As the first snows of the season start to fall, mountain towns across the Alps welcome winter visitors with smart new hotels. And this year is no different. Here are the best resorts (旅游胜地) to bed down in the Alps this season.
Experimental Chalet, Val d’Isère
France’s ski resort welcomes the newest hotel offering from the Experimental cocktail group. With the rebuilding of this lodge, you’ll find two new restaurants, a spa and a cocktail bar. In a resort filled with après-ski, this looks set to stand in a class of its own. From ?423 ( 356) per night, room only.

Welsh chef Bryn Williams opened a restaurant here in the Swiss Alps a few years ago. From ?650 ( 580) per night, all-inclusive.
Eriro, Ehrwalder Alm

In 2013, Deegan was trying to take control of her life after winning the fight against drinking. She did quit, but she was having difficulty reconnecting with people. Even looking someone in the eye proved to be difficult. “I was sort of like a shell of a person and just didn’t really have many life skills or self-confidence,” Deegan said.
However, baking was something that always brought her joy as a child. One day while helping out in the neighborhood, Deegan picked up a handheld mixer and started baking. “My life was just out of control, but baking is such a controlled thing, where if you take the right steps and follow the directions, you’ll get a pretty exact result,” she said.
Deegan started bringing her homemade baked cookies to people’s homes, which helped her reconnect with people. “Feeding people is such a universal love language,” she said. However, she was still trying to figure out how to find a career at 27 years old. She had no real work experience and she couldn’t put ‘quit drinking’ on her resume.
Deegan’s life shifted in 2015. Encouraged by her friends, she challenged herself to see if she could sell just one pie. She sold dozens! She began baking out of her tiny apartment and eventually launched an official business in 2017. She spent four years developing a pie crust cookie recipe, which has since become the bread and butter of her business. “People have been walking, running and lining up to get cookies, and it’s just been so magical seeing that,” she said.
When she needs more help, Deegan says she looks for anyone who is just excited to work, even if they don’t have any experience. After her own struggle, she realized that the desire to work was better than having a certain skill set. And she became a second-chance employer, hiring women out of prison or the shelter system. “You just have to walk through the door and be ready, willing and able and excited to show up and work and you’ ve got a job,” Deegan told the reporter.
24. What was Deegan mainly struggling with in 2013
A. Emotion management. B. Interpersonal relationship.
C. Work-life balance. D. Alcohol addiction.
25. What led to Deegan’s decision to start a baking business
A. Receiving encouragement from friends. B. Seeing people running to get cookies.
C. Working previously in the baking industry. D. Wanting desperately to gain total control.
26. What makes Deegan’s hiring approach unique
A. She values employees who love baking.
B. She offers training to inexperienced workers.
C. She hires people eager to work despite their past.
D. She prioritizes creativity over qualifications.
27. What can be a suitable title for this text
A. Overcoming Addiction: A New Beginning of Life
B. From Struggle to Success: A Story of Rebuilding Life

Cristina Mittermeier, a pioneering (开创性的) photographer, cares about nature and wants to protect it. Her lens inspires action and offers hope.
Mittermeier’s love for nature began early. This love led her to study marine biology, a field she focused on with the dream of studying whales at first. But soon she saw the damaging effects of industrial fishing, which caused a change in her career. “What I wanted to do was try my best to call on the whole world to understand how easily the oceans can be destroyed.” she explained. Science, while necessary, felt not enough to influence a larger population. Photography became her chosen tool.
She has invented her work a form of “visual medicine”, balancing the seriousness of environmental problems with a call to action. Her ideas for helping nature are practical and include listening to what local people know and how they live with the environment.
Mittermeier’s latest book Hope shows her efforts in environmental protection. By working with people from all over the world to create the book, she turned it into a group effort instead of just her own. The book’s 130 photographs, covering twenty years, are displayed not by geography or creatures, but by themes that tell the story of life on our planet.
Through her work, Mittermeier continually attaches importance to the role of youth in reshaping the planet’s future, Visual storytelling, she argues, is likely to encourage young people to take action quickly — not through fear but by directing attention to finding means of solving problems and celebrating victories, however small.
Cristina Mittermeier’s life shows the great power of art with a purpose. Her lens catches not just what is but what could be, urging us all to act toward a future where people and nature can live peacefully.
28. What caused a change in Mittermeier’s career
A. Her interest in nature. B. Her love for photography.
C. The power of science. D. The alarming scene of industrial fishing.

C. It is created through shared efforts. D. It is a story book for children.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Cristina Mittermeier: Photography Inspires Action
B. Cristina Mittermeier: Dreams Come True
C. Environmental Protection: Ocean Has Artistic Beauty

There is already much evidence that volunteering benefits adults’ physical and mental health. Now, scientists have found similar links to both physical and mental health in adolescents.
A 2023 analysis found that among more than 50,000 adolescents in the National Survey of Children’s Health, young people who had participated in community service or had volunteered over the previous 12 months were more likely to be in good health and stayed calm and in control when faced with challenges, and the adolescents were less likely to be anxious.
Admittedly, those findings are only correlations (相关性). “It could be that the children who were volunteering were already in great health,” says study co-leader Kevin Lanza. But because of an alarming rise in mental health issues among young people, he believes that the early findings are promising enough to dig into. A 2021 report warned that the percentage of young people suffering from constant sadness or hopelessness had increased by 40 percent over the previous decade.
When looking for ways to address it, researchers point to the role of “contribution” - providing support or resources to others or helping to achieve a shared goal - as an important piece of social and emotional development for adolescents. Young people have a developmental need to connect and belong. “Part of the exploration of adolescence and young adulthood is figuring out where you can be needed and useful - arguably key aspects of our mental health,” says developmental psychologist Andrew Fuligni.
Volunteering is one good way young people can contribute. The importance of mattering to others and to the larger world translates really well to the needs of adolescents to have a meaningful role to play in their community.
However, there may be a potential disadvantage of volunteering. Scientists have found that young people’s mental health can suffer if they feel their contributions are thought lowly of because of their sex, racial or ethnic identity or they are forced to participate. Thus, adults can help by offering choices and by vetting (审查) volunteer opportunities to be sure that organizations are well run and equipped to offer a good experience.
32. What does Lanza think about the findings in 2023
A. They are valuable and worth further exploration.
B. They discover teenagers face more mental health issues.
C. They show volunteering increases adults’ overall well-being.
D. They prove the willingness to volunteer determines children’s health.
33. How does “contribution” in paragraph 4 address adolescents’ mental problems
A. By curing them of the mental problems.
B. By helping them gain praise and support.
C. By enabling them to find a sense of purpose.
D. By meeting the need of more volunteers now.
34. Who may suffer from volunteering according to the text
A. John, a disabled boy who did community service work.
B. Taylor, a black girl who was praised for helping others.
C. Tom, a kind child who helped in a school as a volunteer.
D. Jessica, a high school student who hesitated to volunteer.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. The importance of doing voluntary working.
B. The approach to volunteering by contributing.
C. The seriousness of adolescents’ mental health issues.
D. The impact of volunteering on adolescents’ mental health.

Automation(自动化) is increasingly affecting many fields, causing debates like “Are Robots Coming for Your Job ” While many believe that creativity and artistic taste remain unique to human beings, advances in artificial intelligence(AI) challenge this idea.
For example, at Rutgers University’s Art and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, AI has been developed to produce beautiful, original paintings. Similarly, Amper Music offers AI-driven music creation services. Users can choose the instruments, speed, and length of the piece, and the software produces an original piece that is also “performed” and “mixed” by AI.
Amper’s software is great at creating background music suitable for reality TV shows, online videos, and student films. It focuses on the market for ready-made music. These Al-created art and music are polished and attractive, but they raise important questions: What is the value of art when it can be produced in large quantities without human effort
Consider the Mona Lisa: its value comes partly from its scarcity — there is only one original. In contrast, Amper can create a new high-quality music piece every time you click, and Elgammal’s AI painter can produce thousands of unique artworks rapidly. This situation creates a mixed world where art remains unique yet easily produced. It makes us wonder whether people should pay for such works and what their prices should be.
This issue is real, not imaginary. Spotify recently attracted AI researcher Francois Pachet, who used to work at Sony, to develop tools for human composers(作曲家). However, there have been reports that Spotify’s playlists included music from artists who don't actually exist, possibly allowing Spotify to avoid paying royalties (版税). While Spotify says the tracks were created by real people using fake names, there are still worries about whether AI could be used to produce free music, which could harm human musicians.
As machines and technology start to replace many jobs, even creative fields like art and music are affected. This raises questions about the need for rules or groups to protect artists and whether society will continue to value human-made art more than machine-made creations. Ultimately, we must consider the effects of AI in art and music—who should get recognition when an AI-created piece wins awards like the Grammys
36. What challenges the idea that creativity and artistic taste are unique to human beings
A. Robots doing physical tasks. B. AI making progress.
C. Robots learning to debate. D. AI knowing painting.
37. What does the underlined word "scarcity" in paragraph 4 mean
A Having high quality. B. Being extremely hard to get.
C. Having natural beauty. D. Being impossible to copy
38. What does Francois Pachet do at Spotify
A. Creating playlists. B. Producing free music.
C. Paying royalties. D. Creating tools to help musicians.
39. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Confidence of humans' artistic ability B. Ways to promote AI-created art.
C. Concerns about using AI in creative fields. D. The need for AI with human feelings.

Aiming to explore the history and appreciate cultural treasures, an event with the theme of Amazing Cultural Heritage was successfully held in our school last Saturday.
The event commenced with a lecture by a distinguished expert, who introduced some renowned cultural sites and stressed the significance of the preservation. What followed was an exhibition showcasing some artifacts brought by the students which had been passed down through their families, along with the typical photos that allowed students to dig into more about Chinese civilization. The highlight of the event was the art workshops, where our students immersed themselves in making traditional handicrafts, such as paper-cutting and pottery.

M: OK, welcome to Fast&Furious Mini Cars! I know you guys know how to drive cars out on the streets, but that doesn’t mean we can automatically trust you to handle these smaller vehicles on this indoor racetrack. So, before we get started, I just want to go over some ground rules.
Number 1: you must wear your helmet and seat belt at all times. Anyone who is found breaking this rule will be asked to leave the racetrack and will not receive a refund of their deposit.
Number 2: please drive safely. This means no bumping into other cars on purpose, and be aware that drivers who are judged to be driving too aggressively will be given a warning before being asked to leave.
Number 3: there is absolutely no eating, drinking, or smoking in the vehicles. There is a restaurant where drivers can relax between races, but nothing except the driver should be in the mini cars.
Finally, please make sure you are familiar with all the safety features of the vehicles before the first race starts. These include the door locks, the emergency braking system, and the emergency lights. If there is an accident out on the track, you’ll need to be able to use these features as quickly and safely as possible. You’ve all signed your insurance forms already, so if there are no other questions, pick out your helmets and let’s get out to the track and check out the cars!
