EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS
Explore our wide-ranging exhibitions and increase your knowledge when enjoying yourself.
Feathered Ink
Opening on August 27
Across three galleries, Feathered Ink explores how Japanese artists have experimented over several centuries with different brush techniques in their descriptions of bird subjects. Drawing from the Freer Gallery of Art’s extensive collection of bird-and-flower paintings, the exhibition includes hanging scroll paintings, folding screens, ceramics, and printed books.
The Peacock Room
Opening on September 3
In 1876, shipping industrialist Frederick Leyland hired his friend, artist James McNeill Whistler, to redecorate the dining room of his London townhouse, and then used it to display his prized collection of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain (瓷器). Then in 1904 Collector Charles Lang Freer purchased the room. He had it taken apart, shipped across the Atlantic, and reassembled in his home in Detroit, Michigan. There, he gradually filled its shelves with ceramics he collected from Syria, Iran, Japan, China, and Korea.
Rinpa
Opening on October 1
The Japanese painting movement now known as Rinpa was a loose association of artists that began around the early 1600s and continued into the 1800s. Their aesthetic (审美观) came to define a typical image of Japanese art consisting of stylized forms in bright colors. We invite you to explore a selection of paintings and ceramics (陶瓷) by generations of Rinpa artists from our collection.

We were standing at the top of a church tower. I saw twisting streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square.”
Father’s words always guided me. Dreaming of becoming a fashion designer, I came to Paris, but without luck. Then one day I met a friend wearing a beautiful sweater. “What an interesting stitch (针法)!” I cried. “It was done by Mrs. Vidian,” my friend explained. “She learned the stitch in Armenia, her native country.” Suddenly I had a daring idea. Why not design, make and sell my own clothes
I drew a butterfly pattern and asked Mrs. Vidian to knit it into a sweater. It proved a success. A New York store wanted 40 sweaters to be ready in two weeks. I accepted the order. My happiness disappeared, however, when Mrs. Vidian told me it took her almost a week to knit one sweater.
I was crushed. Then I remembered father’s words. There must be other Armenian women in Paris who mastered the special stitch. Then I searched for any Armenians living in Paris. At last I tracked down several. Two weeks later, the first shipment was on its way to the United States!
From that day on orders poured in. Then came another test. As I was busy getting ready to show my winter fashions, the sewing girls were called out on strike. Where was the way out this time I wondered and worried. Then it dawned on me.
I worked hurriedly. And right on time, my show took place. Some coats had no sleeves; some were only patterns made of heavy cotton cloth, but on these I attached material to show what colors and textures the clothes would have when they were finished. What a show! Once again father’s words helped me.
What problem did the writer face after accepting the order

After being driven to near extinction, wolves are back in Washington State.
Wolf 32M, called The Old Guy by wolf specialist Ben Maletzke, lived some 12 years as the patriarch (族长) of the Teanaway Pack, kicking off the recovery of wolves in Washington. The pack’s territory was roasted by wildfire in 2014. But wolf 32M and his family remained in existence, bringing the call of the wild back for the first time in a century. These wolves are what Maletzke calls stepping stones in recovery - the animals that could help lead the way to new territory not yet repopulated by wolves.
Wolves spread to new territory to find mates and begin packs of their own. It is this pack dynamic that wildlife biologists are counting on, in time, to urge wolves into areas where they do not presently live. “We just need a couple to pick up and go,” Maletzke says.
All along, the Teanaway pack has stayed mostly out of trouble probably, helped by a lot of range riding (牧区巡逻) intended to help reduce conflicts over wolf recovery by keeping wolves away from cattle. “He is an example of wolves living and doing what they do, even around people,” Maletzke says of wolf 32M.
Story Warren, a student at the University of Montana, was just a girl when she first saw 32M’s tracks in the Teanaway River Valley - an exciting encounter that helped generate a serious interest in wildlife that now fuels her studies. To her, the return of the wolf is about more than the species; it is about recovering something even bigger: hope.
“Growing up in my generation, there is so much bad ecological news, a lot of hopelessness about climate change and loss of biodiversity and extinctions,” Warren says, “To have something as wild as wolves coming back to Washington is very encouraging for me - just to know such an amazing and powerful creature exists.”
28. Why does Maletzke call Wolf 32M family “stepping stones”
A. They are pioneers in wolf recovery. B. They are worth protection.
C. They are nearly dying out. D. They are victims of wildfire.
29. What function does Paragraph 3 serve
A. To make a prediction. B. To present a result.
C. To clarify a concept. D. To offer an explanation.
30. What can be learned from the example of the Teanaway pack
A. Wolves face a lot of trouble.
B. Wolf recovery counts on its population.
C. Wolves should be forbidden from human residence.
D. Certain measures to ensure cattle safety are required.
31. What does Warren think of the coming back of wolves
A. It worsens climate change. B. It fuels more studies on wildlife.
C. It excites hope for the ecosystem. D. It clears up bad ecological news.
D
For much of human history, ethical (道德的) behavior has been guided by the Golden Rule: do to others as you would have them do to you. But the rule is imperfect. What you want in a given situation may not be what another person desires at all.
In the medical field, making or influencing choices for others can make all the difference. Such choices impact people’s quality of life and even their chances of survival. As health care becomes more individualized, the time seems right for a new ethical guideline—the “platinum (白金) rule” proposed by professor Harvey Max Chochinov: do to others as they would want done to themselves.
Chochinov describes this principle in his essay published last year. He begins with a story about a health crisis affecting his sister Ellen, who was severely disabled. The care doctor, after seeing her twisted (扭曲的) body, was weighing whether to insert a breathing tube when he asked Chochinov a strange question: Did Ellen read magazines “The question was frightening.” Chochinov writes, “this was not an attempt to get to know Ellen … but rather a way to decide if hers was a life worth saving.” Ellen read widely and enjoyed many simple pleasures of life, but the gap between her life as a person who uses a wheelchair and the doctor’s sense of what he would want in her situation was too vast to be bridged by the Golden Rule. “That’s when judging from where you stand what another might need or want begins to break down,” Chochinov explained.
Time is a limited resource in the health-care system, and there’s no denying that getting to know a patient as an individual means investing additional minutes or hours. Still, Chochinov believes such investment is cost-effective. There are benefits for doctors as well. “When they emotionally connect to their patients, they do a better job.”
In certain cases, doctors may find it hard to apply the platinum rule. But there is value in the effort: at the very least, their trying to work through it will ensure that they have sufficient modesty about the wisdom of their choices.
32. Why is the platinum rule introduced to the medical field
A. To increase chances of survival for patients.
B. To strengthen ethical behavior in treatment.
C. To help doctors acquire accurate information.
D. To make person-centered care accessible to patients.
33. What can we learn from Ellen’s story
A. The doctor gave little thought to her needs. B. Her brother sang high praises for the treatment.
C. A health crisis caused her disability. D. The doctor was curious about her hobby.
34. Which statement might Chochinov agree with
A. Health care system needs investing.
B. Time put into knowing a patient is rewarding.
C. Trust between doctors and patients is important.
D. Emotional connection to patients brings job burnout.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the platinum rule
A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Careful.

How do you express gratitude in your everyday life For me, it sometimes feels worrying: hand - writing hundreds of thank you cards after an anniversary, or making sure to eat every last bite on my plate so my grandma wouldn’t think I was ungrateful for the meal.
36 Here are some tips about how to be better at showing gratitude.
Start a gratitude journal or write a letter. Make it a habit to put down the things that you’re thankful for. 37 There’s also some evidence that it could lower your risk of heart disease and symptoms of depression for some people. Think of someone in your life who you have not had the chance to thank. Think of a specific instance when they helped you. Then, it’s a good idea to send them a letter. 38
39 Look around in your immediate space, and take notice of everything that makes up your environment: the sky, the cool wind, the warmth of your sweater. The act of simply noticing and naming things is a great way to stretch your gratitude muscle as well as obtain some clarity on the strength of all the unique connections in your life.
Bear in mind the difference between saying “thanks to” and “thanks for”. Being grateful “for” something can be a little unclear or general. 40 It encourages specificity and reminds you of your connection with and responsibility to that person or thing.
A. Stretch your gratitude muscle.
B. Notice the world surrounding you.
C. Better still, deliver it in person and read it to them.
D. A habitual gratitude journal will certainly benefit us.
E. But experts say it doesn’t have to be that complicated.
F. In fact, this habit reduces materialism and enhances generosity.
G. Being grateful “to” something or someone implies a direct relationship.

Pam Bales planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire Mount. On the dashboard (汽车仪表板) was a detailed plan ensuring she could return before the arrival of some forecasted bad weather. Different from former hike, though, this time, she had packed for almost every accident and intended to walk alone.
At about 8 a.m., she’d checked the weather forecast. Bales knew from experience that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better protect her core temperature as conditions changed.
Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. She was wearing a fleece tank top (绒衣) and hiking pants, and no gloves or hat because the air was mild. Thirty minutes later, she climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She now was in a quarter-zip fleece top and gloves. At 10 a.m., the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added more layers to resist cold winds and dense fog. Making her way across the snow - covered ridge, she noticed something: a single set of footprints made by a pair of sneakers. Not giving them much thought, she walked on.
By 11 a.m., Bales was getting cold. She decided to return to her car. On her way down, she again spotted the sneaker tracks, which suddenly made a hard left-hand turn off the trail. Now she felt genuinely alarmed. She was sure the hiker lost his way in the low visibility. If Bales continued to follow the tracks, she would add risk and time to her return. But she couldn’t let this go. She turned to the left and called out, “Hello!” Nothing.
Bales followed the tracks, rounded a slight corner and saw a man sitting motionless. He wore tennis sneakers, shorts, a light jacket and fingerless gloves. His skin was pale and he had a glazed (呆滞的) look on his face. Bales approached and said, “What’s your name ” The man didn’t react. Obviously, nothing was connecting for him and he was in really big trouble.

33. A。 根据第三段内容“The care doctor, after seeing her twisted (扭曲的) body, was weighing whether to insert a breathing tube when he asked Chochinov a strange question: Did Ellen read magazines “The question was frightening.” Chochinov writes, “this was not an attempt to get to know Ellen … but rather a way to decide if hers was a life worth saving.” Ellen read widely and enjoyed many simple pleasures of life, but the gap between her life as a person who uses a wheelchair and the doctor’s sense of what he would want in her situation was too vast to be bridged by the Golden Rule. “That’s when judging from where you stand what another might need or want begins to break down,” Chochinov explained. 故选A。
34. B。 根据倒数第二段内容“Time is a limited resource in the health-care system, and there’s no denying that getting to know a patient as an individual means investing additional minutes or hours. Still, Chochinov believes such investment is cost-effective. There are benefits for doctors as well. “When they emotionally connect to their patients, they do a better job. (在医疗保健系统中,时间是一种有限的资源,不可否认,要了解一个病人的个人情况意味着要投入额外的时间或时间。不过,乔奇诺夫认为这样的投资是划算的。这对医生也有好处。当他们在情感上与病人建立联系时,他们会做得更好。)” 可推断,乔奇诺夫认为花时间了解病人是值得的。故选B。
35. B。推理判断题。根据最后一段“In certain cases, doctors may find it hard to apply the platinum rule. But there is value in the effort: at the very least, their trying to work through it will ensure that they have sufficient modesty about the wisdom of their choices. (在某些情况下,医生可能会发现很难应用“白金法则”。但这种努力是有价值的:至少,他们努力完成这项工作将确保他们对自己的选择是否明智有足够的谦逊。)” 可知,作者认为“白金法则”虽然难以应用,但是努力是值得的,因为医生努力解决问题将确保他们对自己选择的智慧有足够的谦虚。因此推断作者支持“白金法则”。故选B。

写作
第一节
Dear Jack,
This Saturday we’ll go to the nursing home and do some voluntary labor. According to what monitor said, we’ll meet at the gate of our school at 9:30 on Saturday morning and start out together by bike. So you should take your bike and don’t forget to take some washing powder, barber tools and weeding tools so that we can help them with washing clothes, cutting their hair and get rid of some weed in the garden. At last, you should remember to take some food for lunch because we’ll stay there for chatting with them at noon.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Bales stopped being a curious and concerned hiker, and began a full-on rescue mission. Immediately, she braved the increasingly wild and fierce weather to take off the outer layers of her clothes to cover the motionless man. And then Bales tried to help the man have some hot water but in vain. At the very helpless and even hopeless moment, an idea occurred to her. Quickly collecting some ice and snow, she began to rub the man’s body, from hands to arms, from toes to legs. Bales knew clearly it was time-consuming and painstaking, but it was bound to be effective.
Over the next hour, the man began to move and speak. He first showed the sign of movement through his fingers, and then opened his eyes. In a weak voice, he thanked Bales and told her how he lost his way and was trapped here. Bales kept warming him up until he signaled he could walk. With the support of Bales, the man finally made it back to the car and was sent to the hospital timely. Out of danger, he said gratefully but for Bales’ experience and skilled rescue, he would never see the beauty of the world.

W: Oliver, the life in the country is wonderful— the fresh air and the singing of birds. I’m fed up with
the pollution and heavy traffic in the city center. The living cost is also high. I wish every time I woke up and looked out, I could see flowers, grass and trees.
M: You like the country life because of the good environment, right
W: Yes. What I like most about the country is that everyone knows each other well and they’re
friendly. I hardly get to know my neighbors in the city center.
M: Life in the country may be different from what you expect. I grew up in the country. We had to
get up at five in the morning and milk the cows. We needed to pay attention to the weather forecast
every day, otherwise it would affect our farm work.

M: Can I go with you I also want to have my teeth examined.
W: Sure. Let me start the car first.
Text 10
W: Yellowstone National Park was established as the first national park in the United States. The park is a popular place for visitors who enjoy natural environment. Yellowstone’s most well-known scenic spots are its hot springs, the most famous of which is named Old Faithful.
Last fall, Lisa and her friends decided to take a camping trip to Yellowstone National Park. During their trip, they hiked many tracks of the park, exploring its natural surroundings. In the forest, they saw a lot of local wildlife. Lisa was surprised to see a family of grey bears, some wolves and even eagles flying overhead. Outside of the woods, they admired the beauty of some of Yellowstone’s natural waterfalls.
They even spent an afternoon swimming in Yellowstone’s Boiling River. Of all the sites, Lisa and her friends thought the West Thumb Lake was like a real hand, and agreed that Old Faithful was the most attractive. Lisa and her friends waited patiently for the fountain. After about 40 minutes, a stream of boiling water over 100 feet tall shot from the ground and up into the air. Fortunately, no one got wet.
