Then she gave us a special task: to try living without electricity for a weekend. Our family thought it sounded interesting, so we decided to do it together. However, it turned out that it was very hard to live without electricity. After it got dark, my little brother Benny and I could only read and write by candlelight. We usually watch a movie together on Friday nights, but the TV doesn’t work without electricity. Instead, we played video games for a while, but then our tablet ran out of battery. “What about tomorrow ” we thought.Since there wasn’t any electricity, some things in the fridge quickly went bad. When we woke up on Saturday morning, we discovered that we couldn’t eat our breakfast cereal—we didn’t have any milk or yogurt! By noon, it got really hot inside our apartment, but we couldn’t turn on the air conditioner. Even worse, most household tasks became very difficult without electricity. For example, we had to wash all our clothes by hand, and this took us a lot of time. However, there were also nice things about living without electricity. On Sunday, we went on a bike trip and visited my grandparents in the countryside. We enjoyed a picnic in their garden, and we also played chess and painted pictures together. At night, we sat under the stars and listened to my grandad’s stories. This was a really interesting experience, but I cannot imagine living without electricity for more than a few days.Language notes1. switch-off /0swItS 'Bf/ adj. 关闭(电灯、机器等)的 My family had a switch-off weekend—we went camping in the mountains.2. task /tA:sk/ n. 任务;活动 Our teacher gave us an interesting task: we need to find ten ways to save electricity.3. while /waIl/ n. 一段时间;一会儿 He thought for a while before he answered the question.4. tablet /'t blRt/ n. 平板电脑 Looking at phones or tablets for too long is bad for our eyes.5. fridge /frIdZ/ n. 冰箱 Fridges can keep fruit cold and fresh.6. yogurt /'jBgRt/ n. 酸奶 There is a strawberry yogurt in the fridge if you want something to eat.Language notes7. apartment /R9pA:tmRnt/ n. 公寓套房 How many bedrooms do you have in your new apartment 8. household /'haWshRWld/ adj. 家庭的 Cooking, washing clothes and cleaning the floor are three important household tasks.9. video game 电子游戏 The newly released video game has caught the world’s attention.10. run out of 用完;耗尽 My phone has run out of battery.11. go bad 变质 Eggs easily go bad if you don’t put them in the fridge.While-reading—skimmingRead the title, the name of the writer, and the first sentence of each paragraph, and then predict what the main idea of the article will be.1 Answer the questions with the information from the story.(1) What did Daisy learn in her science class last week ________________________________________________________________________(2) What was special about last weekend for Daisy ________________________________________________________________________She learnt about electricity and how important it is.It was a weekend without electricity. What is the main idea of each paragraph While-reading—skimmingWhile-reading—read in detailRead the article again and complete the notes.Time Key words Main idea Daisy’s attitude/feelingsLast week A special_______ live without electricity for a __________ it sounded interestingAfter it got dark Hard to live ________ electricity could only read and write by __________ couldn’t watch TV could only play video games for ___________ ...Saturday morning Fridge Some things in the fridge ____________. ...taskweekendwithoutcandlelighta whilewent badRead the article again and complete the notes.Time Key words Main idea Daisy’s attitude/feelingsBy noon Air conditioner It got really__________. ...Washing machine We had to wash all our clothes________. ...On Sunday _______ things about living without electricity We went on _________.
