Curiosity, grief, and love drove the authors of these passionate tales of exploration and discovery to conduct research, start epic journeys, and share social criticism and stories of wonder, humor, beauty, and adventure.
Stranger in the Desert: A Family Story. By Jordan Salama. 2024. Catapult.
Salama’s paternal grandparents came to New York from Argentina while his mother’s family emigrated from Iraq. When he came across a family history recording forced migrations through Syria to Argentina and his great-grandfather’s life as a traveling salesman, he decided to retrace his ancestor’s route through the Andes Mountains.
Subpar Planet: The World’s Most Celebrated Landmarks and Their Most Disappointed Visitors. By Amber Share. 2024. Plume.
Funny, insightful, and lively, Share’s descriptions of renowned travel destinations make fun of travel writing and travelers. She pairs well-researched descriptions of popular sites, such as Peru’s Machu Picchu and Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro, with critical reviews from unimpressed tourists. In this way she shows a sharp contrast between people’s absurd expectations and the true wonders of the world’s cultural and natural treasures.
The World Walk: 7 Years. 28, 000 Miles. 6 Continents. A Grand Reflection, One Step at aTime. By Tom Turcich. 2024. Skyhorse.
Turcich was overwhelmingly absorbed in death, especially after the tragic losses of two high-school friends. At 26, he decided to embark on a walking tour around the world, leaving New Jersey and heading, initially, to Panama City. He would be challenged by physical suffering and COVID-19 lockdowns, but he and his dog, Savannah, would not be discouraged.
21. What makes some visitors disappointed at the world’s most celebrated landmarks
A. Ridiculous expectations. B. Lack of research.
C. Misleading travel writing. D. Unattractive travel destinations.
22 What got Tom Turcich to start his world walk
A. His absorption in reflection. B. Discouragement from his family.
C. The death of two high-school friends. D. A desire to challenge his physical ability.
23. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A textbook for teenagers. B. An introduction of travel books.
C. A collection of fairy tales. D. A report about scientific discoveries.

When my daughter Adina was born, I was convinced she’d be a cyclist. A cyclist’s daughter has to love bikes, right I looked forward to riding together with her and investing all the time needed to teach her. In return, I expected progress — not immediately huge steps, but at least some. But in our case, progress just didn’t come.
When Adina was a year and a half, a friend gave me a child seat, allowing her to sit in front and enjoy the ride far more than kids sitting behind their parents. Together, we enjoyed long rides. “Bi-ke! ” she’d shout every time I started putting on my cycling gear, immediately running for her helmet.
The next logical step was a balance bike, which teaches kids to steer and maintain balance. I started bringing the balance bike along on our walks, offering it to her whenever the conditions or her mood seemed just right. But to be honest, she was more interested in stones on the path or butterflies flying by. I didn’t mind; I enjoyed the walks with her, but progress on the bike was non-existent.
While other kids sped past us on their balance bikes, Adina remained disinterested. When she was three and a half, she got a bike with training wheels. Adina loved it! She eagerly packed Ariel the mermaid and a pony into her basket but insisted on wearing a flowery dress instead of sporty clothes. “We’re going for a picnic! ” she cheered.
It soon became clear that she lacked the fundamentals she should have learned on the balance bike. Her attention often wandered, and any slight downhill made her nervous. I comforted her each time and when she wanted to stop, I carried the bike on my shoulder, and we went for ice cream instead.
Slowly, Adina learned how to pedal and managed to ride loops around the colorful concrete track in the park. I’ll stick to my strategy of not pushing or forcing it; I still believe that every child learns to ride a bike eventually — it’s just a matter of timing.
24. What was the author’s expectation when Adina was born
A. She would prefer walking to cycling.
B. She would have a passion for cycling.
C. She would make huge progress in cycling.
D. She would favor other physical activities besides cycling.
25. How did Adina feel when taken to cycle in her child seat
A. Nervous. B. Hesitant. C. Confused. D. Thrilled.
26. What might have blocked Adina’s progress in cycling
A. Severe cycling conditions. B. Lack of interest in cycling.
C. Pressure from other cyclists. D. Unprofessional teaching methods.
27. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Patient and optimistic. B. Modest and persistent.
C. Thoughtful and ambitious. D. Honest and supportive.
C
Among the products of dog by Dr Lisa, an Australian pet-care brand, you will find a cleanser for sensitive skin, a soothing balm and a cologne. All are free of genetically modified ingredients. Still, dogs desiring meat need not eat like animals: Butternut Box, a maker of fresh pet food taste-tested by humans can offer your furry friend a low-fat chicken dish with peas and lentils. It is the most popular meal it offers.
There is little, it seems, that people won’t do for their pets. Americans spent $186bn on them last year, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, covering everything from food and vet visits to toys and hair cleaning. That is more than they spent on childcare. Catering to pets has become big business. Mars, a company best known for its chocolate bars, made two thirds of its income last year from pet-care. Nestlé and Colgate, two other consumer-product giants, also make around a fifth of their income from their pet divisions.
Spending on pets rocketed through the COVID-19 pandemic, as lonely people adopted animals and then spent money on them. But animals were not easy to drop once lockdowns ended. Analysts think the pet business will soon experience a boost, rising to around $260bn by2030. Behind that is a shift in the relationship between pets and humans. Owners increasingly see themselves as parents, not masters. They really see them as part of their families. “Pets have gone from the backyard to the living room to the bedroom,” says Lo c Moutault, head of the pet division at Mars.
Dogs, cats and other animals lucky enough to be welcomed into such families are in for a treat. Younger owners might take their pets to the vet more often, to the animals’ disappointment, but they make up for it by giving them more presents. The average cost of those gifts was $44.
All this is attracting plenty of newcomers to the pet industry. Earlier this month Gilles Andrier, the boss of Givaudan, a Swiss company that is the world’s largest manufacturer of flavors and fragrances, said his firm is eyeing the pet-food market. “People spend more money on pets than kids nowadays,” he explained. Best, then, to have a dog in the fight.
28. What can we infer from paragraph 1
A. Pet products are in great demand.
B. People are quite caring to their pets.
C. People care more about the weight of their pets.
D. Pet products include genetically modified ingredients.
29. What does the author want to show by mentioning Nestlé and Colgate
A. Serving pets is a profitable industry. B. People will do whatever for their pets.
C. Products of pets are plentiful and fresh. D. The consumer-product industry is declining.
30. What drives the boost of pet industry according to paragraph 3
A. The ownership of pets. B. The training of pets.
C. The family status of pets. D. The living space of pets.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The human-pet bond has shifted. B. Pet-keeping is making a comeback.
C. The spending on pets tops that on kids. D. People are spending more on their pets.
D
Animals hibernate (冬眠) to conserve energy during cold weather or when food becomes scarce, slowing their heart rate and dropping their body temperature to as low as 5℃. This is only survivable if their blood continues to flow efficiently and supply oxygen to the body.
We already know that red blood cells change shape to fit different pressures and blood vessel sizes. To investigate if something like this happens in the cells of hibernating animals to keep blood flowing, Gerald Kerth at the University of Greifswald in Germany and his colleagues turned to bats. They analyzed hundreds of thousands of red blood cells from common noctule bats, which hibernate and Egyptian fruit bats, which don’t, along with cells from people.
The researchers found that for all three species, red blood cells became less flexible and stickier as temperatures dropped from 37℃ to 23℃. But when they cooled the cells even further to 10℃, the bat cells continued this metamorphosis, whereas the human cells did not.
Indeed, the bat cells — even those of non-hibernating bats, which probably maintained the evolutionary capacity — continued to become thick, stiff and functional even at very low temperatures. This might be slowing down the cells as they pass through the tiny vessels in the muscles and lungs, making them highly efficient at exchanging gases, like oxygen, throughout the body.
“It is like how when you take your time at the supermarket instead of being rushed, you can really fill up your basket,” says Kerth. Exactly how this structural change happens is still unclear, but the team guesses that the mechanical properties of the bat red blood cell membranes (细胞膜) play a key role.
The findings suggest that drugs could one day include human red blood cell membranes to imitate the way bat membranes react to the cold, says Kerth. In the more distant future, hibernation could also allow for efficient long-distance space travel, requiring minimal food and other resources while preserving mental health during the journey. “There are benefits of putting humans at low temperature during space flight,” says Kerth.
32. What did Gerald Kerth’s study focus on
A. Blood flow. B. Blood vessel sizes.
C. Red blood cells. D. Different pressures.
33. What does the underlined word “metamorphosis” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Change. B. Growth. C. Damage. D. Movement.
34. Why does Kerth mention shopping at a supermarket
A. To prove the evolutionary capacity of bats. B. To show the role of red blood cell membranes.
C. To indicate how the structural change happens. D. To illustrate the efficiency of exchanging gases.
35. How will hibernation help long-space travel
A. By offering astronauts resources. B. By speeding up astronauts’ travel.
C. By reducing resource consumption. D. By maintaining astronauts’ overall health.

Energy drinks have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among students and young professionals who often feel the need for an extra boost to get through their busy days. Various forms have been around since at least 1900. And they really began to gain in popularity in the 1960s, primarily in Japan and other Asian countries. ___36___ Most energy drinks are marketed to young people, with advertising campaigns which focus on this age group.
The contents of energy drinks vary. One of the main attractions of energy drinks is their ability to provide a quick burst of energy. This is largely due to their high caffeine content, which stimulates the nervous system and increases alertness. ___37___ Commonly, herbal ingredients are marketed as being unusual, and some companies suggest that the herbs can make people more intelligent as well as more watchful.
___38___ Studies have linked energy drink consumption to increased heart rate, blood pressure, and even heart problems in some individuals. For those with pre-existing heart conditions or taking certain medications, energy drinks may pose additional risks. Also, the lack of regulation in the energy drink industry means that the caffeine content listed on the label may not always be accurate.
Although they are called “energy drinks”, these beverages are not suitable for athletes. As energy drinks can cause the electrolyte (电解质) imbalance in the body, they can lead to serious health problems. These beverages are also sometimes mixed with alcohol, which can be a dangerous combination, leading to the drinkers’ possible errors in judgment. ___39___
Consuming an energy drink now and then is probably fine, as the beverages are not completely unhealthy. However, constant consumption is not recommended. ___40___ People who experience health problems after consuming energy drinks should avoid them and receive timely medical treatment.
A. They may include herbal ingredients as well.
B. Drinking energy drinks is considered to be cool.
C. You may experience heart trouble if you drink them.
D. Hence, drinks specifically made for sportsmen should be used.
E. By the mid-1990s, they had reached the United States and Europe.
F. Including energy drinks in your lifestyle comes with some risks, though.
G. It is unwise for long-term health management due to the high caffeine content.

In a small village at the edge of an ancient forest, where the trees whispered secrets older than time itself, stood the Heartwood tree, whose vast branches stretched toward the sky. The villagers believed that the Heartwood was more than just a tree — it was a living guardian, protecting them from harm and ensuring their prosperity. Every year, as the Harvest Festival approached, the village elder — Old Mara — would climb its towering trunk, offering a prayer to the forest gods in exchange for the blessings of a fruitful season.
However, Old Mara, once strong and dynamic, had grown frail with age. The climb, once effortless for her, had become a challenging task, and she could no longer make it. The Heartwood had become a symbol of stability, but without Old Mara carrying on the climb, the villagers felt their future was uncertain.
Among them was Jarek, a young man who had always admired Old Mara’s wisdom and the devotion she had shown to her role. He had watched her climb the tree every year, her face peaceful, as if she were one with the ancient tree and the land beneath it. Jarek had never imagined a time when she would not perform the task. Now, with the responsibility falling to him, Jarek found himself overwhelmed. He had always understood the significance of the climb, but he had never felt the weight of it so personally until now.
As the festival drew closer, the pressure increased. The villagers would ask Jarek if he was prepared. Their eyes — wide, earnest, and full of expectation — made his heart tighten. It was as though the very survival of the village rested on his shoulders. The climb was no longer just a tradition; it had become a symbol of the village’s endurance, of their trust in him. And the thought of failing them worried him. The night before the festival, Jarek couldn’t sleep, plagued by self-doubt.

【答案】Dear Charles,
I’m writing to share with you an outing I had last Friday.
Our school organized this trip to a nearby nature reserve. We set off early and spent the day walking through the forest, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The highlight of the outing was admiring the view from the hilltop. It was a perfect opportunity to relax and bond with my classmates.
Immersed in nature, I felt refreshed stepping away from schoolwork for a moment. It reminded me how important it is to slow down and appreciate the world around us.
I truly hope you can join us next time. I’d love to hear what you’ve been doing lately.
Yours,

【答案】参考范文
At dawn, he visited Old Mara. Greeting him with a gentle smile, she sensed the burden on Jarek. His heart was heavy, and it was apparent that he was not fully prepared. Old Mara patted his shoulder and said, “I believe you can do it. We trust you because you are the best. ” Motivated by the one he admired, Jarek understood that all he needed was determination. The village stood behind him. After expressing gratitude and waving goodbye to Old Mara, he made his way to the Heartwood.
Jarek neared the base of the tree. With countless eyes fixed on him, Jarek started to climb. His heart raced, but his mind was clear. When he finally reached the top, Jarek offered a prayer just as Old Mara had done. It was then that the villagers erupted into applause, their faces filled with relief and hope. The cheers rang in Jarek’s ears, but what struck him most was Old Mara’s approving look. Now he truly realized responsibility was more than shouldering a task — it was about trust and resolve.
