has taken a different approach. It has passed the first US clothing recycling law, requiring producers to create a recycling program by 2026. The aim is to fight the growing environmental problems caused by the fast fashion industry and textile (纺织品) waste.
The law is not just about recycling but about changing the way people think about textile waste. Textile waste has become a critical environmental issue both in California and worldwide. In the U. S., textile waste has increased nearly ten times since 1960, reaching over 18.7 million tons in 2018, 85 percent of which end up in landfills. Textiles, when left to rot (腐烂), send harmful chemicals into the soil and water, at the same time give out methane, a greenhouse gas. Meanwhile, despite 95% of textiles being recyclable, only 15 percent are reused, highlighting a huge gap between potential and practice.
This situation is worsened by the fast fashion industry, where consumers buy cheap, disposable (一次性的) clothing for the purpose of saving money and still looking beautiful. These clothes are intended to last only a few wears before being discarded. These practices not only contribute to environmental problem but also cost people a significant amount of money over the long term. In California alone, over 1.2 million tons of textiles were thrown away in 2021, costing more than $70 million to manage the waste.
Fashion brands and textile producers must cooperate to design strategies for effective textile collection, repair, and recycling. For brands like H&M, which have been involved in similar measures in Europe, the change to California’s new system is seen as a step toward sustainability (可持续发展). “As a global fashion seller, we have an important role to play, and that is why we are changing our business towards reducing emissions,” said Randi Marshall, H&M’s regional head. Similar recycling programs in France and the Netherlands have provided a blueprint for how California can successfully carry out its law.
