Unit 6 Electricity everywhere
主题范畴:
人与自然;人与社会
主题群:
环境保护;科学与技术
子主题:
环境污染及原因,环保意识和行为;科学技术与工程,人类发明与创造
Key question
What role does electricity play in our daily lives
understand why electricity is important.
explain different ways of producing electricity.
observe safety rules for using electricity.
talk about how to save electricity.
Unit objectives 单元目标
I can:
Lead in
Do you know other ways of produce energy
People around the world mostly burn oil, gas or coal to produce energy. This causes two huge problems—pollution and global warming.
Cross-curricular connection
Physical science
Renewable energy
A The Three Gorges Dam is the biggest dam in the world. It took more than 10 years to build. China is the country that makes the most electricity from hydropower.
B Some of the world’s biggest wind turbines (涡轮机) are off the coast of Britain. Their blades (叶片) are bigger than the London Eye! One turn powers a house for around 29 hours!
C One of the biggest solar farms in Australia is on a sheep farm. Thousands of solar panels make about 200 million hours of electricity a year. They also protect the sheep from sun and rain!
D Iceland has a lot of volcanoes which produce hot water and air. So about 30% of the country’s electricity comes from geothermal (地热的) energy. It’s very cheap!
E The USA grows the most biofuels (生物燃料), usually corn. Most cars there can use 10% vegetable fuel mixed with oil. Many cars can just use biofuel.
Read the text about how different countries use renewable energy, and then match the paragraphs (A–E) with the pictures (1–5).

TASK 2
Quiz.
Which country makes the most electricity from hydropower
How long can one turn of the wind turbines off the coast of Britain power a house
Where is one of the biggest solar farms in Australia located
What percentage of Iceland’s electricity comes from geothermal energy
What is the most commonly grown biofuel in the USA
China
Around 29 hours
On a sheep farm
About 30%
Corn
Discuss the questions below.
TASK 3
What kinds of renewable energy are used in your area What are the advantages of them
In my place, solar power and wind power are used. Solar power is great. The sun gives us this energy, and it’s free. It doesn’t make the air dirty, so it’s good for the environment. Also, we can put solar panels on roofs easily.
Wind power is nice too. Wind is always there. Wind turbines can turn the wind into electricity. They don’t cost much to run, and they help us use less coal and oil, which is better for our world.
Project
Making a poster about how to use electricity wisely
Step 1 Discuss the questions in groups and gather ideas.
When and where do we need to use electricity
Can we find new ways of producing electricity
How can we use electricity wisely
When and where do we need to use electricity
We need electricity almost everywhere and all the time. At home, we use it to light up our rooms, run appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and TVs. In offices, it powers computers, printers, and air-conditioners. During the day, we use it for various work-related tasks, and at night, it helps us see and do things indoors. In factories, electricity is crucial for running machinery to produce goods. And in hospitals, it’s used for life-saving medical equipment.
Can we find new ways of producing electricity
Yes, we can. Scientists are constantly researching and developing new methods. For example, they are exploring more efficient ways to use tidal energy, which uses the power of ocean tides. There is also research on using hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity. These new methods can be more environmentally friendly compared to traditional ways like burning coal.
How can we use electricity wisely
Replace old-fashioned lights with LED ones.
Install solar panels to power
your building / house.
Use electric cars instead of petrol ones.
Take part in events like
Earth Hour.
Step 2 Work in groups. Discuss and decide on what to include in your poster about using electricity wisely. Here is an example.
Step 3 Display all your posters on the classroom wall and vote for the best. You can refer to the following criteria.
creative and practical ideas
correct and clear language
logical presentation of ideas
new words or phrases
