Most people aren’t familiar with where Lesotho is. When I was asked to go there as a teacher, I didn’t know either. Lesotho is a small, mountainous country surrounded by its larger neighbor, South Africa. Winters are so cold and dry that trees can only survive if they’re near a spring or river. So when I met Wilfred, who had many trees to plant on his way home, I had to see what he’d done.
My brother and I made the two-hour hike one winter morning. As we came around the mountain, we saw lots of trees. We continued on and reached Wilfred’s home in an area surrounded by a wonder: a garden with peach and pear trees.
I was amazed at what Wilfred had achieved, but he said most of the work was done by his father, Mr Pitso. I felt great admiration for Mr Pitso. He mentioned that he started planting peach trees 20 years earlier. At first, people were resentful, and several times others removed his trees because they felt it was unfair for him to have something they didn’t have.
To solve the problem, Mr Pitso gave his trees away freely to his neighbors. He also organized tree-planting days at the primary school where he worked and started a tree-buying cooperative to get funds from the government. He showed people how they could make tree-growing profitable by selling fruit and firewood. In times of drought, although he was in his sixties, he carried buckets of water from the small stream to his trees.
As we left, Mr Pitso told us that before he died, he hoped to see the barren (贫瘠的) valley around his home covered with trees. When faced with challenges in my life, I remember Mr Pitso’s dream. The poor primary school teacher living in the mountains of Lesotho gives me hope.
24. Why did the author decide to visit Wilfred’s home
A. To help Wilfred plant peach trees. B. To get some firewood for the winter.
C. To see Wilfred’s tree-planting efforts. D. To learn about Wilfred’s living conditions.
25. What does the underlined word “resentful” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Confused. B. Annoyed. C. Careless. D. Helpless.
26. Which of the following words best describe Mr Pitso
A. Caring and strong-willed. B. Demanding and high-spirited.
C. Creative and self-centered. D. Determined and good-humored.
27. What is the main purpose of the author in writing the text
A. To introduce the geography of Lesotho.
B. To explain the importance of tree-planting.
C. To discuss the challenges of teaching abroad.
D. To share a hopeful story about protecting nature.
C
Simply put, soul searching means the effort to find meaning and purpose in life. It is about uncovering the reason for our existence and filling our lives with purpose. Though not a medical or commonly used term in psychiatry(精神病学), soul searching represents a healthy form of self-reflection. From a psychological perspective, as explained by Natalie Rosado, the founder of Tampa Counseling Place, soul searching is a “deep introspective(内省的)process through which an individual tries to gain insight into their deep thoughts, emotions, values, and beliefs”.
People who take soul searching might do so to face unresolved conflicts, gain a better understanding of their identity, and deepen their connection with themselves and others. It plays a vital role in personal growth. By questioning established patterns and looking for change, one creates room for improvement.
Writing journals is a valuable way for soul searching. Writing about daily experiences, thoughts, and emotions can clarify one’s feelings and motivations, revealing patterns or conflicts that need attention. Additionally, writing journals is generally beneficial for mental health. A 2022 study showed that it reduced anxiety by 9%, PTSD(创伤后应激障碍)by 6%, and depression by 2%.
We know that soul searching can be challenging at times. “Soul searching can be tough, and that’s completely normal and okay,” Rosado says. It’s valid to feel that things are hard and that you’re not making much progress. Many people also end up feeling confused.
Rosado emphasizes the importance of being patient with oneself. “There is no changeless timeline for soul searching, and going at your own pace can help you move forward smoothly.” Rosado adds, “There are several ways to put soul searching into daily life, such as keeping a journal, taking long walks in nature, and undergoing treatment. It can also be a natural part of your routine,” Rosado suggests seeing this process as something natural rather than something forced, Being mindful of your values and true self naturally leads to personal growth.
28. What can we know about soul searching
A. It can be of different depths. B. It’s everywhere in our lives.
C. It’s about firm progress. D. It’s a medical concept.
29. How do people improve themselves by soul searching
A. By dealing with difficulties.
B. By building their identify.
C. By questioning existent patterns.
D. By interacting with others more.
30. Why is keeping a journal good for self-reflection
A. It develops a regular habit. B. It can clarify one’s feelings.
C. It records essential issues. D. It lowers the level of excitement.
31. What can be learned from what Rosado says in the last paragraph
A. Soul searching may consume patience.
B. Being close to nature is a part of lives.
C. Personal growth requires correct values.
D. There are ways to practice soul searching.
D
Human conversations are rapid-fire affairs, with mere milliseconds, one-thousandth of a second, passing between one person’s speech and their partner’s response. This speedy turn taking is universal across cultures — but now it turns out that chimps (黑猩猩) do it, too. By analyzing thousands of gestures from chimps in East Africa, researchers found that the animals take turns while communicating, and do so as quickly as we do.
Researchers sorted out hundreds of hours of footage from a large database of chimp gestural interactions. The researchers studied the footage, describing the movements each chimp made. They found the chimps responded to gestures with another gesture in their interactions. In one case, two chimps exchanged seven gestures in a row: Young male Daudi in Uganda had caught a small antelope, and young female Onyofi was requesting some of the meat. Every time she made a begging gesture, Daudi would respond by moving his arms and stamping his feet-gestures that mean“move away, go away”.
This turn taking was rapid and often overlapping, seeming to flow naturally like in human conversations. What’s more, it took chimps an average of just 120 milliseconds to respond to another chimp's gesture with their own, well within the 0-to 200-millisecond range common in human interactions.
“The work has important implications for the origins of human communication,” says Stephen Levinson, a linguist. Humans may have got turn-taking behavior from our last common ancestor with other great apes (类人猿). Finding one of those features-turn taking-in our close cousins suggests that even the earliest humans already had this ability.
However, some researchers say it’s too early to conclude that humans and chimps both got this ability from our ancestor. “Without looking at other species, we can’t make that claim. We don’t know if this is something special about chimps’ communication, or whether it’s been found there first ‘because we firstly think of chimps when we’re asking evolutionary (进化的) questions’,” an animal communication researcher said.
32. What is the common understanding of the turn taking
A. It refers to all kinds of communicating skills.
B. It generally exists among different cultures.
C. It is a factor that distinguishes people from animals.
D. It can be learned by chimps with people’s guideline.
33. Why does the author mention Daudi and Onyofi
A. To make a contrast. B. To make a comment. C. To explain a rule. D. To clarify a concept.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The scientists will do more research.
B. More chimps will be sent to be studied.
C. The researchers’ conclusion is fully recognized.
D. The study of evolution is closely related to chimps.
35. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Chimps study to take turn from humans
B. Chimps take turns while chatting just like humans
C. Chimps use their own words to chat with their partners
D. Chimps get the ability of taking turn from our ancestors

Anika pulled her wheeled suitcase behind her when following her parents through the airport. She looked all around her in the huge building that seemed to be filled with thousands of people. It was going to be her first time on an airplane. She was very excited, or rather just a little nervous. She hugged her favorite doll tight. That made her feel better.
She walked down the narrow aisle of the plane to find her seat with her parents. The tall flight attendant smiled at her and asked where they were going. “A world-famous entertainment resort,” Anika said with a smile.
“I think so,” replied the flight attendant. “Most of the families on this flight are headed that way.” She pointed to her name tag. “I'm Leanne. Let me know if you and your pretty doll friend need anything.”
“Thanks. I'm Anika, and this is Pansy,” said Anika, holding the doll up to show her. “Nice to meet you both,” replied Leanne. The flight was a few hours so she read a book with Pansy and did some puzzles her mother had packed for the trip. Soon she was getting a little tired and bored too.
Anika’s mom suggested she get some sleep, asking for a pillow and a blanket. Anika tucked Pansy under the blanket and fell asleep quickly. In no time, it seemed, she was being woken up again because it was time to land. They had arrived!
She wasn’t quite awake yet. Her mother and father were busy packing up. They picked up their bags and jackets, ready to leave the plane. Leanne walked past them, collecting the pillows and blankets from the passengers.
“Bye, maybe I will see you next week on your return flight home,” Leanne said and waved goodbye to Anika and the other passengers as they left the plane.
As Leanne shook out the blankets she had gathered from the seats, the flight attendant was surprised when a doll fell out onto the floor. She picked it up and recognized it as the doll young Anika had shown her.

How to Make New Friends
I’d like to share my experiences and suggestions on making new friends. Personally, I’ve always found that being open and approachable is key. I remember when I first moved to a new school, I was quite shy, but I made an effort to join clubs and engage in group activities, which allowed me to meet students with similar interests.
My advice for making new friends is to be genuinely interested in others. Ask questions and listen actively to their responses. This shows that you value their thoughts and opinions, which can help build a strong foundation for friendship. Additionally, be open to new experiences and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You never know who you might meet along the way.

【答案】
With duties to complete, she couldn’t run after the family and return it. Leanne felt a bit worried. She knew how much the doll meant to Anika. After finishing her tasks, she took the doll to the lost-and-found office at the airport. She carefully filled out a form, describing Anika and the details of the flight. She hoped that Anika would come to claim it. Every time she thought about the little girl’s disappointed face if she found out Pansy was missing, she felt a pang of guilt.
A week later, when she boarded the plane, Anika was surprised to see Leanne again. Anika’s eyes were red and swollen as she had been crying over the loss of Pansy. Leanne quickly walked over to her with a big smile and held out Pansy. “Is this what you’ve been looking for ” she asked. Anika's face lit up instantly. She hugged Leanne tightly and then grabbed Pansy, tears of joy streaming down her face. “Thank you so much! I was so sad without her,” Anika said. Leanne patted her head and said, “I knew you must be heartbroken. I’m glad I could return her to you.” And then, they started a pleasant conversation as the plane took off on its return journey.
