阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Currently, there’s no shortage of tasks today’s cell phones can’t accomplish, but there’s a newly discovered downside to mobile phone use: It might be making you less attractive. Here’s how to avoid everything from turkey necks to bags under your eyes caused by your faithful phone.
Dark Circles
You may feel like you must be available by phone around the clock, which in turn leads to sleeping problems showing up on your face - dark circles and bags. While there are lots of products on the market that can help, it’s best to just shut down the cell phone down before getting into bed, or leave it in another room.
Bad Skins
Cell phones carry 18 times more harmful bacteria than a public toilet handle does. Considering that your cell phone is often pressed up against your face several times per day, that bacteria can easily make the jump to your skin, leading to breakouts and infections. To clean the oil on your cell phones from where you touch your hair and faces, you can use an alcohol swab (消毒棉) and wipe your cell phones down at least once a day.
Sagging Jawline
Constantly looking down at your cell phone to check your emails, or play a game can lead to a saggy (松垂的), wrinkled neck and jaw line, known as turkey neck. The only way to better this condition is surgery. However, you can avoid the costly consequence of this disorder by holding your cell phone in front of you, rather than below.
Red Eyes
Staring at your cell phone screen for hours on end can cause your eyes to not only dry out, but also become extremely red. Red eyes are caused by swollen or widened blood vessels (血管) on the sclera (巩膜) and can be avoided in this case by taking frequent breaks from your cell phone screen.
21. What’s the best solution to dark circles
A. Facial care products. B. Regular sleep patterns.
C. Stress relief medicines. D. Mobile devices separation.
22. Why do people suffer bad skins from cell phones
A. Cell phones cannot be cleaned. B. Cell phones can make skins dry out.
C. Cell phones serve as media for bacteria. D. Cell phones will result in your face wound.
23. What may it cause when you keep your head down for a long time
A. Dark circles. B. Bad skins.
C. Sagging jawline. D. Red eyes.
B
Albert Einstein owed his brilliant mind to having a child-like sense of humour. Indeed, a number of studies have found an association between humour and intelligence. Researchers in Austria recently discovered that funny people, particularly those who enjoy dark humour, have higher IQs than their less funny fellows. They argue that it takes both cognitive (认知的) and emotional ability to process and produce humour. Their analysis shows that funny people have higher intelligence, and they score lower in mood disturbance and aggressiveness.
In psychology we use the term “positive humour style” to refer to people who use humour to enhance relationships and reduce conflict. This type of humour is associated with relationship satisfaction, extroversion (外向性) and high self-respect. Having a humorous outlook on life is also a good coping strategy. It helps people better manage stress and challenges.
Not only do funny people make other people laugh, they also laugh more themselves. And laughter leads to brain changes, which may explain the link between humour and intelligence. Neuropsychological studies have found that experiencing positive emotional states, such as joy, fun and happiness, increases the production of dopamine (多巴胺) in the brain. Dopamine not only make us feel great, it also opens up the learning centres of the brain, which enables and sustains more neural (神经) connections. As a result, we become more flexible and creative in our thinking, and better at solving problems. It also boosts our working memory.
Evidence suggests that humour actually bolster feelings of confidence, competence and status, making funny people very influential. Humour gets people to listen, helps communicate messages and aids learning. It is a powerful tool that many successful leaders use to enhance group work and organisational culture. Studies of positive organisations suggest the more fun we have at work the more productive we are, and the less likely we are to suffer burn-out.
Research on the use of humour in education also supports the concept that humour is an effective aid to learning. Several studies have demonstrated that lessons that are delivered with humour are more enjoyable for students, and also enhance students comprehension and recall of the topic.
24. What can we learn from the researchers in Austria
A. People enjoy dark humour most. B. Less funny people are aggressive.
C. Funny people are always emotional. D. Humourous people have a brilliant mind.
25. What does the author intend to show in Paragraph 3
A. The benefit of laughter. B. The reason of our brain changes.
C. The way of being creative in thinking. D. The association of humor and intelligence.
26. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “bolster”
A. Combine. B. Increase. C. Explain. D. Distribute.
27. What can be concluded from the research in education
A. Teachers are always humour in class.
B. Students can understand humour better in class.
C. Humourous classes are more efficient for students.
D. Effective learning depends on students’ humour levels.
C
Airplane disasters are statistically rare. When they do happen, however, they are often destructive and people want answers as to why their loved ones lost their lives, and that is where black boxes come into play.
A black box is an electronic recording device, placed in an aircraft to facilitate the investigation of flight accidents and incidents. There are two different flight recorder devices. The flight data recorder (FDR) preserves the recent history of the flight, things like airspeed, altitude, vertical acceleration (垂直加速度) and fuel flow. The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) preserves the recent history of the sounds in the cockpit, including the conversation between the pilots as well as with the air traffic control tower, which can give vital clues to investigators in case of a crash. The two devices may be combined in a single unit on every commercial flight, usually kept in the tail of an aircraft, where they are more likely to survive a crash.
A black box is equipped with an underwater locator beacon (ULB). If an aircraft crashes into water, the beacon sends out an ultrasonic pulse (超声脉冲) that is detectable by sonar (声纳) and audio equipment to depths to approximately 14,000 feet. Incredibly, the beacon is powered by a battery that has a shelf life of six years; once the beacon begins pinging (a command in computer language), it pings once per second for 30 days until its battery runs out. If a plane crash takes place on land and not on water, the locator beacons of the black box will not send out the ultrasonic pings, signalling the investigators to look for the unit around the crash site.
The term “black box” was a World War II British phrase, originating with the development of radio, radar, and electronic navigational aids in British and Allied combat aircraft. These often-secret electronic devices were literally encased in non-reflective black boxes or housings, hence the name “black box”. These black boxes are of flame-orange in colour. The recorders are bright orange to make them more visually eye-catching in the ruins after an accident.
28. What’s the function of a CVR
A. To preserve airspeed during a fight. B. To record sounds of a flight history.
C. To conduct the pilot in the right direction. D. To keep the balance of the plane in the air.
29. Why is a black box usually kept in a tail of a plane
A. It will work to the fullest there. B. It’s too big to fit in elsewhere in a plane.
C. It can be easily found in an investigation. D. It’s likely to be well-preserved in a crash.
30. How can people locate a black box in the depth of ocean
A. By detecting signals from ULB. B. By charging the powerful battery.
C. By identifying the exact crash site. D. By sending out an ultrasonic pulse.
31. What can we learn about “Black box” from the last paragraph
A. It can hardly be seen in the ruins. B. It never changes colours all the time.
C. It advanced from electronic devices at war. D. It served as different aids in combat aircraft.
D
Courtney told Today her son Alex started experiencing difficult symptoms when he was four years old. “I have to give him Motrin every day, or he has these terrible meltdowns.” Courtney said. The painkillers helped, but other worrisome symptoms started appearing. Alex had stopped growing, and wasn’t walking the way he should have been.
The family saw a shocking number of experts to try to figure out what was wrong with Alex, including a paediatrician, a neurologist, an ear nose and throat specialist, and more. In total, Courtney said they consulted 17 doctors, but they were left frustrated and without answers.
After three years of doctors’ appointments, Courtney turned to ChatGPT for answers. The chatbot, created by a company called OpenAI, led Courtney to discover cause, which was later confirmed as a complication of spina bifida (脊柱裂). Courtney subsequently said she felt “every emotion in the book, relief, steadiness, and excitement for his future”.
Researchers are already looking into the effects of ChatGPT on medicine. A new study stated that the technology does have both benefits and drawbacks for the field. “The potential applications of ChatGPT in the medical field range from identifying potential research topics to assisting professionals in clinical and laboratory diagnosis (诊断),” the paper said. “However, despite its potential applications, the use of ChatGPT in medical writing also poses ethical and legal issues”.
Experts agree that ChatGPT could potentially help certain people navigate the healthcare system, but that it’s not there yet. As Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, president of the American Medical Association said to Today, “While AI products show tremendous promise in helping relieve physician administrative burdens and may ultimately be successfully applied in direct patient care, they currently have known issues and are not error free”. He explained that AI can produce false information, inaccuracies, or errors that “can harm patients”.
32. What’s the major problem when dealing with Alex’s disease
A. The unknown cause. B. The ineffective drugs.
C. The unaffordable cost. D. The unavailable experts.
33. Why did the author mention the story of Courtney’s family
A. To prove Courtney’s love for her son. B. To stress the important status of experts.
C. To express sympathy for the poor family. D. To show AI’s application in the medical field.
34. What’s the concern reported in the new study
A. ChatGPT would replace human doctors. B. ChatGPT could be misused in some way.
C. ChatGPT had little effect on clinical trials. D. ChatGPT showed no potential application.
35. Which statement would Jesse M. Ehrenfeld agree with
A. Physicians’ burdens have been taken off. B. AI’s application still has a long way to go.
C. ChatGPT can accurately direct patient care. D. New technology is not suitable for health care.

On his 10-year-old birthday party, Andrew received a delicate small notebook from his parents as a gift. It was a little different from other notebooks, since it had a place where Andrew could put a pencil. “So convenient!” Andrew loved it so much and always kept it along with him in a pocket.
Whenever he noticed something interesting, Andrew would write it down in the notebook. One afternoon, after Andrew returned from school, he called his best friend, Kris, a well-trained shepherd dog (牧羊犬) and said, “Come, Kris! Let’s go out and have fun.” They went to the Pasture field (牧扬) to catch the butterflies and there they found a shaft (通风井), which seemed to be deserted for a long time. Andrew sat down on the edge of the shaft, bending over to see how deep it was. Suddenly, he lost his balance and fell in. “Help! Help!” Andrew called desperately. But no response at all. He was so far away from the house. He made several attempts to climb up the shaft but again he failed! Now Andrew was exhausted and frustrated. When Kris saw his master falling into the shaft, the little good companion ran round and round, reaching down and trying to pull him out. Unfortunately, a piece of rock gave way under his feet, and he fell in the shaft too!
It was getting dark. When Andrew’s mother came back from work and found there was no one at home, she was anxious and worried. Without any clue at home, she decided to look for Andrew outside. She went to all the trees under which Andrew was in the habit of playing, but he was nowhere to be found. By this time, the sun had gone down. A feeling of panic took hold of her. She comforted herself that Andrew might have come back. She rushed back, hoping to find her son at home.

Unexpectedly she found Kris sitting in front of the door, with a notebook in his mouth. A sense of confusion taking hold of her, she took the notebook and quickly opened it only to find a message from Andrew, reading, “Help! I am in a shaft in the pasture!” Half overjoyed and half anxious, Mum gestured Kris to lead the way. Seeming to understand her and wagging his tail wildly, Kris turned around and ran forward fast. Mrs. Lee followed him closely to the shaft of the pasture, where Andrew was alive and well. How glad Andrew was when his mother caught him by the arms and lifted him out!
Successfully rescued Andrew explained to Mum how he came up with the idea. After he and Kris both fell into the shaft, he tried to calm himself down and think of how to get out. The moment he touched the notebook in his pocket, a good idea occurred to him. He took it out, wrote down the message. Then he bent down, lifted the dog up with all his strength, raised himself upon tiptoe and helped him out. Kris, being a smart and obedient dog, took Andrew’s notebook and raced to get help. Having heard this, Mum was amazed at her son’s quick mind and thanked Kris for his bravery and loyalty.
