With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end. Looking down, I found all my
classmates were looking up at me. My face suddenly felt hot. Finally, I ignored them. Picturing the four steps of diving, I
jumped. Then I folded my body but failed to reach for my toes. And instead of entering the water like an arrow, I fell into
the water, with my body being flat. As a result, it caused a huge sound, which made all the classmates burst out laughing.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed. After class, Ms. Robbins comforted and encouraged me. In
the following many Monday mornings, I practiced again and again under her guidance. Gradually, I became more
confident and less shy. Finally, I attended the diving test again and performed well. This time, my classmates cheered and
clapped. I was so glad. I knew my success resulted from my beating my shyness and my hard practice.

(Text 4)

W: Yes, I am. Why do you ask
M: Then I'm sure you want to go to the Language Study Fair to be held next week.
W: Yes. How I can miss such an event! (lext 5)
W: Sam, isn't your birthday getting close
M: No. It's just the beginning of June now.
W: Oh, I must have mistaken yours for David's.
M: Yes, His birthday is in June. He was born two months before me. (lext 6)
W: Let's go to play beach volleyball, Andy. It's such a lovely day.
M: OK. But let me finish my essay first. Would you mind waiting for half an hour, Lisa You can listen to music for a while.
W: Isn't the essay due next Tuesday
M: Yeah, but I'll go camping with some friends tomorrow and I have a full day of classes on Monday, and a birthday party
to attend that evening
W: All right then, you go ahead. And I'll listen to some music. (lext 7)
W: Did you finish writing the report
M: Yes, I did, but I worked late.
W: It must be a long report, I guess.
M: Yes. But I didn't work from seven to eight because I had a visitor. It was an old friend. He was seeing around the city
and dropped in on me. But I must finish the report by ten.
W: So did you make it
M: Yes. Actually I finished it half an hour before due time. Then I sent it to Mr. Brown by e-mail and left the office.
W: When did you get home
M: A bit late. Around half past ten.
M: Jennifer, what kind of cookies are you eating today They smell very good.
W: Chocolate chip cookies.
M: Did your husband bake them for you
W: No. Actually, they're a gift from a new neighbor. Remember I had a yard sale last weekend A woman at my yard sale
had some cookies that smelled heavenly and familiar. I asked her what kind they were, and she told me they were
chocolate chip cookies. Suddenly, I was bowled over by a flood of memories.
M: Why
W: Chocolate chip cookies were the one treat I could count on at Christmas from my late grandmother. We chatted a
while, and she bought some things and left.
M: Then
W: A few hours later, she returned holding a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies. I was really touched.
M: You must miss your grandmother very much.
W: Certainly.
(Text 9)
W: Sam, you speak Spanish very well. When did you begin to learn it
M: Well, I've spent a big part of the past ten years in Spanish-speaking countries, and I've been a full-time resident of
Ecuador for five years, but I didn't begin to really learn the language until about four years ago.
W: So why didn't you begin to learn the language earlier
M: I thought I'd pick up the Spanish I needed as I went along. But after a few years of traveling in Spanish-speaking
countries such as Costa Rica and Nicaragua, I realized to really master the language, I should really begin to learn it.
W: So how did you learn it
M: Sometimes I bought some novels and watched children's programs on TV. But I think the six-month Spanish course is
the most useful for me. After the course I could finally be able to speak Spanish well.
W: So what other foreign languages do you speak
M: I studied French in high school and college. And I also learned German from my grandmother when I was little. So do
you speak any foreign languages
W: I'm learning Japanese now. It's a really difficult language.
M: Yeah. And I don't think I'll learn this language. So why don't you learn Chinese
W: 1 speak Chinese. I'm a Chinese.
(Text 10)
Thank you for calling the Tourist Line. There are many different ways of getting round the city and we'd like to suggest
some to you. How about a city trip by boat There are four main stopping points. The first boat leaves at 8 am and the last
one at 6:30 pm.
At Stop A, you can visit the fine 16th century palace here built for the king with its beautiful formal gardens. At Stop B,
there is Tower Restaurant. This is a place where you can sit and enjoy the wonderful views over the old commercial and
banking center of the city. Stop C is the area, where in the first century AD, occupying soldiers crossed the river. That's
why this area is called Roman Landing. There's a museum to visit here with a large shop which has some local history
books. At Stop D, the most exciting place to visit is the new Entertainment Complex with seven-screen cinema and video
games.
Besides the boat tours, there are city buses. Buses leave from 9:00 am, 10:00 am and 11:00 am. There are departures from
Central Station, Castle Hill and Long Walk.
The Number One Sightseeing Tour has guides available in eight languages. Buses depart from Central Station about 9 am,
