一、阅读理解
It’s every teenager’s nightmare (恶梦): exam time. During the last three days of the term, we had six exams.
My easiest exam was maths. All of its questions were from earlier exams.
The biology exam was hard. At first, I thought I had failed it. It asked lots of things we never studied in class, so we could use our textbooks. But there wasn’t enough time to check every question. I guessed on many of them. But my teacher said I did well.
On the career (职业)planning and computer applications (申请)exam, we had a lot to do: a PowerPoint presentation (展示), a book report and a class evaluation (评估). I felt like I needed more time, but some of my classmates didn’t think so much. They just quickly wrote down some answers and then played games.
I don’t think I did very well in the English exam. We had to write an essay (读后感)about books we’ve read in class. But I didn’t study enough.
At our school, we can “Test out” of some classes. That means students can study by themselves and then take a class exam. If they pass, they don’t have to take the class, I tested out of both computer and health classes.
Studying for those exams was terrible. Those classes go for six months, but I had to teach myself everything in three weeks. Also, I had to do three big projects at the same time. I watched no TV for almost three weeks! I am so glad it’s all over, and now it’s the summer holiday.
For my classmates, it will be two and a half months of fun without school or homework. But I’m a Chinese, and you know what Chinese parents do with their kids’ free time: still more homework.

Dawn Loggins, a homeless girl from Burns High School, is going to Harvard University in the fall.
Dawn grew up in a poor situation. Her house had no electricity or running water. So she had to do her homework in the dark. She lived with her parents who took drugs.
One summer, Dawn left home for a one-month program in North Carolina for outstanding high school students. When she came back, she found her house empty, with a government notice on the front door. Her parents had left already and Dawn became homeless.

Dawn applied (申请) to four North Carolina universities and her dream one, Harvard. In March this year, she got a reply from Harvard. It said that she was not only admitted to the university, but also offered a full scholarship (奖学金).
Dawn’s story has gone around the world. People have sent best wishes and money to her. Maybe you are an ordinary student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not surely so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.
Plan your time carefully
When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First plan your time: eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for enjoyment. A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV! When you sit down to study, put your mind into the subject.
Make good use of your time in class
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Real listening in class means less work later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly
When you get home from schools, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has referred to in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude toward the tests
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. It can help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A.Tests are the most important part in your study
B.You should take test as a friend in your study
C.You shouldn’t think too much about the exams
D.The world will come to an end unless you pass all tests
24.Which of the following is NOT true

B.In the writer’s opinion, there are five methods for your study.
C.It is important to go over your notes at home.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants. Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment(公寓房间) in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series(系列) of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses’ because ‘Jones’ is a very common name in the United States.” Keeping up with the Joneses’ came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.”
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you.”
