Green Living
THE ENVIRONMENT: A LOCAL AND GLOBAL ISSUE
To read and understand a longer text on environmental treats;
To read for detail and answer questions;
To answer a critical thinking question.
In many ways, life has become far more comfortable and convenient in the past few decades. However, this has come at a huge cost to the environment. Here, we look at three of the most serious environmental problems we are currently facing.
Air Pollution
Global Warming
Overflowing Landfills
Discuss the three environmental problems and make notes on these three points:
Cause – Effect - Solution
Read the texts and correct your incorrect information or add any new information.
Answer the questions.
1. What are the causes and effects of air pollution
The causes of air pollution are: the burning of fossil fuels, construction, the burning of waste.
The effects of air pollution are: serious health problems and deaths.

2. What is global warming and how does it affect our planet
Global warming is the increase in the temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans. It affects our planet in many ways: sea levels are rising due to the melting of polar ice sheets and countries around the world have faced extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes, floods and heat waves.
3. What are landfills and why are they becoming a serious problem
Landfills are big spaces of land used for waste disposal. They are becoming a serious problem because landfills are now reaching capacity and therefore the amount of chemicals in the waste entering our water supply increased.
4. What are the possible solutions to these environmental problems
Some possible solutions to these environmental problems are: using public transport instead of driving, recycling your waste and reducing the amount of waste you produce.
Cause: the burning of fossil fuels, construction, the
burning of waste
Effect: health problems and death
Solution: using public transport instead of using a car
Cause: the build-up of carbon dioxide and other
pollutants
Effect: sea level rising, extreme weather
Solution: energy saving and reduction of carbon emissions
Cause: the amount of waste we produce reaching landfills
capacity
Effect: the increasing risk of dangerous chemicals polluting
our water supply
Solution: four Rs(Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Responsibility)
Watch the video. Have you learnt anything new
Can you think of some more environmental problems
What cause these environmental problems
What can we do to solve these environmental problems
What do you think of the fourth R- Responsibility
What does this mean in the context of the lesson
Do you think it’s more important than the other three Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) Why

overflow vi.& vt. to have a lot of something
满是,有许多;泛滥
e.g. The garden overflows with colour. 花园里色彩缤纷。
overflow是由前缀over-加flow而成,前缀over-含有“过度” 之意,所以overflow有“泛滥”之意。 类似的词还有:
