Tony Hawk, who I thought was bigger than life, came in the room and then the interview began.
As the world’s greatest skateboarder, he talked about how his life was not always so miraculous (奇迹般的). He
mentioned one day he was skating on top of the world, and the next day the sport of skateboarding fell right on its face.
Life for Tony has had its ups and downs, and what brought him back up was the way he believed in himself. One of the
most tragic events in Tony’s life was that his father passed away. Although he suffered such pain, he never lost sight of
his dream. He put his energy into his dream, which helped him overcome his sadness.
One part of Tony that completely impressed me is the way he accepts himself. His goal is never to do better than
others, but to do his best. If he does the best he can, it doesn’t matter how anyone else takes him. That’s true and wise.
As for me, I play baseball and things aren’t going so well, but I’m trying my hardest because that’s life. It’s how you
approach those bad days that will keep you on top.
Confidence brought Tony to the next level. During our meeting he continually talked about the importance of
following one’s dream. He also said, along with that, one needs to have a strong faith in one’s own ability to achieve that
dream, no matter what challenges are presented.
By the end, I didn’t see the same guy who had walked through the door an hour earlier. Now I view him as more
than a world-class skateboarder. He is also a normal person who has dealt with many of the same problems we all face,
but the difference is that he is always able to rise above his problems by having faith in his dream.
4. What does the underlined part “fell right on its face” in paragraph 2 mean
A. finished. B. continued. C. failed. D. happened.
5. The example of the author’s playing baseball is used to show he ______.
A. accepts Tony Hawk’s suggestion
B. doesn’t want to play baseball anymore
C. wants to be as successful as Tony Hawk
D. has the same view of life as Tony Hawk
6. In the eyes of the author, what makes Tony Hawk special
A. His achievement.
B. His unusual experience.
C. His confidence in winning the game.
D. His determination to realize his dream.
7. What does the author think of Tony Hawk at the end of the interview
A. Simple. B. Real. C. Lucky. D. Cautious.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has issued its first guidance on teens’ social media use. What’s
most surprising in its data-based recommendations is how little we know about how these apps influence our kids, which
means little research is available about their long-term effects on teens’ brains. Getting better data will require a lot of
money and much more openness from tech companies(公司).
What little evidence we do have unsurprisingly suggests that social media operates on motivators(激励因素) that
aren’t great for young brains. “Many kids start using social media at the worst possible time when it comes to brain
development”, says Mitch Prinstein, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina. “Things like the ‘like’ button
and artificial intelligence are going to influence young people’s brains in a way that’s very different from adult brains
when it comes to the desire to stay online and to say or do almost anything to get followers.” When it comes to social
interactions, he compares kids’ brains to a car with a huge gas pedal(油门) and weak brakes (刹车).
Earlier this year, Prinstein and his UNC colleagues published the results of one of the first studies of how the
teenage brain reacts to social media. The team surveyed a group of middle students to understand their social media
habits, and then stuck them in an MRI machine to watch their brains as they reacted to social rewards or punishments.
They found that 12-year-olds who habitually checked social media had different neural patterns(神经模式), with more
activity over time in parts of the brain related to enthusiasm and concentration.
The team didn’t weigh in on whether those differences were good or bad. But their work points to the need for more
research. It should also remind parents of the need to be aware of social media’s hidden influence on still-developing
brains.
8. What does the APA report point out about social media apps
A. The disadvantages of their motivators.
B. The shortage of data on their influence.
C. The dishonesty of social media.
D. The influence of tech companies.
9. Which word can best describe young brains in relation to social interactions
A. Tense. B. Limited. C. Uncontrolled. D. Frightened.
10. What did Prinstein’s team find in their study
A. Kids were more self-centered.
B. Social media brought about a positive effect.
C. 12-year-old kids were more enthusiastic than others.
D. Regular social media checking changed neural patterns.
11. What might be the best title for the text
A. The Limitations on Teens.
B. The Guidance on Teens’ Social Media Use.
C. The Useful Recommendations of Social Media.
D. The Hidden Impact of Social Media on Teens’ Brains.
D
Many companies have advertised a feature in their newer phones that lets users use AI as a recipe generator (生成
器) assistant.
With AI-generated recipes, casual cooks may risk a terrible meal or a life-threatening situation. Last year, Forbes
reported that one AI recipe generator produced a recipe for “aromatic (芳香的) water mix”. The recipe actually produced
deadly chlorine gas.
For food bloggers and recipe developers, this technology can threaten their livelihood. Sarah and Kaitlin Leung are
sisters who set up The Woks of Life, a food blog focused on sharing “recipes, kitchen exploits, and travels”. After an
idea is formed, they will test a recipe up to 40 times. “These companies are taking content created by real people to train
their AI models, and then competing directly with those same people. So it’s a huge sort of existential threat,” Sarah says.
Andrew Olson, a software engineer who develops recipes for his food blog, One Ingredient Chef, sees it differently.
“So much of recipe development is getting inspiration from other recipes,” he says. “They’re not reproducing it word for
word.” On his website, users can input a list of ingredients to generate a recipe that looks just like one from a cookbook.
Each recipe even includes a headnote with a sense-based description of the final product and suggestions for when and
where to serve each dish. Advanced versions of the software even generate images of what the recipe’s final product
could look like.
“I think food bloggers could use AI to be more creative, to come up with new ideas,” he says. “But I don’t think the
technology is there to the point where you can have an entirely AI-generated blog, although that would be a cool concept.
Maybe someone should try it and see how it goes.” Olson adds.
12. What problem can AI recipe generators cause
A. Higher costs of phones.
B. Accidents in cooking.
C. Threat to recipe companies.
D. Unemployment of assistants.
13. What is Sarah’s attitude towards AI-generated recipes
A. Negative. B. Unclear. C. Favourable. D. Objective.
14. What does One Ingredient Chef feature
A. It tests its recipes up to 40 times.
B. It sends a real cookbook to users.
C. It gives suggestions on a healthy dish.
D. It produces the final product’s pictures.
15. What do Olson’s words imply in the last paragraph
A. AI should be banned from generating recipes.
B. AI recipe generators can replace food bloggers.
C. Entirely AI-generated recipes are widely available.
D. The use of AI technology needs further development.
