Adams Cassinga has had many identities: refugee (难民), journalist, mining consultant. And now, defender of wildlife.
As a child, he was fascinated by animals — gorillas living in the forests outside his hometown of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) — but his path to conservation was winding. His father, who feared Adams would be taken as a child soldier, sent him to South Africa. In Johannesburg, Adams learnt to survive on the streets while teaching himself English in public libraries. After he was granted official refugee status, he studied journalism and landed his first job working for a local newspaper. While working as an investigative reporter in 2006, Adams was shot three times! Adams changed career paths again, this time to work in the profitable mining industry in South Africa. In this role, he returned years later to the DRC to visit gold mines.
One day, while flying to a gold mine in northeastern Congo, Adams saw the wounds of mining operations on the lush forest landscape. He began to think about the beauty of his country’s wild places and the struggle to protect them. After volunteering as an honorary ranger (护林人), Adams took his wildlife mission one big step further, founding Conserv Congo in 2017. Conserv Congo fights illegal hunting and trafficking (非法交易) through undercover investigations in pursuit of criminals in the illegal wildlife trade. With a team of volunteers including police officers, politicians and students, Adams steals into trafficking networks and conducts organized traps with the authorities.
Adams places great value in winning over the hearts and minds of the police officers he works with. “They need to understand the reason behind what we do. We have to transform them into nature lovers. They can only protect what they know and love, ”he says. It also partners with multiple national parks, helping to prevent illegal hunting, training volunteers to patrol the parks with rangers, and buying uniforms and other supplies for rangers. To date, the non-profit has worked on more than 6,000 criminal cases, rescued hundreds of trafficked animals from chimps to parrots, and seized tons of ivory and pangolin scales.
24. What did Adams go through when he arrived in South Africa
A. Civil war. B. Culture shock.
C. Language barrier. D. Regional discrimination.
25. What motivated Adams to start out on the path of conservation
A. The beautiful scenery of the forest. B. The deep affection for wild animals.
C. The gold mine in northeastern Congo. D. The forest destruction caused by mining.
26. What is Adams trying to achieve in partnership with the police officers
A. A uniform rule for national parks. B. A comprehensive supply for rangers.
C. A scientific system of training volunteers. D. A transformation in attitude towards nature.
27 Which words can best describe Adams
A. Rigid and reserved. B. Active and committed.
C. Adaptable and humorous. D. Humble and diligent.
C
The fast autonomous logging machine advanced down a Swedish forest path and scanned for piled logs to transport. It then lifted them up and loaded them onto its trailer. A new study of the truck-size robot suggests it could help forest workers with at least some deadly jobs.
“It’s the first trial for us to see that the machine we built is perhaps capable of doing what we were dreaming it could do,” says Pedro La Hera, a roboticist and lead author of the study. Traditional logging jobs are often requiring operators to multitask and bear nearly constant vibration (振动) while operating logging vehicles. Tired foresters don’t always pay attention to other plants in the area, thus damaging the ecosystems around them. Logging is also dangerous; in the U. S., it has one of the highest death rates of any industry.
Roboticists, software engineers and forestry scholars in Sweden set out to automate some logging tasks. They used GPS to set a path in a clear-cut area and equipped the vehicle with a computer vision system to help it identify, pick up and release cut logs. The predetermined task sequence (序列) demonstrates how, in a controlled environment, a machine with little to no human oversight could operate.
“We have problems getting help working in the woods,” says Thomas Douglass, a logger in Guilford, Maine, “So it’s definitely an advancement.”
For now these vehicles’ use may be limited to Sweden, where nearly all paths in forests are well identified, and satellites provide information on logged areas. Loggers in the U. S., in contrast, harvest trees both in plantations and in natural stands where self-piloted machinery would face more challenges.
Still, the research highlights aspects of autonomous machinery that are worth developing further, says Dalia Abbas, a forester who has investigated the effects of logging operations in environmentally sensitive areas. Eventually, Abbas says, she “would definitely hope that it takes into account the fuller range of where it’s operating, whether it carries wildlife, other contaminants (污染物) or insects that come with the logs to avoid any harm, and its sensitivity to the terrain (地形).”
28. Which of the following best describes the traditional logging jobs
A. Demanding and risky. B. Tiring but rewarding.
C. Profitable but dangerous. D. Promising and creative.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Where the logging machinery works best.
B. What challenges the logging machinery faces.
C. How the logging machinery achieves automation.
D. Why GPS technology is used in the logging process.
30. Why is the use of automated logging vehicles restricted to Sweden
A. Its loggers are well equipped. B. Its forests are fully monitored.
C. Its roads are specially designed. D. Its logged areas are easily accessible.
31 What is a future consideration for developing the logging machine
A. Its capacity of loading logs. B. Its impact on the ecosystem.
C. The replacement of human labor. D. The convenience of its operation.
D
Do you ever find yourself repeating a specific word in your head over and over until the word suddenly makes no sense to you and you wonder why it’s a word at all This is just one of the many odd things our brains do to us, and it’s a pretty funny experience when it happens.
This phenomenon is known as semantic satiation (语义饱和) and it causes us to perceive a real word as meaningless sounds. Sometimes that loss of meaning can be a pain, sometimes it can be useful, and sometimes, it can even be unforgettably beautiful.
Semantic satiation occurs when a word is repeated over and over again until the word begins to lose its meaning to the listener. The term was first coined in 1962 but research surrounding the phenomenon dates from the early 20th century. There are multiple theories as to why semantic satiation occurs. One is that the repeated use of a neural pathway associated with a word impacts response times, leading to the loss of meaning. Another theory is that tiredness causes the connection between word and meaning to get disordered.
More recently, researchers have used neural networking simulations (模拟) to try to identify why the phenomenon happens and another set of researchers have found that semantic satiation delays facial expression processing. In other words, there isn’t an agreement as to why semantic satiation happens.
Studies looking at semantic satiation have typically involved the repetition of a word up to 30 times, with semantic satiation, in some cases, appearing after seven to nine repetitions. Some words used during these studies have been as short as four letters, but others have been much longer.
Sometimes, losing the meaning of a word can actually be helpful. Judy Ravin of Accents International uses semantic satiation to help English language learners focus more on how your muscles need to move in order to make the sounds required, rather than the meaning of a particular word. “A word in itself doesn’t actually have meaning. A word is a symbol for something, so, when we can move away from the meaning and just think about sound production, the physiology, it’s helpful.”
32. What can we learn from semantic satiation
A. It has its origin from money. B. It is most likely to be painful.
C. It arises as a word is repeated enough times. D. It’s one of the few tricks our brain plays on us.
33. What does the word “coined” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Created. B. Saved. C. Earned. D. Collected.
34. How does Judy Ravin help English learners
A. By strengthening muscles physically.
B. By emphasizing learning words basically.
C. By combining the meaning and sound organically.
D. By concentrating on pronouncing words physiologically.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Who are suffering from semantic satiation.
B. What kind of semantic satiation is beneficial.
C. Why semantic satiation makes a word meaningless.
D. How semantic satiation influences our facial expression.

Wilma never expected to become an excellent runner, especially after a disease weakened her left leg and foot when she was five. The condition made it difficult for her to walk and play, forcing her to stay home while her peers enjoyed nursery and primary school. Whenever the other kids were having fun outside, she felt deeply sorry for herself.
While doctors treated her weak leg and she learned how to walk again, her parents home-schooled her. Local teachers often came by to give her picture books to read. One of her favorites was See Dick Run, and she often wondered if she would ever run like Dick.
Every Monday, Wilma and her mum took a bus to the hospital, where the doctors and nurses gave Wilma exercises to strengthen her muscles. The exercises were physically demanding and pushed Wilma to her limits, leaving her exhausted and in pain. The frustration built up inside her as she struggled to complete each exercise while the other kids of her age were playing freely outside. She couldn’t understand why this was her reality, and the pain of her exercises made her feel even more isolated.
Fortunately, this hard work finally paid off. When Wilma was eight, she was strong enough to be fitted with a metal brace (支架) that supported her left leg. Using this, Wilma could finally walk by herself and go to school with other kids. All were happy about this progress except Wilma. Actually, Wilma hated wearing it. The brace was uncomfortable, and she had to wear it with heavy shoes that made her stand out.
“What will the other kids say ” she shouted to her mum. “I don’t want to look different!”
Her mum felt worried but still tried to cheer her up. “You won’t have to wear it forever, dear. Just keep exercising and make your leg stronger!” The word“exercising” built a larger fire in Wilma. It was a term that had become synonymous with (等同于……的) pain and struggle. She had had enough of exercising! Wilma went into her room and slammed (砰地关上) the door.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With clouds on her face, Wilma sat down at her table, her eyes falling on the book See Dick Run.

【答案】Hello, everyone. It is an honor to represent our group in summarizing our discussion. Our group strongly supports the use of translation pens in English learning. We believe that this device offers several advantages that can significantly enhance the learning experience.
Firstly, translation pens are incredibly portable and convenient to use. They can be carried anywhere, allowing learners to access translations instantly. Secondly, by offering immediate feedback, translation pens can improve learning efficiency, which is particularly beneficial to beginners. Additionally, they can also be of great help in practicing reading and writing skills by providing real-time translation support.
In conclusion, when used as a supplementary tool to support, rather than replace active language practice, with the portability and real-time translation capabilities, translation pens are a valuable tool for English learners.
