Each Christmas and birthday, Charlie Jeffers would receive brand-new Lego (乐高积木)sets. One day in 2020 he was home building with them when it struck him that many kids couldn't play with Lego because of its cost. “Lego brings me a lot of joy, and I want to spread that joy to other kids,” he said. Given that some unwanted Lego bricks may end up in landfills,he decided to do something to address the problem.
Charlie put up posters around his neighborhood, asking people to donate their unwantedLego bricks.
Because most of the donations were loose bricks and not in complete sets, he used them to develop new sets with fun themes. Charlie delivered the sets to a local Boys and GirlsClub. The kids were thrilled to receive
them.
A local newspaper ran a story about what he was doing. “Word spread quickly, and soon Ihad more donated bricks,” he recalls. Charlie recruited (招募) some volunteers, and through social media, the project expanded across the Bay Area. Then people in other states began reaching out to Charlie, asking him how they
could get involved. Pass the Bricks, a nonprofit organization, was born.
Mailing bricks to other states can be pricey, so Charlie developed a network of helpers. They do what Charlie does but in their own communities. Recipients (接受者) have included children receiving cancer treatment in San Francisco, a boy who was shot while playing outside his house in Alabama and schoolkids in Micronesia. Pass the Bricks has donated more than13,000 sets to kids in need and collected nearly 7,000 pounds of used Lego bricks.
With every Lego brick finding a new home, a future where every child has the chance to play, learn, and
grow through the magic of Lego is in sight.

Online shopping often involves endless options and constantly changing discounts. Asingle search for running shoes can produce hundreds of results across multiple platforms, each promising the “best deal”. The holiday
season brings excitement, but also plenty of decision-making exhaustion and troublesome nightmares. What if there is a tool that can hunt for the best prices, navigate(导航) endless sales and make sure your purchases arrive on
time
The answer is AI agents, which are capable of autonomous reasoning and multistep problem-solving. Picture this: You instruct AI to find a sweater under S200 that's highly rated and will arrive by Sunday. In seconds, it scans websites, compares prices, checks reviews, confirms availability and places the order, all while you go about your day.
Unlike traditional recommendation engines, the agents are built with machine learning and natural language processing. They learn from their interactions with the people using them and become smarter and more efficient over time from their collective interactions. Looking ahead,Al agents are likely to not only master personal shopping needs but also negotiate directly with corporate AI systems. They will not only learn your preferences but will likely be able to book tailored experiences, handle payments across platforms and so on.
AI agents are moving beyond recommendations to autonomously carrying out complex tasks such as making refunds and approving pricing decisions. This development has already begun to reshape how businesses operate. Retailers(零售商) using AI agents are seeing measurable benefits. Since October 2024, data from the Salesforce
shopping index (指数)reveals that digital retailers using generative AI achieved a 7% increase in average order
profits and owed 17% of global orders to AI-driven personalized recommendations, targeted promotions and improved customer service.
The nature of search and advertising is also undergoing a major shift. Amazon is obtaining billions of dollars in ad profit as shoppers bypass Google to search directly on its platform.Meanwhile, AI-powered search tools such as Perplexity and Open Al's web-enabled chat deliver instant, context-aware responses, challenging traditional
search engines and forcing advertisers to rethink their strategies.
28. What can be learned about online shopping from paragraph 1
A. It always works best in holiday seasons.
B. It goes far beyond business principles sometimes.
C. It frequently brings unpleasant shopping experiences.
D. It usually provides the greatest platform for buying shoes.
29. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about
A. The present applications of AI agents.
B. The potential advantages of AI agents.
C. The increasing popularity of AI agents.
D. The historical background of Al agents.
30. Which is an impact of AI agents
A. Helping retailers earn more money,
B. Updating traditional search engines.
C. Tracking customers' private information.
D. Replacing the existing advertising strategies.
31. Which can be the best title of the text
A. Living a Quality Life with High Tech.
B. Reshaping Business via Search Engines.
C. Exploring the New World Wide and Far.
D. Transforming Online Shopping and Beyond.

An alarming phenomenon has sprung up over the past few years: Many students are arriving at college unprepared to read entire books. Many students are overwhelmed at the thought of reading multiple books a semester. They shut down when they' re faced with ideas they don't understand.
Why is this happening The attraction of smartphones and social media came up, and it appears that many middle and high schools are teaching fewer full books. But one possible cause that I nod to is a change in values, not ability. The problem does not appear to be that* kids these days” are incurious or uninterested in reading. Instead, young people might be responding to a cultural message: Books just aren't that important.
I once spoke with 33 professors at some top universities, who didn't think their students were lazy. It is not unusual that their students’ scheduile s are crowded with activities that are less about personal development and more relevant to future employment. “There are too many demands on their time to devote themselves fully to
works of literature that might take 20 hours to consume,” said James Shapiro, an English professor at Columbia.
In 1971, 37% students said that a core objective of their college years was to become well-off financially.
73% said it was to develop a meaningful philosophy of life. By 2015, those numbers had almost reversed (颠倒). Experts and parents alike have emphasized preprofessional courses but downplayed the importance of humanistic study.
However society changes, there is no denying that reading is of significance. If we' ve shifted what we hold in esteem(推崇), it is reasonable that we could, as a society, shift back. The responsibility doesn't lie only with Generation Z. Everyone who's upset about the change has a role to play in reversing it.
32. According to the author, what is the cause of the phenomenon
A. Many distractions from digital devices.
B. Inadequate preparations for college life.
C. A misguided belief in reading full books.
D. Disqualifications of secondary school teachers.
33. What can be inferred from James Shapiro's words
A. Schools should offer time management courses.
B. Students are occupied with their works of literature.
C. Reading literary pieces is beyond students' available time.
D. Professors believe employment is more related to personal growth.
34. What does the underlined word“downplayed” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Highlighted. B. Underestimated.
C. Recognized. D. Misunderstood.
35. What is the author's purpose of writing the last paragraph
A. To restate an opinion. B. To stir up a debate.
D. To issue an announcement. D. To put forward a proposal.
第二节 (共5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is Sugarcoat Sweet
In our pursuit to maintain harmony, avoid conflict, and prevent hurt feelings, we' re sometimes tempted to
be polite to sugarcoat the truth. 36 However, too much display of this behavior can muddy the waters of communication. Here are the dangers of sugarcoating:
37 Your job isn't to soften the blow when delivering bad news to the extent that you leave others feeling confused about your intentions. When messages are wrapped in layers of politeness, the true intention or meaning can be lost — the receiver may not fully grasp the seriousness or urgency of the message.
Leave issues unsolved. Sugarcoated messages can prevent important issues from being tackled. When feedback is not clear, it becomes difficult for the receivers to take appropriate action. They may not know exactly what is expected of them or how to go about making the necessary changes. 38 Meanwhile, the present status
will continue, leaving important issues unresolved.
Get upset and annoyed. Over time, the lack of clarity has a significant effect on relationships and can lead
to frustration and complaint, especially when one party has put in an effort to express themselves but feels unacknowledged. The dissatisfaction may lead to their suspicion of the authenticity of the relationship and doubt about whether their efforts are being wasted. 39
While it's natural to want to spare others' feelings, overly polite communication can sometimes do more
harm than good. 40 Only in this way can we reduce misunderstandings and have relationships built on trust and clarity. Remember, the goal is not to abandon póliteness completely but to balance it with honesty, ensuring that our communications are both kind and effective.
A. Reduce trust.
B. Cause misinterpretations.
C. This avoids displeasing them.
D. The uncertainty can lead to inaction.
E. This can create a cycle of negative emotions.
F. Being polite is generally seen as a positive performance.
G. So it is wise to be open for more direct and honest interactions.

Before I turned ten, I had lost both my parents. My four brothers and two sisters leftHyderabad after being adopted by relatives, but I insisted on staying behind as I wanted to continue with my education there. I lived alone in a room that a relative had allowed me to use rent-free: I got this privilege as I was a good student. And to support myself and my education.I had taken to delivering newspapers.
I would be up every morning by 5 am and walk five kilometres to the newspaper office.By 6 am, I would
collect 50 copies of newspapers, weighing over five kilograms. My delivery route covered three kilometres. After
distributing the copies, I would rush home —— another three kilometres away — cook my“breakfast”, and be off to the Kachiguda High School.
One cold Sunday morning, I got home after my deliveries, only to find a boy of my age at my doorstep. He introduced himself as Afzal, a student in my school, and said his father wanted to see me. When I asked him why, Afzal said, “He will tell you.” I assumed his father wished to subscribe to the newspaper, so I followed him to his home nearby.
A woman in her 40s opened the door. I later learnt she was Afzal's mother, Bano. She asked me to sit, patted my back and went inside. She reappeared carrying a large tray full of tea and snacks. By now, Afzal's father, Kader, had joined us.
Afzal's mother gently asked, “Tell me about your routine.” I wasn't quite sure why she wanted to know, but I told her about my morning job.
As I spoke to her, I noticed Mr. Kader filling up my plate with fruit salad. Later, as I was about to leave after thanking them, Mr. Kader asked me to wait and stepped inside the house.Meanwhile, Bano asked me, “How many miles do you walk every day ” I replied, “A little more than 11 km.” My reply shocked her.

Dear Editor,
I think it's a great idea to have OneRepublic perform at the 2025 Spring Festival Gala.Firstly, it shows China's openness and inclusiveness. By inviting an American band, we can share different cultures and promote international friendship. Secondly, it adds diversity to the gala. Their music style is different from traditional Chinese performances, which can attract more young people to watch and enjoy the gala.
All in all, having foreign performers in China's Spring Festival gala is a step forward in making the Spring Festival a truly international event. Let's embrace cultural exchanges and make the Spring Festival more colorful.
Best regards,

At that moment, Mr. Kader emerged with a new bicycle, saying, “This is for you!” I was speechless, overwhelmed with gratitude. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the immense kindness they had shown me. Mr. Kader explained that they had noticed my dedication and hard work and wanted to make my life a little easier. The bicycle would save me hours each day, allowing me more time to focus on my studies. This act of generosity not only lightened my physical burden but also filled my heart with hope and determination to succeed.
Upon receiving my college admission letter, I made a decision regarding this bicycle. Iknew it was time to pass on the kindness that had been shown to me. I decided to gift the bicycle to another hardworking student in need, just as Mr. Kader had done for me. This act symbolized the cycle of generosity and support that had changed my life. I hoped it would inspire the next student to persevere and, in turn, help others in the future. The bicycle had been a symbol of hope for me, and now it would continue to be so for someone else.

Text 10(第17题为总结题)
This is Charles Speed from Intercity News. And I'm glad to report to you an unusual story that has a happy ending. I'm at the scene of an amazing rescue that happened earlier today involving a serious fire, a two-month-old baby, and a family dog. The fire broke out in the four-floor apartment block you can see to my left. Firemen are still examining what is left of the building in case of any accidents, so I can't get any nearer at the moment. However, people who were here at the time of the fire say that they noticed strong smoke rising from the block in the early hours of the morning.(18) It was thought at first that everyone inside had got out. However, the young woman who lives in Apartment 18, Susan Docking, was outside the block and realized that her two-month-old child, Kevin, was still inside. It was then, people said, that the family dog Benji was seen pulling the child to safety by his clothing. The baby was taken to hospital soon after the mother and child had been reunited.(19) In the early afternoon, a hospital spokesman said that Kevin was in good health. The dog also suffered no harm and is now being treated as a hero. This has been Charles Speed fromIntercity News, and now I'm handing you back to the studio for the weather forecast.(20)
