Once upon a time, there was a small village in the center of a big forest. All the villagers were used to their robotic farm work and none of them had the imagination or the will (意愿) to try something new, except for one girl named Jo. Very few could read or write, and Jo was one of them.
One afternoon, when Jo was on one of her explorations in the forest, she came upon an abandoned cottage (废弃的小屋). Though she’d been warned to stay away from abandoned places, her curiosity got the best of her. She slid in and was amazed to find a room full of books! Jo’s excitement was huge when she realized she had found a hidden treasure.

She came to the cottage every day and got down to reading the books. Making this her mission (使命), Jo started telling stories every day at her cottage.
In the beginning, only a few came to the readings. But word spread rapidly, causing more and more people to come, some of whom even traveled from far away to just listen to her stories. “Colour”and“color”, “favourite”and“favorite”, “honour”and“honor”…Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a“u” Is it because they are lazy Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was started by Noah Webster（1758-1843）. He was a teacher who reformed（改革）English to make American identity stronger. Linguists（语言学家）celebrate his birthday on October 16 every year.
After the Revolutionary War（1775-1783），Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary，rather than rely on British dictionaries. He dropped the British“u”in some words. And he changed“centre”into“center”for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used“subway”instead of British word“underground”. Some other examples are“soccer”and“football”，“fall”and“autumn”.
Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining（定义）preposterous（unreasonable），he wrote:“A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous. ”
Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. He also added local words.
His dictionary was widely used in schools. Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity（统一）and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom.
“He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity，”said Joshua Kendall，who is working on a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language. ”

For all the technological wonders of modern medicine health care—with its fax machines and clipboards(写字板)--is out of date. This outdated era is slowly drawing to a close as the industry catches up with the artificial--intelligence (AI) revolution.
Eric Topol, an expert in heart disease and enthusiast for digital medicine, thinks AI will be particularly useful for such tasks as examining images, observing heart traces for abnormalities or turning doctors’ words into patient records. It will be able to use masses of data to work out the best treatments, and improve workflows in hospitals. In short, Al is set to save time, lives and money.
The fear some people have is that Al will be used to deepen the assembly-line culture of modern medicine. If it gives a “gift of time” to doctors, they argue that this bonus should be used to extend consultations, rather than simply speeding through them more efficiently.
That is a fine idea, but as health swallows an ever-bigger share of national wealth, greater efficiency is exactly what is needed, at least so far as governments and insurers are concerned. Otherwise, rich societies may fail to cope with the needs of ageing and growing populations. An extra five minutes spent chatting with a patient is costly as well as valuable. The Al revolution will also enable managerial accountants to adjust and evaluate every aspect of treatment. The autonomy of the doctor will surely be weakened, especially, perhaps, in public-health systems which are duty-bound to cut unnecessary costs.
The Hippocratic Oath(誓言) holds that there is an art to medicine as well as a science and that “warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug”. There’s lots of sense in it: the patients of sympathetic physicians have been shown to recover better. Yet as the supply of human carers fails to satisfy the demand for health care, the future may involve consultations on smartphones and measurements monitored by chatbots. The considerately warmed stethoscope(听诊器), placed gently on a patient’s back, may become a relic of the past.
