One possible version:
Dear Jack,
I learned that you had a problem paying attention while studying. Well, don't worry too much. I had the same problem before. Here is some advice that I find very useful.
Firstly, you should make a plan. Plans are directions and they can make you stay on the right road to success. The plan may include when and how to finish your homework. Next, you should spend time wisely and take a rest every 30 minutes. If not, you may soon get tired of all your homework. Last but not least, remember to give yourself a treat after you finish your plan on time. If you fail to stick to your plan, give yourself a punishment instead.
It’s not difficult to pay attention to your homework if you follow my advice. I hope you can get started as soon as possible and turn it into a habit.

How do you spend your weekend or vacation Do you often play mobile phones or computer games There is an organization which is founded by Sue Coppard and you can spend your weekend here.
In 1971, Sue worked in London. Although she enjoyed city life, Sue also missed the countryside where she spent most of her time as a child. So she volunteered on an organic(有机的) farm on the weekend. She got a few people to volunteer too. After that, the farm managers said they could come back anytime to help out.
Sue put a small advertisement in a magazine, giving people the chance to volunteer at the organic farm. The volunteer program grew quickly, and soon other organic farmers joined in, asking for people to help out. With so many people and farms joining, someone needed to organize the different groups. 15 of the original(最初的) volunteers started WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) to help volunteers and farmers find each other. Today, at least 50 different countries have WWOOF organizations.
Now WWOOF volunteers can stay on a farm for weeks or more than 20 months at a time in exchange for hands-on farming and gardening experience. The work can be tiring, but volunteers think they’d love to do it. By working on farms, the volunteers communicate with farmers and develop a love for the outdoors and organic farming. Many travelers now use WWOOF as a way to visit new countries and experience new cultures.
WWOOF is only one of the many great volunteer opportunities available. Volunteering is something that anyone can do, and different organizations accept or even welcome volunteers. So the next time when you want to do something on the weekend or on vacation, why not look for those organizations

Hundreds of millions of people in poor areas don't have enough to eat. However, more than 1 billion tons of food is wasted each year, according to a new report from the UN. That's 17% of the
food produced all over the world in a year.
Experts worry about food waste because food production has a bad influence on our environment. Farming, packaging (包装), and transporting food all produce CO . Experts say governments need to do more to encourage people to develop better eating habits. Richard Swannell, one of the experts, hopes everybody could realize the importance of food. “It is too important to waste,” he says.
The good news is that quite a few countries have come up with their own solutions to this global problem.
In China, some cities have launched the N-1 model to reduce food waste in restaurants. It requires group diners to order dishes one less than the number of people. For example, if there are 10 people, they are only allowed to order 9 dishes at most. If that's not enough, they can add more dishes later.
France has become the first country in the world to ban supermarkets from throwing away unsold food. Instead, According to the law passed in 2016. Supermarkets must give unsold food to food banks. Store managers caught breaking the law face a serious fine.
South Korea cut down food waste by making people pay up. Its capital city Seoul has made a rule, which asks its people to pay a recycling fee(费用) for their food waste, a fee depending on the amount of waste.

For Better Grades- Use Your Brain!
If you're like most students, you will probably start this new school year with a resolution to study harder. Now, science can help you keep your resolution. Recent discoveries in brain research point to better ways to learn.
How does the brain save new information Think of the last time someone told you their phone number. Could you remember that number five minutes later Probably not! That's because it was in your short-term memory.
Our memory actually has three parts. Sensory memory(感官记忆) takes in information from our five senses and only stays a few seconds while our brain processes it. Short-term memory works like a "holding area" for new information that's where you keep the phone number while you dial(拨打)it. But if you can put the phone number into long-term memory, you'll still remember the same phone number next week.
When you study, you transfer new information into long-term memory. Every time we learn something new, the structure of the brain actually changes as we build new connections to information that we already know. when there are more connections to the new information, it's easier to find it again.
Brain researchers have discovered some key points for better study. For example, make an effort, find the most important information and organize it, make the new brain connections stronger and give the new material time to soak in. If you follow these four tips, they may help you study better.
By understanding how the brain works, and following these four tips, you can make this your most successful school year ever.
( )51. How many parts does our memory have

The tomato firstly comes from South America and has been eaten by people there for thousands of years. 56 However, when they were first introduced, there was quite a bit of controversy(争议) and worry around them.
In Europe, these yellow tomatoes were first called “apples of gold.” 57 People were afraid to eat tomatoes because the plant looked similar to the nightshade plant(茄属植物), a deadly poison. However, by the mid -1800s, people all over the world had accepted the tomato as good food to eat.
58 Actually tomatoes are fruit. However, in America, tomatoes are a vegetable by law. Why are tomatoes legally a vegetable in America In the 1800s, there was no import tax (进口税)on fruit from other countries, but there was an import tax on vegetables. At that time, many tomatoes were coming from other countries into America, and American tomato farmers became worried about making a living. 59
It is easy to tell that the tomato is really a fruit. In fact, tomatoes, are similar to berries( 浆果). Both have seeds inside, and both grow from the flowers of a plant. Both also have delicious flesh surrounding the seeds. 60

1. W: Excuse me, could you please tell me how to get to the staff room
M: Sure. You just need to leave the seating area, turn right and cross the study area. As you come out of the study area, the staff room is in front of you.
2. M: Have you always been an actress
W: No, I started that quite recently. At school I wanted to be a musician. But that didn’t happen so I became a dancer. These days I only have time for acting.
3. M: The film is a bit long but I like it. What do you think of it
W: Well, it isn’t boring though it runs two and a half hours. But the story makes me feel upset. You know, I was expecting it would have a happy ending.
4. W: I’ve got an idea. Let’s cook together tonight.
M: OK, but not an English meal or a Chinese one. Let’s try something different. How about Indian food
5. M: Mom, I can’t find my student card. I thought I left it in the car.

W: Welcome to our holiday home!
M: Wow, a great house! Do you live here most time of the year
W: No! Actually, my family usually spend the hottest month of the year here. It is cold to live here in autumn and winter, you know.
M: Isn’t it a bit dangerous living halfway up a tree
W: We were quite worried about the danger of falling off at first. But nothing’s happened yet. And we leave our pets in the small garden under the tree.
M: Right. Safety comes first.
W: Yeah, and the other danger is using fire. That worries us most. So we don’t allow any smoking in the house. Candles are not allowed, either.

W: Jeff, can you talk about the most important change you’ve made to your life
M: Sure. Last year, I gave up my job and stayed at home to look after my little boy, Ben.
W: How has it changed your life
M: Oh, completely. I no longer travel around on business and I’ve realized some things in life are more important than work.
W: How long have you been looking after Ben
M: For six months, since his first birthday — and his first steps!
W: So you enjoy being a stay-at-home dad
M: Yes, I do. It’s full of surprises. Ben’s been learning to talk for the last two months. He is so smart. He was able to stand when he was nine months old.

W: I see, sir. Go to the “Services” menu on your screen, choose “Help”, and then “Repair”, “Change” and “Return” will come up on the screen.
M: What I mean, the phone doesn’t work at all. Where can I get it fixed
W: Oh, I’m sorry, sir. But I’m afraid we don’t have the addresses of any repair shops here.
M: Are you serious Well, look, I just bought the phone the other day. Could I speak to your manager, please

听第10段材料,回答第17至20题。
I went camping last summer. The place was very pretty. To the west of the place there was a lake. We went boating on it. We could also walk across a little bridge to an island where many fishermen lived. To the east there was a farm. The farmers were really friendly, and we bought fresh eggs and milk from them. Near the farm there was a hill. It was hard work climbing up it, but it was worth it because at the top there was a historical building. We thought it might be an ancient and mysterious hospital. We also walked to the local village, which was about 2 km south of the place. It was small but had everything we needed — food, drink and a tea room!
