Want to explore new cultures, meet new people and do something worthwhile at the same time You can do all the three with Global Development Association(GDA). Whatever stage of life you’re at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you’ll create positive changes in a poor and remote community(社区).
We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Most of our volunteers are aged 17-24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25-75. They are extremely important in the safe and effective running of our programmes. We have such roles as project managers, mountain leaders, and communication officers.
Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community’s access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.
Not only will you help our young volunteers to develop personally, you’ll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who’ll become your lifelong friends.

In college, I wrote an essay about Christmas Eve to catch the spirit of this special night for my family. I got an A, and even better was this comment from my professor, “I believe you have found a direction for future job.”
My essay described our traditions: turkey, church, two presents. A lot of it was about my Aunt Bud, the head of my mom’s family. We were lucky we lived closest, so she spent holidays at our house. Sadly, she’s gone now. Like so many wonderful spirits, she died too young, just after she retired with big plans for an easy life. But she’s not really gone. She visits us all often, in the form of a cardinal—her favorite bird.
One June day, I called my mom. “What are you doing ” I asked. “Sitting here looking at the tree,” she said, referring to the tree in the middle of our yard. It was about a foot tall when my dad planted it today it towers over the roof. “There are cardinals all over it,” Mom said. “I’ve never seen so many.” I wasn’t surprised. “Mom, you know what day it is, right ” I said. “It’s Aunt Bud’s birthday.” So of course, she had come to visit—with friends.
In this issue of our Reader’s Digest, we’ve collected inspiring stories about unusual events that happened around the holidays. This year we focus on people who showed a kindness that made a forever difference in someone’s life. “Angels in action,” we call them. I hope your angels visit you this holiday season. Please write to me at letters@ and share your stories with us.

7. What is the purpose of this text

The train driver completed his journey to the station and climbed down from the train to get a cup of coffee. Suddenly, the train started on its own to the garage for servicing. Not to worry; programming of trains to prove automatically from stations to railway garages is a practice that has actually been in place for over 25 years. particularly in the fully automated urban rail network.
The next big stage, the evolution from automatic to truly autonomous (自主的) trains, is already here. It will take train autonomy to a new level, meaning that the next generation of trains will be able to locate themselves in their environment and interact with other train traffic without human assistance. They will have the ability to detect and manage on their own all element s of their environment, operated by a connected traffic management system.
The shift toward train autonomy is speeding up due to digitalization. Digital technologies include artificial intelligence big data, connectivity—such as the Internet of things connecting trains to intelligent railway switches—and built-in information security. Collectively, they will enable the train to achieve true autonomy for safe and efficient operations. With these digital technologies, Rail Management Systems can automatically set routes, visualize the condition of the railwav network in real time, optimize(优化) resources, and calculate forecasts based on actual data. In addition, Driver Advisory Systems provide a continuous flow of comprehensive information to enable drivers to make safe decisions.
Beyond the clear benefits for rail operators and passengers, autonomous trains will bring significant benefits to society. That is because more efficient traffic management will mean increased train frequency and improved services in crowded areas. With more than 55 per cent of the world’s population in cities today—and with nearly 70 per cent projected by 2050, addressing urban transport issues is critical.
8. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1
A. Provide related background information.
B. Illustrate train operation and maintenance.

C. How train drivers make fast but safe decisions.
D. What benefits autonomous trains have brought.
11. What benefit do autonomous trains bring to society
A. Optimizing railway data and resources.
B. improving traffic efficiency and quality.
C. Criticizing transport problems in cities.
D. Decreasing the crowdedness on the train.

YangBot — A Fusion of Tradition and Technology
At the 2025 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, the most talked-about performance was YangBot, an extraordinary act blending traditional Chinese folk dance with cutting-edge robotics. The program featured a troupe of AI-powered humanoid robots, designed to mimic the movements of yangge, a lively rural dance traditionally performed during festivals in northern China.
Each YangBot was equipped with advanced motion sensors and machine learning algorithms, allowing them to synchronize(使...同步) their steps with live human dancers in real time. The choreography incorporated classic yangge gestures — such as waving silk fans and stepping to rhythmic drumbeats — while adding futuristic elements like LED-lit costumes that changed colors with the music’s tempo (节奏).
The performance also paid homage to cultural heritage. Projected behind the dancers was a dynamic digital mural of ancient Chinese farming scenes, symbolizing yangge’s roots in agricultural celebrations. Midway through the act, the robots paused to interact with the audience, using voice recognition software to deliver blessings in regional dialects, from Shaanxi’s thick accents to Cantonese phrases.
Critics praised YangBot for reimagining tradition without erasing its essence. However, some viewers questioned whether the human-like robots risked overshadowing the artistry oflive performers. One netizen commented: “It’s magical, but can machines truly capture the soul of our folk culture ”
12. What was the key technological challenge for the Yangbots to perform on the stage
A. Enhancing the visual appeal of LED costumes.
B. Preserving the spontaneity (自发性) of human-robot interaction.
C Achieving real-time adaptation to dance moves.
D. Replicating the emotional differences of regional dialects.
13. What does the underlined word “homage” in paragraph 3 most closely mean
A Respect B. Imitation C. Innovation D. Rejection
14. What concern did some viewers express about the performance
A. The robots moved too slowly to match the music.
B. The digital murals were historically inaccurate.
C. Machines might lack the emotional depth of human artists.
D. The LED costumes distracted from the traditional dance.
15. Which statement best summarizes the main idea of the passage
A. Robotics will inevitably replace human performers in art.
B. Modern technology can revitalize traditional culture while sparking debate.
C. The 2025 Spring Festival Gala focused solely on futuristic innovations.
D. Yangge dancing is no longer relevant to younger generations.

The night had deepened and all was quiet. But Jack was burning the midnight oil, busy with his revision work, determined to improve his grades. A wave of tiredness crept over him; he stretched his arms and drank another cup of coffee. He felt refreshed and continued to work hard. He knew he couldn't let his recent failures define him.
That morning, as the test papers were handed back, Jack was shocked to find that he got the only D in his class. Though he didn’t do well in his lessons, the unexpected grade hit him hard. Most of his classmates got their desired grades, their laughter and chatter feeling like a painful reminder of his failure. He couldn't help but recall that he always passed exams with C, and in his parents' eyes, he was a total failure. This painful reality weighed heavily on him. Staring at the glaring D grade on his paper, Jack felt he should do something. He couldn’t continue down this path. He needed to change.
From that day, he was more focused and eager to learn in class. He raised his hand more often, contributing more, and his assignments showed his hard work and dedication. His teacher, Ms. Green, impressed by his efforts, praised him in front of the class. His classmates started to see him differently too, giving him friendly smiles and support, which boosted his confidence. Everyone noticed a big change in Jack, except his busy parents.
After a month of hard work, the day of the next exam finally arrived. Jack walked into the examination hall with confidence, feeling well prepared and ready to face the challenges ahead. As he worked through the test, everything seemed to flow smoothly. When the bell rang, he felt he could make it this time.
Two days later, the results were announced. Jack was excited to see his amazing grade — B+. “Well done, Jack! We are all so proud of you!” Ms. Green said. After school, Jack rushed out, eager to show his parents his B+ grade.
