From carefully reconstructed sites like Chichen Itza to the ceremonial temples of Calakmul, these are the ancient Maya ruins not to miss in Mexico.
Chichen Itza
Named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the beautifully preserved Chichen Itza in Yucatán is Mexico’s most famous Maya ruins. Despite the crowds, few are dissatisfied with El Castillo — a carefully restored pyramid that rises up 80ft and has 365 steps — the largest Maya ball court in the Americas.
Tulum
Built in the 13th century, Tulum was one of the last cities where the Maya people lived and the only one built on the coast. The pyramids here aren’t as large as other Maya ruins in Mexico, but the setting, on 40ft-high cliffs (悬崖) above the Caribbean waters south of Cancun, more than makes up for it.
Cobá
Home to the tallest pyramid in the state of Quintana Roo, Cobá was once one of the most important Maya cities in Yucatán. Located around 30 miles west of Tulum ruins, the city was built in around 600 CE and it eventually grew to 50,000 people living there. Though much of Cobá has yet to be excavated (发掘), travellers can climb the 138ft-high Nohoch Mul — a pyramid that offers sweeping views over the Yucatán rainforest.
Calakmul
In Campeche’s Calakmul Biosphere Reserve near the border with Guatemala, Calakmul is one of Mexico’s wildest Maya ruins. It has the largest and tallest pyramid in Yucatán and more than 6,000 buildings, many of them covered by rainforest. The site is particularly beautiful at sunrise, when the surrounding forest comes alive with birdsong.
21. Which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World
A. Cobá. B. Tulum. C. Calakmul. D. Chichen Itza.
22. What is special about Tulum
A. It features 365 steps. B. It was hit by a flood in 2007.
C. It was built on the coast. D. It lies in the north of Cancun.
23. What can you do at Calakmul
A. Tour the largest Maya ball court. B. Visit the tallest pyramid in Yucatán.
C. Climb the 138ft-high Nohoch Mul. D. Have a bird’s-eye view of Yucatán.

Rethink Food, a New York-based organization, is working hard to cut food waste and fight hunger by distributing (分发) food from restaurants and businesses to those in need. “We hope our example can show that it’s not just possible, but totally practical to achieve a fairer food system, ” co-founder and CEO Matt Jozwiak said.
Across the US, 38 million people struggle to get nutritious (有营养的) food, but 42 percent of the nation’s food supply goes uneaten, according to Rethink Food’s website.
Since Jozwiak started Rethink Food in 2017 with his friend Daniel Humm, the project has prepared and distributed more than 26 million meals and saved more than 2. 5 million pounds of food waste — but the project has changed over the years.
“The year of 2020 marked a turning point for the food industry as a whole; we were no exception. As restaurants closed and people became jobless, food insecurity (无保障) grew. Rethink Food pivoted its model to support both struggling restaurants and food-insecure communities; we began buying meals directly from local restaurants to distribute to people in need, ” said Jozwiak.
At the same time, Rethink Food began working not only with restaurants, but community-based organizations, food banks and other groups to ensure meals reached the needy. It also developed a program to help restaurants rehire workers and provide meals at affordable prices.
Weekly, Rethink Food receives nearly 12, 000 pounds of food from partners like Whole Foods and Chelsea Market restaurants. Rethink Food collects food throughout the morning from these restaurants before dropping it off at its kitchen. Then, the organization’s team create a menu, and prepare meals for delivery — made in the style of family cooking, but by cooks.
“We take great care to make sure the meals at our Sustainable Community Kitchen are delicious, nutritious, and made with love, ” said Jozwiak.
24. What does Rethink Food aim to do
A. Provide well-paid jobs. B. Encourage a healthy life.
C. Control the food prices. D. Feed communities in need.
25. What does the underlined word “pivoted” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Identified. B. Changed. C. Downloaded. D. Recommended.
26. How do Rethink Food’s team deal with the collected food
A. They bring it to their homes. B. They turn it into family-style meals.
C They have it reasonably priced. D. They sell it at their own restaurants.
27. What did Jozwiak say about the meals at the Sustainable Community Kitchen
A. They are too expensive. B. They are delivered at night.
C. They are made at home. D. They are prepared with love.

A rescue has been carried out and flood warnings are in place in Far North Queensland as Cyclone (气旋) Jasper caused widespread damage and flooding.
Rescue workers were called to Mossman, a town near Port Douglas, at about 12: 40 am, where 18 people had to be moved to safety due to dangerous flooding and then were taken to an evacuation (疏散) centre in the local library. Around 40, 000 homes and businesses lost power, and the Captain Cook Highway was cut between Cairns and Port Douglas.
Although Cyclone Jasper was downgraded to a tropical (热带的) low on Thursday, it was a wild night, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Senior Meteorologist Laura Boekel said, “This event is not over. We have seen about half a meter of rainfall in the last 24 hours across Far North Queensland. ”
The Bureau of Meteorology warned of rising river levels in the Mossman River, which could reach levels similar to the floods in January 2019. Areas around Wujal Wujal, Cape Tribulation, and Port Douglas faced the worst of the cyclone, and nearby communities like Palm Cove and Cairns were also affected.
A weather warning remained in place across Far North Queensland. People from Cooktown to Port Douglas were overnight warned to prepare for possible flooding. People in the storm’s path were being warned not to be fooled by the calm conditions inside the cyclone’s 70 km-wide eye, which was expected to take hours to cross over some areas. “The eye is really big, ” Boekel said on Wednesday night. “There’s a period of calm conditions in the eye itself. But you can’t pick that time period. Please stay in a safe place and wait for the whole system to pass. ” The cyclone was producing wind speeds of 140 km/h, with centre wind speeds of 100 km/h.
28. Why were rescue workers called to Mossman
A. A storm leveled the local library. B. Some cars broke down on the road.
C. People were stuck in the flood. D. A flood was expected to come soon.
29. What can we learn about Far North Queensland according to the text
A. It was hard hit by the storm. B. It never saw a strong wind like this.
C. It badly needs a growth industry. D. It is well known for its highways.
30. What is Boekel’s suggestion for the people in the affected areas
A. Keep safe until the storm completely passes. B. Have fun by taking part in outdoor activities.
C. Stay up with family members in the library. D. Report the wind speeds in a timely manner.
31. Where is this text probably taken from
A. A magazine. B. A newspaper. C. A guide book. D. A science report.

When Gijsbert Cirkel coached his son’s soccer team, he remembers the kids resting under a tree after a game. They put their feet in the air and cried, “Our feet are hot!” Their games had been played on artificial turf (人工草坪), which can get so hot that it burns. To address this problem, Cirkel and his Dutch research team developed a new water-storage system that cools the turf by using rainwater evaporation (蒸发).
A hydrologist, Cirkel studies the water cycle. His team’s new system collects and stores rainwater about 8. 5 cm below a playing field. As this water evaporates, it cools the playing surface, similar to how sweat cools our bodies. Although natural grass is cooler, the new system does a better job of keeping the turf temperature down. On a hot June day, regular artificial grass reaches 62. 2℃! That is 25℃ hotter than natural grass, while the new system is only 1.7℃ warmer than the real grass.
The new turf system looks like a sandwich. The artificial grass goes on top, followed by filler material, with the rainwater storage below it. The team included a waterproof liner and used fiber (纤维) filler instead of rubber to improve performance. Plastic blocks in the storage area have holes for water flow.
The researchers built four small fields in Amsterdam for outdoor tests — two with the new system topped by artificial turf and one with real grass, while the last had standard artificial turf without water storage. The new system stored more rainwater and significantly cooled the surface.
“The new system is a good effort and a good step forward, ” says Vasilis Vasilou, a researcher at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Conn. He likes the new idea, even though it doesn’t solve all the problems with artificial turf, for example, artificial grass has harmful chemicals, which are bad for players.
32. What is a problem about artificial turf
A. It gets too hot in the sun. B. It wastes plenty of water.
C. It results in light pollution. D. It is soft for soccer games.
33. What can be inferred about the field tests
A. They were carried out indoors. B. They were against the law.
C. They stopped real grass growing. D. They showed a cool success.
34. What is Vasilou’s attitude to the new system
A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Uncaring.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. The Disadvantage of Artificial Turf. B. A Practical Way to Collect Rainwater.
C. Unlocking the Secret of Natural Grass. D. Using Rainwater to Cool Artificial Turf.
