I'm an artist, always considering art and beauty as essential to life as daily bread. However, I
didn't initially think, much about how others perceived art. Over time, I noticed that many, even
most people, regarded art as a luxury rather than a necessity.
My rudest awakening on this subject came during a visit to Britain. While exploring the country
side, I stopped at a small store that made its own cheese daily. The salesperson, a young woman
with an air of expertise, was astonished by my ignorance of milk products. WhenI asked if they sold
the cheese made that morning, she said with annoyance, “Don't you know nothing about cheese ”
Suddenly and without thinking, I said, “No. Do you know anything about art ” Her reply“No.
But that's not something you have to do with every day, and cheese is!” made me realize that for
most people, art isn't a daily essential.
Despite this common view, I firmly believe art is as crucial as food. It's the expression of our
individuality. We all share basic human qualities, feelings, and longings, but it's how we express
them uniquely that defines art.
Throughout art history, while the subject matter of paintings may be similar, the true essence
lies in the artist's unique style. Museums, which I once saw as the preserve of a few great artists,
now seem to spotlight the universal truth of individual uniqueness. They remind us that expressing
our originality is the core of art and life.
Art is everywhere in our daily lives. Whether we' re cooking, arranging flowers, or conductin
g business, art is our unique voice、helping us resist the pressure to follow and preserve our individ
ual beauty. As John Muix said, “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread.” Art is indeed a univ
ersal, individual, and fundamental truth, an essential part of our daily existence.
24. How did the author originally react to others' views on art
A. He felt curious. B. He paid little attention.
C. He was concerned. D. He was opposed to them.
25. What did the author learn during his visit to the British store
A. The beauty in cheese. B. The necessities in life.
C. Common opinion on art. D. The value of art in life.
26. Why does the author think art is crucial
A. It shapes one's personality. B. It's as common as daily bread.
C. It enriches people's lives. D. It's a way to show off oneself.
27. What does the text mainly convey to us
A. The significance of art in everyday life.
B. The author's long-term passion for art.
C. The difference between art and daily needs.
D. The history of art and the role of museums.

Smell is probably our most underappreciated sense. But a loss of smell has been linked to health
problems such as depression and cognitive (认知的) decline. And mounting evidence shows that sme
lling training may help prevent that decline.
Now, a team of researchers led by Michael Leon, has successfully boosted cognitive performance
by exposing people to smells while they sleep. Twenty participants—— all older than60 and generally
healthy— received six months of overnight smell enrichment, and all significantly improved their abili
ty to recall lists of words.
The scientists are unsure about how the overnight smell may have produced this result. ButLeon
notes that the neurons(神经元) involved in our smelling have“direct superhighway access” to brain
regions related to memory and emotion. In participants who received the treatment, the study authors
observed the physical changes in a brain structure that connects the memory and emotional centers——
a pathway that often deteriorates as people age.
Previous successful attempts to boost memory with smell typically relied on complicated interventi
ons with multiple exposures a day. If the nighttime treatment proves successful in large tests, it promi
ses to be a convenient way to achieve similar effects, says Vidya Kamath, a neuropsychologist at the
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Larger experiments may also help answer some remaining questions. The new study used widely
available essential oils, but researchers aren't sure if just any smell would get the same results. They
don't know how much an essential oil's qualities affect the cognitive gains. It is also unclear how
much novelty plays a role, says Micbael Pieniak, a psychology researcher at the University of Wrocla
w in Poland who has studied smelling training. Overnight smells could be a strong line for further stu
dy. But Pieniak cautions fans of smell training from running to try it. The results are promising, but
just a start and should be repeated with more particular participants.
28. What's Leon's research intended to check
A. If it can enhance cognitive ability.B. If it can help cure sleeplessness.
C. If it can recover the sense of smell.D. If it can improve physical health.
29. What happens to the participants in the experiment
A. They suffer from depression. B. They remember smell far better.
C. They become more emotional. D. They have changes in their brains.
30. What does the underlined word“deteriorates” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Remains stable. B. Recovers gradually.
C. Becomes worse. D. Disappears completely.
31. What is Michael Pieniak's attitude towards the findings
A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Enthusiastic.

I give a lot of advice to my graduate students, most of whom are on the job market. I find that
some young people are extremely anxious about the question, “How do I make a good impression in an
interview ”
People make judgments based on information they process in a second, below the level of consciousn
ess. That does not mean, however, that anyone is sure to fail by a naturally serious behavior, a shy char
acter, or plain old nervousness. On the contrary, a little understanding of the science of first impressions
can help anyone improve the ways they affect the brains of people they meet, and better understand others
as well.
Close behind in speed, at 100 milliseconds, comes a consistent estimation of trustworthiness. Once
again, this makes sense: you might not kill me outright, but I should still figure out if you' re trying to
take advantage of me before I interact with you. (This rapid processing also involves, for example, how
your brain decides whether to make direct eye contact with that person staring at you on the subway. )
Improving our accuracy of impression of others’ competence takes us longer because we need more time
to be confident in our judgments; quite commonly, our rapid initial judgments may be inconsistent with
what we later decide.
You might be thinking that judgments made this quickly are open to a lot of errors. The potential
cost of incorrectly seeing someone as a threat is low, but the price of mistaking them as not a threat
could be enormous. So, it's no surprise that first impressions tend to be inaccurate. Researchers in 2010
asked participants in an experiment to view photos of strangers, and based on initial impressions, to judge
aspects of their personality. The researchers found that their subjects claimed confidence in their judgment
s 70 to 80 percent of the time, but their actual accuracy was either modest or statistically nonexistent.
People may arrive at incorrect judgments about you for many different reasons. For example, if you'
re nervous when first meeting, your facial expression and behavior might not fairly represent your true
character, purpose, and competence.
32. It can be inferred that the initial estimation of trustworthiness is .
A. usually from active interaction B. faster than other information
C. after judgements about competence D. almost as fast as other judgements
33. Why are first impressions often inaccurate
A. People rely too much on statistical data.
B. Emotion plays a vital role in impression.
C. People lack patience to make judgments.
D. The time to make judgements is too short.
34. How is the text mainly developed
A. By analyzing causes and effects. B. By giving opinions and evidence.
C. By comparing different examples. D. By offering acceptable solutions.
35. What might the author continue talking about
A. How to make you trustworthy. B. How to leave a good impression.
C. How to control facial expressions. D. How to remove an observer's alarm.

Your identity is who or what you are and what you do. Just as the things you do,
such as following popular fashion, create your identity, the things you read do too. Books,
magazines or even websites you frequently read or visit influence the way you think and wha
t you believe in. 36 For example, if you had read that littering kills the earth and contr
ibutes to pollution and that has convinced you, you will believe that littering is bad. Therefo
re, you will not litter. This is the message you will spread to the people around you. This
will in turn cause the world around you to see you as someone who loves the earth and you
will not litter no matter where you go. 37
Research has shown that reading also affects the way you interacts with people around
you. Reading fiction makes you more empathetic (共情的) to the lives around you. This is
because reading stories leads you to imagine situations, and this makes you understand others
better. 38 You become less self-centred and more caring. People start seeing you as
someone who is merciful, and that becomes part of your identity.
39 What is more important, though, is that you engage in intentional reading, payi
ng close attention to what you feed your mind. Read autobiographies or biographies of peopl
e who inspire you if you want to be more like them. 40 If you want to be a songwrite
r, read more poetry! So, go on. Pick up a book today and read. A new you awaits you.
A. You'd better select a book that is suitable for you.
B. This becomes part of your identity—— an earth-lover.
C. The things you believe in, then, determine the things you do.
D. If you want to be a productive writer, read more fiction books.
E. This is because reading plays an important role in shaping your identity.
F. Therefore, it enables you to be more tolerant and accepting of differences.
G. It is important to read as it affects you to a large extent, creating your identity.

My wife Lila and I were in the middle of a heated discussion. Our 19-year-old son Andy,
who was blind, wanted to attend a college far across the country. Lila was extremely worried.
“But how will he manage on his own He's blind!” she exclaimed. I understood her concerns,
but I believed Andy was clever, ambitious, and confident. I said, “He's nineteen. He wants to
try things independently. We' ve done all we can for him. It's time to let him go.”
Then, I brought up the story of Gertie. In the third year of our marriage, before our childre
n were born, a pair of geese arrived at the small lake on our farm with a flock(群) ofCanada ge
ese in late April. After the flock left, these two geese stayed. We were excited when they starte
d nesting in the southeastern corner of the lake.
However, it was about three weeks later that disaster struck. One evening, as I was taking
a rest on the platform, weary from a long day on the farm, and Lil a was working in the
garden beside the house, we heard loud honks and wing-beating sounds from the lake. By the
time Icaught up with Lila at the nest, the male goose was dead, its neck broken. Lila found the
female goose, badly injured with a broken wing, a bleeding leg, and a missing eye. I suggeste
d putting it down, “It' ll never make it. Only one eye. A broken wing. An injured leg. And
if it does live, it will die of sorrow. They say that geese mate for life.”
But Lila was determined to save it. And she proved me wrong. She drove the goose to the
vet(兽医) that night.
Lil a fixed a bed for her by the lake and for several days, Gertie, as she named her, barely

M: So what do you think causes many girls to feel anxious about their appearances tod
ay
W: Social media plays a big part. Girls are often comparing themselves to the girls
they see online but what's seen on social media isn't always real.
M: I agree with you. Do you have any advice for girls tonight
W: Being a respected, friendly, and honest person is way more attractive than having
what society considers“good looks”.
M: Well, thank you for your time.

M: Hello, everyone. I'm James. I'd like to share my life after work with you. I hav
e lots of hobbies and join in a variety of activities. I enjoy learning new information
through surfing theInternet, which has become one of my major resources to get update
s on the world. What's more, shopping at the mall is another activity that I frequently
do in my spare time. To most men, shopping is boring. To me, however, shopping
is a chance to observe the market situation. For a marketer, like me、sizing up the
competition is very important. I also like to watch stage shows or go to the movies on
weekends, which can reduce my stress and anxiety. My favorite stage show is Once U
pon One Time, a musical written by Lisa Matsumoto. I prefer stage shows to movies
because the stage leaves more to let me imagine and understand the characters’
feelings and experiences. Along with indoor activities, I like to spend time outdoors. F
or example, I regularly challenge my fear of heights by hiking to the mountains to enj
oy the fresh air and great view.
