Language Learning Apps
Babbel
If you’re looking for a complete language-learning package, Babbel is the way to go. It teaches the basics of grammar and pronunciation, before moving on to simple conversations. It slowly increases in difficulty, with spaced repetition (间隔重复) to help you learn. Unfortunately, the free trial is limited to just a single lesson for each language. Some lessons can feel dry and repetitive. There’s no real gamification (游戏化) here, so it doesn’t have the addictive attraction of some other apps.
Babbel is $15 per month, $38 for 3 months, $67 for 6 months, $89 annually.
Duolingo
Designing gamification into your language practice is a clever way to keep you interested, and no other app does this better than Duolingo. It’s easy and fun to use, and you will soon find yourself eagerly keeping your daily streak (每日打卡). However, Duolingo is light on speaking and listening. The free Duolingo offers a lot of great content, but you do have to put up with ads.
Duolingo is free. Super Duolingo is $13 per month or $84 annually, with a Family Plan at $120 annually.
Memrise
Memrise is a useful tool to learn basic vocabulary and simple conversations. It uses a familiar flashcard method to help you remember words and phrases. There are also grammar lessons and exercises. You can set goals, and lessons are quick. On the downside, the exercises can get repetitive. Additionally, there isn’t much explanation, and advanced learners should look elsewhere.
Memrise is free. Memrise Pro is $15 per month, $90 annually.
21. What is a weakness of Babbel
A. It offers no free trial. B. It is highly addictive.
C. It shows too many ads. D. It is boring sometimes.
22. Compared with the other two apps, what is special about Duolingo
A. It’s for free. B. It’s like a game. C. It’s easy to use. D. It teaches grammar.
23. How much do you need to pay for a membership of three months for Memrise Pro
A. $15. B. $38. C. $45. D. $90.
B
Greatest of all time (GOAT). Most successful. Winningest. It sounds strange, but my favorite part of the Olympics is not which country is leading the medal count but when the best athletes in the world show their respect and admiration for one another, especially after an underperformance.
On Monday, the last day of the artistic gymnastics competition in the Paris Olympics, Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles, the Americans who took silver and bronze in the floor exercise (自由体操) final, showed such sportsmanship to Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, who won gold.
During the medal ceremony Biles and Chiles bowed (鞠躬) down to the Brazilian as she received her medal. Andrade had already come in second to Biles in two other events, but she took advantage of Biles’s two bad landings to win on floor.
Andrade finished behind Biles at the 2023 World Championships and second to Suni Lee at the Tokyo Olympics all-around. It may have been disappointing to keep coming in second, but she has been always supportive over the years, saying that it was an “honor” to compete against Biles.
For her part, Biles has admitted her own weaknesses, reminding us that just because she makes winning look easy does not mean that it is. After the all-around final, Biles said of Andrade: “She’s way too close. I’ve never had an athlete that close, so it definitely put me on my toes, and it brought out the best athlete in myself.”
Of course, it’s easy to be polite and kind when you’ve won the gold. On Monday, in what might be her final Olympic performance, Biles took the silver on floor after a disappointing fifth-place finish on the balance beam. But when Chiles suggested that they bow down to Andrade, Biles eagerly agreed, creating one of the most unforgettable images from these Olympics.
24. What does “such sportsmanship” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Trying one’s best. B. Winning competitions.
C. Respecting competitors. D. Leading the medal count.
25. What do we know about Andrade
A. She was moved by people’s support.
B. She placed third in the Tokyo all-around.
C. She beat Biles at the 2023 Championships.
D. She won the Paris Olympics floor exercise.
26. According to Biles’ words in paragraph 5, Andrade made her feel .
A. confused B. challenged C. annoyed D. admired
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. How We can Win at All Costs B. Why Silver Is Better than Gold
C. The Painful End of Biles’ Career D. My Favorite Simone Biles Moment

Brazilian artist and activist Mundano recently painted an unusual mural (壁画) on a building in Sao Paulo. The paint included materials collected from natural disasters, such as ash from wildfires and mud from floods. Mundano hoped to draw global attention to climate change, as extreme weather events have been causing destruction across Brazil.
The large mural — over 30 meters high and 48 meters wide-shows the gray remains of trees on a brown land that is dry and cracked, representing the deforestation (滥伐森林) and serious drought in the Amazon rainforest.
The mural also shows local activist Alessandra Korap wearing a circle of flowers around her head. She holds a sign that says: “Stop the destruction #keep your promise.” The artist says those messages are directed to Cargill, a US-based soybean (大豆) producer. Soy farming is one of the biggest causes of deforestation in the Amazon. Cargill says it will end deforestation in its supply chain in Brazil by 2025. Mundano is seeking to hold the company responsible for that promise.
In recent months, human-caused wildfires have severely damaged protected places in the Amazon area. Smoke spread over a very large area and affected the air quality in some Brazilian cities.
Drought has caused a terrible situation nationwide. On October 22, the depth of the Amazon’s Negro River measured (测量) 12.46 meters, showing a small increase from 10 days earlier, when the river was at its lowest point since measurements started 122 years ago. But this last reported measure is still about 6 meters below normal for the same date in earlier years.
Earlier this year, a flood in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul killed more than 180people, affected over 2 million people, and destroyed city communities.
Mundano used mud from that flood to create the mural, ashes from Brazil’s fires in the Atlantic Forest, and clay from an Amazon village where Alessandra Korap is from. “From floods to droughts, everything is connected!” Mundano said in an interview.
28. What makes the mural unique
A. Its size. B. Its paint. C. Its colors. D. Its audience.
29 Why does Mundano include Alessandra Korap in his mural
A. To push Cargill to honor its promise. B. To celebrate Brazil’s natural beauty.
C. To draw attention to global warming. D. To show the importance of soybeans.
30. What can we learn about the Negro River
A A flood here took over 180 lives. B. Its depth hit a record low on Oct. 22.
C. It was 6.46m deep 122 years ago. D. It has suffered greatly from drought.
31. What is implied in Mundano’s actions and words in the last paragraph
A. Climate disasters are closely related. B. The Amazon is home to great civilizations.
C. Natural materials are perfect for painting. D. Floods and droughts are the worst disasters.
D
“No regrets.” It’s a phrase you come across a lot. It’s on T-shirts. It’s in pop songs. It is tattooed on arms and printed on the covers of self-help books.
It seems like a pretty simple bit of wisdom. After all, regret is a dark word. It suggests an anxious way of looking at the world and calls to mind sleepless nights spent thinking about past mistakes. Who wants to live that way Wouldn’t it be better, and healthier, to simply move on
No regrets. It’s a nice idea. But is it real Does anyone actually live a life completely free of regret
Who among us hasn’t spent a fitful night thinking over something we said or did that we wish we could take back — mean words said in a moment of anger, the not-so-white lie we told our partner, the stupid decision to quit a job or end a friendship. Finally, we push these thoughts out of mind and drift off to sleep. But perhaps we shouldn’t drive them out so quickly. Perhaps, if we sat with it for a minute, regret could teach us something.
In his book “The Power of Regret” the writer Daniel Pink says that regret is an unavoidable fact of life and that it should be accepted as a useful feeling. What we regret, he says, can teach us about who we are. It helps to show what we want, what we fear, what truly matters to us and what doesn’t. It is a tool that can help strengthen our values and keep us from making the same mistakes over and over again. “Done right,” Mr. Pink writes, regret “needn’t drag us down; it can lift us up.”
In an effort to better understand the nature of regret, and the role it plays in all our lives, Times Opinion is starting “How to Live with Regret,” a new series of personal stories in which writers talk about regrets of different subjects. Hopefully, this series will help explain an uncomfortable and under-discussed subject and lead the way to more positive conversations about regret.
32. What is the author’s attitude towards the idea of “No regrets”
A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Appreciative.
33. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The white lies. B. The hard decisions. C. The terrible dreams. D. The regretful thoughts.
34. Which of the following statements will Daniel Pink probably agree with
A. To regret deeply is to start again. B. Most of our regrets hold us back.
C. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. D. The worst thing is not defeat but regret.
35. Why is Times Opinion starting “How to Live with Regret”
A. To discuss the harm of regret. B. To help people understand regret.
C. To bring people closer to nature. D. To teach people to quit regretting.

How to Keep a Long-Distance Friendship

第三节 应用文写作(满分15分)
【77题答案】
【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m excited to hear about the upcoming Chinese Language Promotion Week at your school! And I’m happy to share my suggestions.
First, I recommend organizing interactive workshops where students can learn basic Chinese characters and phrases, and practise calligraphy. These hands-on activities can make learning both fun and meaningful. Additionally, consider language games like riddles or storytelling sessions in Mandarin. Not only will it entertain participants, but it will also provide opportunities for them to practice speaking and listening skills. Lastly, hosting a friendly competition can add excitement to the event, because fun challenges often motivate students to practise their language skills more enthusiastically.
I hope these ideas will contribute to a successful event!
Yours,
Li Hua
