Weald & Downland Living Museum
Fun fact
Over 50 historic buildings from across the Weald and Downland area have been dismantled (拆除) and then reconstructed across a lovely 40-acre site in the south downs national park.
The collection of buildings represents almost a thousand years of rural life in south-east England: furnished just as they would have been in the past-complete with the homes, farms and public buildings. There’s a sense of exploring a real village as you wander between them along green paths, stopping to climb the stairs of a 17th-century craftsman’s (工匠) cottage to lie on the straw bed or sheltering from a shower in a smoky, 14th-century hall.
Getting there
The Stagecoach 60 bus service from Chichester to Midhurst stops just five minutes away at Grooms Yard, Singleton. The nearest railway stations are Chichester (2 miles) and Haslemere (7 miles). The museum is on Town Lane in Singleton, reached via the A286 from Chichester to Midhurst. Parking is free and there are disabled parking spaces opposite the museum shop.
Value for money
Yes. It’s not cheap but it’s a special experience that easily fills a day. Plus it’s a valuable cause worth supporting. Adults 14, children 5—17 and students 6.50, under-4s free, family 38 (two adults and two children) or 25 (one adult and three children).
Opening hours
Daily 10 a.m.—5 p.m. (last entry 4 p.m.).

Most people would tremble at the idea of getting caught up in a 73.5-foot wave. But for Brazilian pro-surfer Maya, it presented the perfect opportunity to break her 2018 world record for the largest wave surfed by a female. The athlete skillfully maneuvered (操控) the massive wave at the World Surf League (WSL) Nazare Tow Surfing Challenge in Praia do Norte, Portugal, where she established her first world record by riding a 68-foot wave.
“When I let go of the rope, I had a feeling it could be the one but wasn’t sure. The speed was very high, but the noise that the wave made when it broke made me realize that this was probably the biggest wave I’d ever ridden.
Her record, earning her WSL’s 2020 women’s Biggest Wave Award, was two feet higher than Dupont’s wave, who had ridden the largest wave. It was also 3.5 feet higher than the 70-foot wave ridden by the 2020 men’s Biggest Wave Award winner Kai Lenny!
“Our sport is very male-dominated, with the performances on the male side being often much stronger than ours as females,” she said. “This year, a woman did surf the biggest, tallest wave of the year. It opens the idea that in other categories and other areas of surfing, this could be accomplished, too.”
Though Maya, who has been surfing competitively since she was 15, seemed to effortlessly move over the monster surf, it has not all been smooth sailing. Her first attempt at pursuing the world’s biggest wave in Nazare, Portugal, in 2013 could have ended her career. The surfer suffered a disastrous wipeout that broke her ankle and almost caused her to drown. However, it did not reduce her determination to create her record as one of the world’s greatest surfers!

D.It indicated the domination of males.
31.What led to Maya’s achievement
A.Her strong will. B.Her talent.

Mom and I were putting the finishing touches on dinner, and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table. Instead of going to the dish cabinet, she went into the pantry where there was a stack of old, mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.
When she had set all six places, she stood back and sighed, "Oh, Grandma, your plates are so beautiful. Ours are all alike!" We had a good laugh at her innocent remark, but as I think back to all those years ago, I believe she was right. Those plates were beautiful.
Mom worked for the local council on aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the little things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients got Meals on Wheels, a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to-go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil, and then deliver them to the people who she knew didn't get enough to eat.
This was about ten years before microwave ovens became common so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven. Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad, Mom's clients dined on Beef Manhattans, pan-fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake. Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job, and Mom continued after Dad's death until all her former clients had either passed away or moved out.
When I was cleaning our Mom's house after her death, I kept one as a souvenir. That plate is a sweet reminder of the lessons of generosity and caring for one's neighbor that were modeled for me by my parents.
32.Why did the author think those plates beautiful
A.They were not all alike. B.They were little Jessica's pride.
C.They were collected from different places. D.They were symbols of the parents' kindness.
33.What did the author's mother do to earn a living in the 1970s
A.Be a housewife. B.Run Meals on Wheels.
C.Deliver food to houses. D.Do housework for the old.
34.Why did the author's mother make to-go meals
A.It was her job. B.She was good at cooking.
C.She wanted to help beyond her duty. D.Her family didn't have enough to eat.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Mother’s plates of Sympathy B.My Precious Souvenir
C.Services for the Senior D.A Kind-hearted Mother

When to Say “No” to Antibiotics (抗生素)
Although they know that antibiotics kill only bacteria but not viruses and the obvious risk of antibiotic overuse to personal health, many doctors still use antibiotics when the drugs are not necessary. 36 In some serious cases, the patients with them failed to respond to any medical treatment and died within days. Therefore, several medical organizations have tried to correct antibiotic misuse by explaining when the drugs are not needed.
Ear Diseases
Earaches account for over half of ear related diseases for children. Most earaches gradually heal with no antibiotic in days, especially in children two and older. 37 In severe cases or when children under two years old experience moderate to severe pain, antibiotics might be required.
Eye Diseases
Doctors often use antibiotic eye drops after treating related diseases. Macular Degeneration, for example, is an eye disease generally treated with injections or laser operation. But those drops are rarely needed after such procedures and can even damage patients’ eyes.
Lung Diseases
For older patients, particularly those who live in long-term care centers, doctors need to use antibiotics when a routine test finds bacteria in lung. 38
Throat Diseases
39 Therefore, antibiotics shouldn’t be widely used in treatments for such diseases. Only less than one third of strep throats are bacterial. If you suspect bacterial throat, get tested to find out for sure.
Another report, conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also indicates that antibiotic misuse affects at least two million people annually, killing more than 23,000. 40 Therefore, health experts urge all doctors in practice to follow the above instructions.
A.Most throat diseases are caused by viruses.
B.Just wait two days to see if symptoms disappear.
C.But if the result proves normal, the drugs won’t help.
D.In this case, antibiotics are the most effective for the old.
E.Most doctors already know it, so they say no to antibiotics.
F.Under such circumstances, limiting antibiotic misuse is a must.
G.This may develop the “superbugs”, which can’t be easily controlled.

“Happy birthday, dear Rhea, happy birthday to you!” Silence penetrated (穿透) the room.
“Make a wish," my mom said in a sweet whisper. Now, I’m a straight A student, confident and popular, but that’s not what I was a year ago. It was my mom’s love that made me what I am today. Looking around the room filled with my friends, I couldn't help but smile.
I wish...
Memories flooded back. The December morning breeze brushed my long, black hair as I stepped towards the doors of Hagenberg High. It was my first day of school. Only two weeks ago, my mom and I migrated to America, hoping for a bright new life.
My English was poor, and I was alone, like a lost little kid. I unknowingly avoided interacting with anyone because I was afraid they’d laugh in my face. When my English was better, I decided, I would come up to people and maybe manage to say, “Whussup ”
Finally in gym class, a friendly brown face. She almost looked like me, only happier .Her name was Caroline. At lunchtime we found ourselves enjoying the cafeteria food. She wanted me to meet her friends. “Don’t worry Rhea,” she assured me, calling me “sister”, “You’ll fit right in.”
And I did. It was as if some foreign soul entered my body and made me do things against my will. I found myself drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and skipping school. I didn't even like the taste of beer. The moment it touched my tongue I felt like I had to spit it back. But I didn't. I couldn’t afford to look bad and lose my new “friends”. I began to miss at least one day of school a week to hang out with them. Then I missed two, three, even four days in a row.
But while I was out having fun with my “friends,” inside I was full of conflict, unhappiness and regret. I stopped practicing my English sentences in front of the mirror and instead practiced, “I don’t know why the school called, mom. There must be something wrong in the system because I did not miss school today.”

66.Sports keep me fit
As a sports enthusiast, I consider it crucial to engage in physical activities to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Personally, I enjoy a variety of sports to keep myself fit and active.
My favorite way to work out is through regular jogging. Not only does it help me improve my endurance but also it allows me to enjoy the beauty of nature. Besides, I also participate in team sports, through which I can enhance team work skills.
My advice to those who want to stay fit is to find an activity that they genuinely enjoy. Then, set achievable goals and make it a habit to exercise regularly. Last, remember to warm up before any workout and cool down afterwards.
Let’s lace up our sneakers and embrace the world of sports for a fit and fulfilling school life together!
67.One day the school teacher called my mom and the truth came out. Mom thanked the teacher for telling her the truth about what happened. Mom and I had a long, calm talk. Mom said she understood my predicament. However, she told me that wanting to fit in and be popular doesn’t mean going out drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and missing school with your so-called friends. A person’s charm comes from one’s own knowledge. My mom believed that I would be an excellent good girl. She told me that always thinking would enable me to find a way out and there were more solutions than difficulties. Later, I broke with my former friends and put all my energy and time into my studies. I finally got excellent grades and was recognized by teachers, parents and friends.
My mom’s voice awakened me from my thoughts, “Have you made your birthday wish yet, sweetie ” “Yes, Mom.” I said. I continued, “I thank my teacher very much for telling you the truth about my performance. Thank you very much for pulling me back when I was confused and degenerated. It was you who gave me hope, support, love and confidence that made me where I am today. I will work harder and do my best in the future. I wish my teachers, parents and friends all health and happiness.”
