A Dutch museum has recovered an artwork that looks like two empty beer cans after a staff member accidentally threw it in the rubbish bin.
The work, entitled All the Good Times We Spent Together by the French artist Alexandre Lavet, appears on first glance to be two abandoned and dented (瘪的) beer tins. However, a closer look shows they are carefully hand-painted and required a lot of time and effort to create. Their artistic value was lost on a mechanic, who saw them displayed in a lift and threw them in the bin. The curator (馆长) Elisah van den Bergh returned from a short break and noticed the cans had disappeared. She recovered them from a bin bag just as they were about to be thrown out.
Froukje Budding, of the LAM museum in Lisse, western Netherlands, said artworks were often left in unusual places—hence the display in a lift. “We try to surprise visitors for all the time,” she said. “We have now put the work in a more traditional place on a plinth (底座) so it can rest after its adventure.” She stressed there were no hard feelings towards the mechanic, who had just started at the museum, stating that he was simply performing his duties.
Sietske van Zanten, the museum’s director, emphasized the museum’s mission to encourage visitors to see everyday objects in a new light. “By displaying artworks in unexpected places, we enhance this experience and keep visitors on their toes,” he added.

In Portugal, near the town of Alqueva, lies Europe’s largest artificial lake, home to an innovative floating solar-power plant developed by EDP, a leading renewable energy company. Despite initial skepticism about the high costs and potential issues of floating solar technology, this project represents the sector’s maturation and readiness for expansion.
In this first phase of the project at Alqueva, engineers have stationed some 12,000 PV modules (光伏组件) on floating platforms made from partially recycled plastic and locally sourced soft wood. These are connected to an energy-storage system combining batteries and are integrated with the hydroelectric dam’s power station.
Floating solar projects do face plenty of challenges. The kit has to be water-, wave-, wind- and storm-resistant, which adds complexity and cost. The fish in lakes attract plenty of birds, whose droppings can block the sun. To deal with this, engineers for the project at Alqueva have developed remote-controlled cleaning robots and are working on autonomous ones.
Yet floating solar projects also enjoy several advantages. When located at existing hydroelectric dams they do not require any additional land and can be connected to the grid (电网) without the multi-year wait common for solar projects. The cooling effect of being on water boosts the efficiency of the modules, with studies suggesting gains of between 5% and 15%over land-based PV, while the shade they produce slows the water loss of the lake.
EDP views floating solar as a cornerstone of its renewable energy strategy. The initial 5megawatt s (MW, 兆瓦) capacity at Alqueva may seem modest, but it’s just the beginning. The company is planning a second phase, which will see an additional 70MW capacity by 2025. According to Wood Mackenzie, a leading consultancy, floating solar technology could deliver up to 60,000MW of renewable energy globally by 2031. “This may pale in comparison to the 1,600,000MW of solar capacity installed as of last year. But every bit counts,” he added.

Today and every day we are the targets of advertisers, fundraisers and politicians trying to persuade us to buy something, do something or think a certain way. And they’re good at it.
Over the years, they’ve learned a lot about which features to build into a communication and which psychological strings to pull at to increase its success. But by concentrating on the message itself, they’ve missed a crucial component of the process.
Research done in the last 15 years shows that best persuasion is achieved through pre-suasion — the practice of arranging for people to agree with a message before they even know what’s in it.
Pre-suasion works by focusing people’s attention on a selected concept, which in turn stimulates them to overvalue it over related ones. In one study, visitors to an online sofa store were greeted with images of either soft clouds or small coins in the background of its landing page. Those who saw the clouds were more likely to prefer soft, comfortable sofa s for purchase whereas those who saw the money preferred cheaper models.
Long before scientists started studying the process of pre-suasion, a few notable communicators already had an intuitive（直觉的）understanding of it.
For example, the pre-suasive strategy was employed in the late 1950s by the advertising firm Doyle Dane Bernbach to introduce the oddly shaped Volkswagen Beetle to a US market dominated by big, powerful, boat-like vehicles. The “We’re ugly but...” campaign strategically admitted to limitations in appearance before trumpeting（鼓吹）the auto’s strengths such as economy, reliability and simplicity. Credited with breaking open the US market for small cars, the ad campaign has been rated among the greatest of all time.
With considerable success, practitioners of social influence have always featured persuasive elements — great praises, emotional pull, lastchance opportunities—in their appeals. Perhaps because of that success, they’ve mostly missed an accompanying truth. For maximum impact, it’s not only what you do; it’s also what you do just before you do what you do.
