Having perfected his craft for more than 50 years, Josh Simpson is widely known for one-of-a-kind “Planet” globes that hold novel and fantastic shapes and colors. Decades ago, he gave glassblowing demonstrations to local students in his studio in Springfield, Massachusetts. Simpson started by showing the middle-school students how to make marbles(弹珠).
Josh Simpson’s works have been exhibited in the White House and numerous international museums. Select pieces are currently on permanent display at the Corning Museum of Glass, Yale University Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts and many more. As a master of glass blower, Simpson has been shaping glass into art for more than 50 years. His creations, which have been showcased around the world, range from the small planetary globes to the world’s largest paper weight. The 100-pound Megaplanet was commissioned(委托) by the Corning Museum of Glass in New York State. “Simpson is a wonderful artist and teacher who connects the natural world to glass in a way that creates joy,” said Amy Schwartz, director of a glass-making school.
More than 3,000 of Simpson’s palm-sized planets are hidden around the world. He got the idea of hiding his tiny glass creations in 1976, after finding children’s marbles from long ago in his garden. In 2000, he invited others to help him hide the planets. He calls the archaeological adventure “The Infinity Project”. “The Infinity Project connects people to glass because we’re endlessly fascinated by those tiny little worlds and how they’re created,” Schwartz said.
“Melted glass is one of the most challenging materials for an artist to work with. The hot liquid just wants to drip on the floor. It will burn you if you touch it. Working with a material like that is amazing and challenging, but it’s also really fun. I’d like to hide more planets in museums.” Schwartz told the journalist in an interview.
24.What is Josh Simpson’s main artistic focus
A. Painting beautiful planets.
B. Sculpting metal globes.
C. Creating tiny glass planets.
D. Designing large marble structures.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about

B. Simpson’s artistic achievements.
C. Simpson’s glass-making partners.
D. Simpson’s creative inspiration.
26. What inspired Simpson to hide his tiny glass planets worldwide
A. The discovery of children’s marbles in his garden.
B. A commission from the Corning Museum of Glass.
C. The success of his glassblowing demonstrations.
D. The idea of connecting people through art.
27.Which of the following is the best title for the text

When visiting a doctor a few years from now, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be displayed onto a physician’s computer screen. Updated with your latest vital signs, it will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis. It also opens the door for medicines and procedures designed specifically for you, increasing recovery rates.
This might seem like fantasy, but the foundations are being laid. Researchers at Queen Mary University of London(QMUL) already use computer simulations(模拟)of the hearts of patients to assess different treatments for a heart disorder. It would be far too dangerous to experiment this way on someone’s real heart.
Digital twins are starting to pop up everywhere, monitoring the health of jet engines on airliners and letting carmakers shave years off the development of new models by simulating test drives and crashes. All this is being turbo-charged by recent progress inartificial intelligence(AI), which gives twins the ability to make predictions about their physical counterparts(对应的事物), and fine-tune themselves on new information.
Digital twins began as basic computer models of physical objects and systems and have become more advanced with computers becoming more plex design and modelling software means many physical objects initially take shape in the virtual world. Small sensors feed twins with real-time data, ensuring that they mirror their physical counterparts.
Digital twins make it easier for humans to tackle complex problems, allowing people to peer into the future, spotting problems before they materialize and testing wild ideas without real-world consequences. For businesses, this should mean better designs and operations. For society, the promise is equally appealing: personalized health care, and clues as to how the planet might avoid environmental catastrophe.
Could these virtual twins go out of control They might if they are programmed badly, or hacked into. Digital twins will gobble up(吞噬)mountains of data, some of it wrong or prejudiced and much of it raising concerns about privacy. Yet these risks are not specific to digital twins. They apply to all emerging technologies, as they always have and always will. The emergence of the digital mirror world will doubtless raise new questions, but its potential advantages are already plain to see.
28.What is the main function of a digital twin of a patient
A. To replace the patient in doctor visits.
B. To track the results of physical checkups.
C. To assist doctors in making accurate diagnoses.
D. To store all the patient’s past medical records.
29. Why do researchers at QMUL use computer simulations of hearts
A. Because it can reduce the cost of the operation.
B. Because it is more convenient than using real hearts.
C. Because it can help increase patients’ recovery rates.
D. Because it can avoid the risk of experimenting on real hearts.
30. How does AI contribute to the development of digital twins
A. It creates the basic computer models of physical systems.
B. It offers the ability to forecast and adjust based on new data.
C. It enables the perfect simulation of all physical objects.
D. It tackles the complex problems in the real-world application.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards the digital twins
A. Cautious. B. Indifferent. C. Optimistic. D. Critical.
D
Language is so deeply embedded in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. What would be the consequence if we didn’t have names for things or didn’t have experience talking about things that hadn’t actually happened Would we be able to think What would our thoughts be like
The answer to the question of whether thought is possible without language depends on what you mean by “thought”. Can you experience impressions and feelings without language Yes, and very few would argue otherwise. But there is a difference between being able to experience “pain” and possessing the concept “pain”. Most would say true thought involves having the concept.
Many artists and scientists, in describing their own inner processes while they work, say they do not use words to solve problems, but images. The autistic(患自闭症的) author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks visually rather than linguistically, says that concepts for her are collections of images.
Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but it’s not unimaginable----and probably likely---- that there are people who are deficient in the ability to use language and think in the way she describes.
There is evidence that deaf people cut off from language possess the ability to think before being exposed to language. Also, the sign languages developed by deaf students without language models display the kind of thinking that goes far beyond mere sensory impression or practical problem solving.
However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, there are certain kinds of thinking that are made possible by language. Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise. The philosopher Peter Carruthers has argued that there is a type of inner, explicitly linguistic thinking that allows us to bring our own thoughts into conscious awareness. We may be able to think without language, but language lets us know we are thinking.
32.What does the author intend to show with the experience of Temple Grandin
A. People without language can’t think.
B. Language has no influence on thinking.
C. Some people may think in a non-linguistic way.
D. Autistic people have a special way of using language.
33. Which of the following best explains “deficient” underlined in paragraph 4
A. Flexible. B. Lacking. C. Confident. D. Experienced.
34.What could we learn from the last paragraph
A. Language facilitates abstract reasoning.
B. Language is merely useful for reflection.
C. Language is a must for people to perceive the world.
D. Language restricts people’s ability to think visually.
35. What is the writing purpose of the text
A. To stress the importance of language in daily life.
B. To advocate the thinking modes of scientists and artists.
C. To demonstrate the cognitive abilities of average individuals.
D. To show the relationship between thought and language.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We often view pain as an unwelcome invader, a negative sensation we’d rather do without. 36 What if, instead of an enemy, it’s a friend trying to guide us toward a better life
Imagine a life without the sensation of pain. While it might seem perfect at first, the reality is that physical pain plays a crucial role in our survival. It acts as a warning system, alerting us to injuries, illnesses, and potential dangers. 37 It’s our body’s way of saying, “Something is wrong, please pay attention!” By addressing the underlying cause of the pain, we can begin to heal and improve our physical well-being.
Just as physical pain alerts us to problems in our bodies, emotional pain signals deeper issues within our minds and hearts. Unfortunately, we often try to ignore these feelings, telling ourselves to “toughen up” or “get over it”. But mental pain is not a sign of weakness; it’s a vital alarm bell, urging us to pay attention to our emotional well-being. 38
We are creatures of habit, often resisting changes, even when they’re crucial for our well-being. Think of someone who loves unhealthy foods despite knowing they contribute to physical pain. It takes conscious effort to break free from these habits and embrace a healthier lifestyle. 39 we may stay in unsatisfying jobs or unfulfilling routines because they feel familiar and safe. But these choices can lead to emotional pain.
40 It’s about paying attention to the signals our bodies and minds are sending and having the courage to make changes, even if they seem frightening at first.
A. The same applies to emotional pain.
B. Pain is inevitable and suffering is optional.
C. Ignoring these signals can lead to worsening mental health.
D. But what if pain, both physical and emotional, serves a deeper purpose
E. Mental pain is a major public health problem that has a damaging effect.
F. To truly heal, we must learn to listen to both our physical and emotional pain.
G. While physical pain can be unpleasant, it’s essential to recognize its purpose.

Kaylie and I had been good friends since Grade 1. Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. And the more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were. We both liked baking extra-creative cookies, we both had awesome (and sometimes annoying) younger siblings, and we both have the same favorite song and even animal----dolphin.
Last summer, we went to the Arts and Crafts Fair in our park. There were so many things to see. We didn’t know where to begin. We had fun walking around the rows and rows of art booths, clothing racks and knickknack tables. I found the best polka-dot hat, but it cost too much. Kaylie fell in love with a yo-yo, but she looked at the price tag, and yup----it cost too much! To tell you the truth, we were starting to get discouraged. Just as we were about to give up on finding anything we could afford, we came to a table with gobs of gorgeous bracelets (手链). “These are so cool,” I said, picking up one with moons and stars. “And look, they’re in my price range!”
“Please try anything on. The beads(珠子) come from Thailand, and I string each bracelet with love. My name is Tex,” the jeweler said with a friendly smile. Then at the same moment, we both saw it! A bracelet with colorful beads shone brightly in the light, including two pink beads in the shape of dolphin, which added a playful touch to the design. It was the only bracelet like it on the table. Reaching for the bracelet together, we asked Tex if he possibly had any more dolphin bracelets just like this. To our disappointment, that was the last one.

Launching Your Career
Last week, a lecture on career planning was held in our school hall, which aimed to guide students to plan for future development.
At the very beginning, a video was shown to everyone present, which aroused our interest in the topic. After that, several experts shared their insights into various professions and provided constructive advice on career planning. They encouraged us to explore our interests and talents. Finally, the event concluded with students actively participating in discussions and Q&-A sessions.
The lecture was highly thought of. Not only did it inspire me to think critically about my future, but also it strengthened my confidence and motivation to launch my career and achieve my goals.
读后续写
Staring at the bracelet, both of us were hesitant. Obviously, neither of us could bear to put it down because the bracelet was so delicate. After all, it was a dolphin bracelet----just our favourite! However, seeing the eagerness in Kaylie's eyes, I whispered, “It should be yours; it matches your style perfectly.” She shook her head, insisting that 1 should have it since it was I who found it first. Meanwhile, torn between the two of us, Tex was completely at a loss what to do, standing there helplessly.
When we both looked at the two dolphin beads in the bracelet, our eyes lit up. “What if we split the two dolphin beads and each make our own bracelet ” we exclaimed, excitement bubbling. Tex felt relieved, quickly removed a dolphin bead, picked out colorful beads to match it and strung them onto another bracelet. When he handed us our new bracelets, we grinned, realizing it didn't matter who would wear it; what mattered was our friendship and the joy we found in sharing this special moment. From then on, Kaylie and I shared one more thing----a dolphin bracelet!
