“Just go up and jump. Don’t think. If you do, you’ll just complicate things,” shouted Nuno, a photographer travelling with me on a press trip to Switzerland. I held onto the cold metal railing (栏杆), while he egged on me to keep going.
As I reached the top of the ladder leading up to the diving board suspended over a green pond and looked over at the vast nothingness sandwiched between, I did exactly what Nuno told me. The next thing I knew was that I walked to the edge, closed my eyes, held my breath and jumped.
I don’t remember the fall. What I do remember is the time it took me to break into the water’s surface. It felt like a century. For me, a male adult who got by with breast strokes and couldn’t tread (踩) water without holding onto something, it felt like a barrier had been overcome. Something changed the moment I jumped off that five-meter-high diving board into the depths of Drei Weieren, a cold 17th-century pond in the city of St. Gallen in Switzerland, which its residents crowded for a swim during summer and to skate in the winter.
I couldn’t stop smiling as I changed out of my wet clothes in a bath house and wondered what it was that made me excited. Maybe it was the challenge of doing what I would otherwise have never tried — jumping off an edge. Maybe it was the freedom that Nuno’s words forced me to pursue. What he said holds true for so much of life, doesn’t it Don’t we all complicate things by thinking more than we need to Sometimes one needs to quiet the voice of self-doubt and throw oneself into something.
I enjoyed being wrapped in exhibition, so over the next week, I threw caution to the winds and tried new things with varying levels of success.
4. Why did Nuno shout to the author
A. To encourage him to dive. B. To urge him to pose for a photo.
C. To remind him not to fall off the board. D. To warn him to think twice before diving.
5. How did the author feel after trying diving
A. He was ashamed of his identity. B. He was sympathetic to Nuno.
C. He was grateful to local people. D. He was satisfied with himself.
6. What does the author share in paragraph 4
A. Reflections on unexpected travel plans. B. Reasons for his unsuccessful diving attempt.
C. Lessons learned from his diving experience. D. Assumptions about future diving practice.
7. What does the underlined word “exhilaration” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Support. B. Excitement. C. Security. D. Praise.

Each fall, after monarch butterflies migrate from southern Canada to the mountains of central Mexico, they spend the winter exclusively on oyamel fir trees. But climate change projections predict that oyamel fir trees will disappear almost entirely by 2090.
“This sounds crazy, but we need to move the trees to higher elevations (海拔),” said Cuauhtémoc Sáenz-Romero, a forest geneticist. “Oyamel fir trees, which grow from around 2,400 meters to 3,500 meters, need cold mountain air to survive. The high-elevation coldness also allows monarch butterflies to survive the winter. As central Mexico gets warmer, new generations of oyamel fir trees will likely climb higher up their native mountains and ultimately run out of mountains to climb.”
Sáenz-Romero wanted to do the experiment 100 kilometers from their native habitat, but he was aware that the trees wouldn’t get there by themselves. “Unfortunately, the scene in The Lord of the Rings, where the trees are walking toward battle — it’s just fiction. It doesn’t happen,” he said.
His team collected oyamel fir seeds from elevations between 3,100 meters and 3,500 meters inside the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán state and grew them temporarily in a tree nursery. Then, in partnership with the local community in Calimaya, the team planted around 960 trees in the community’s forest on the Nevado de Toluca volcano. Some seedlings (幼苗) were planted at 3,400 meters while others were planted higher, in colder climates, at 3,600,3,800 and 4,000 meters above sea level. “If the fir could take root at higher-than-normal elevations, the trees might survive there in the future as temperatures warm,” Sáenz-Romero hoped.
Three years later, the team found that oyamel fi r trees were smaller and shorter the higher they sat on Nevado de Toluca. Still, many made it past their first year. On average, 80 percent of seedlings that got moved to locations 2.3℃ colder than their home regions survived at least three years.
Turning the experiment into reality will likely face many challenges. And even if the trees can survive a longer term, another question remains: Will monarch butterflies find them
8. What did Sáenz-Romero stress concerning oyamel fir trees in paragraph 2
A. Central Mexico has been inhabitable for them.
B. It’s necessary to grow them on taller mountains.
C. The high-elevation coldness does harm to them.
D. Monarch butterflies are essential for their survival.
9. Why did Sáenz-Romero mention The Lord of the Rings
A. To highlight the significance of growing trees.
B. To indicate the work required for the experiment.
C. To demonstrate his leading role in the experiment.
D. To explain the cause of the failure of the experiment.
10. What did Sáenz-Romero’s team do for the experiment
A. They planted trees at different elevations. B. They employed lab-grown oyamel fir seeds.
C. They cut down some trees in a local reserve. D. They chose warmer habitat for oyamel fir trees.
11. What can be learned about the experiment
A. It definitely promises a bright future. B. It turns out to be of little value.
C. It threatens monarch butterflies. D. It has achieved initial success.
D
On the crowded supermarket shelves, food products with carefully designed packaging and labels draw attention. Some 72% of American consumers say that product packaging influences their purchase decisions — a statistic not lost on food manufacturers(生产商).
Louis Biscotti, the National Leader for Food & Beverage Services Group at Marcum, writes in Forbes that when the FDA updated its nutrition facts label for packaged foods in 2020, food companies found they could use those labels on their packaging to provide nutritional and other data to boost sales.
He adds that 30% of U. S. consumers surveyed are more likely to buy products with sustainable credentials(认证)and that “clean label” characteristics can win over consumers. Labeling can be very helpful when determining certain things about a food item. “USDA Organic”, “free of preservatives” and “raised without antibiotics”, for example, have specific standards, and the product will need to be true to those claims.
However, a new report takes a look at the “natural” claims on food packaging and the result is eye-opening. “Food suppliers use the label that claims the food is ‘natural’ at a relatively low cost because regulatory agencies treat the claim as meaning nothing artificial was added and the product was minimally processed,” the authors explain. “Natural” claims like “all natural”, “100% natural” and “made with natural ingredients” are not defined in regulations. “Neither the FDA’s nor USDA’s policy decisions address the health benefits or crop production methods consumers might assign to natural-labeled foods,” write the authors. However, many people think a product labeled “natural” delivers benefits far beyond what it does.
At first, it might simply seem upsetting that food manufacturers are capitalizing on consumers’ innocence to boost prices and that consumers aren’t getting what they think they’re getting. But the more serious problem is how this harms food producers who are actually meeting the standards for stricter labels that are actually doing good, like ones around organic practices or animal welfare. Farmers and producers doing the work end up at a competitive disadvantage in the marketplace if consumers treat foods labeled “natural” as alike.
12. How do food companies try to attract consumers according to the text
A. By increasing food nutrition. B. By cutting the number of labels.
C. By taking advantage of packaging. D. By selling food products at a discount.
13. What do the underlined words “the product” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. A preservative claimed to be harmless. B. A “clean” label with specific standards.
C. A kind of unpopular but healthy food. D. A food item with claims on the label.
14. What does the new report find about the “natural” claims on food packaging
A. They are unrelated to food processing. B. They reveal the good effects of food.
C. They don’t guarantee health benefits. D. They involve crop production methods.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Food manufacturers’ novel sales strategies. B. The impact of consumers’ misconceptions.
C. The well-accepted standard for stricter labels. D. Victims of unhealthy food in the marketplace.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Occupied by challenging courses and a packed schedule of after-school activities, a high school student was stretched to her limit. Her well-meaning parents often encouraged her with the phrase “Just do your best”. However, it felt like a burden she couldn’t carry.
____16____. Parents often turn to “do your best”, believing it will inspire their children to rise to challenges. But for kids like this student, it can feel like an impossible standard that ties their sense of worth to their ability to perform. The truth is that nobody can give 100% all the time. ____17____.
As I wrote in my book, 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child, encouraging effort doesn’t mean we have to hold kids to an impossible standard. Instead, we can focus on fostering a solid work ethic(道德)while leaving room for growth. Here are two essential guidelines:
·Set realistic expectations: Sometimes, “good enough” is just fine. ____18____. For example, if your high-schoolers are stressed about perfecting every assignment, help them understand that not every task requires equal effort.
·____19____: Instead of saying “You’re so smart!”, try “I noticed how much effort you put into solving that problem. That kind of determination will help you in so many ways.” This shifts the focus from fixed traits(特质)to growth and effort.
Telling children to “always do your best” can unintentionally link their sense of worth to achievement. Instead, by teaching them when to push and when to pause, we prepare them for a balanced and fulfilling life. ____20____. It can be as simple as helping kids navigate (掌控) their capacity, showing them the value of effort, and reminding them that their performance — whatever it looks like at the moment — is always enough.
A. Separate effort from praise
B. This situation is far from unique
C. Praise the process rather than the outcome
D. Encouragement doesn’t have to feel like judgment
E. Teach kids to prioritize where to invest their energy
F. Most kids are valued for their achievements, not just who they are
G. We’re human and life is full of moments when circumstances make “our best” unattainable

I work for a TV broadband phone company on the technology team. We work with anything from installations (安装) to troubleshooting and upgrading services. Basically, if you have a problem with any of those, I help you solve it. Of course, being shouted at by customers is nothing odd. But I can tackle all that with a smile as long as I think of my first client.
It was 8:00 a.m. and the first call of the day was a lady who sounded angry. At first, it wasn’t clear what the problem was. After I reassured her that I wanted to help, adding that I’d look at the notes on her account and that she could fill me in on what had been missed out, she calmed down a bit.
A year ago, the lady paid over 100 to get a new TV box installed, but the service was postponed. According to the notes and what the lady told me, she called several times to inquire about her order, but she only heard various excuses, such as “We are short of engineers.”, “Someone forgot to keep track of the order.” or “We will arrange that soon.”
Why this lady had been left hanging like that was unknown to me, but I promised her I’d get to the bottom of it. She already had TV services with us, but the upgraded box installation was the problem, and she was also a carer for a family member, so she had enough stress. I told her, “I will call you and text you updates.”
The next day, I consulted experienced staff about the installation procedure, which included resubmitting the order, confirming the date and arranging engineers. I also asked my manager how to get the lady’s money back because I couldn’t resubmit an installation order without taking a payment. My manager offered to get the higher-ups’ confirmation.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With preparatory work done, I got the installation procedure started.

The day after the installation, I called the lady to ask if everything had been OK.

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m writing to share my thoughts on your current way to ask us students to answer questions in class.
This approach, where students are called by student number, has its advantage. It ensures every student gets an equal opportunity to participate in the question-and-answer session. However, it has some drawbacks, including destroying the enthusiasm of the students who eagerly volunteer to answer questions.
Therefore, I was wondering whether voluntary participation and open discussion can be combined with the method to boost students’ participation and creativity. I would appreciate it if you could take my suggestion into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
With preparatory work done, I got the installation procedure started. After the higher-ups confirmed that we could give the lady’s money back, I resubmitted the order and agreed on the installation date with the lady after she got her money back and paid me. I triple-checked that the order had all the flags it needed and updated the lady each day before the installation to let her know it was going ahead smoothly. To ensure the lady wouldn’t be disappointed again, I arranged our most responsible and professional engineers.
The day after the installation, I called the lady to ask if everything had been OK. She said the TV box was installed perfectly by the nice engineers, mentioning she learned about my dedication from them. Knowing the lady was finally satisfied, I felt a sense of relief and delight. That night, I even received an email filled with heartfelt gratitude from the lady. Reading the email, I thought to myself, “If I have a bad day at work in the future, I should always think of this lady and how much what I did meant to her.”
