Traveling has been a crucial (重要的) part of my life and has played a significant role in helping me discover who I am.
My first solo trip was to a small coastal town. As I arrived, I was immediately struck by the beauty of the ocean and the peace of the place. I rented a small bike and cycled along the coastal road. The feeling of the wind on my face and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore made me feel so alive.
During my stay, I met a local artist. She showed me her studio filled with beautiful paintings inspired by the ocean and the town. Talking to her, I realized how much I loved art and how I wanted to explore my creative side. I started taking pictures of the town’s scenery, trying to capture the beauty I saw in my own way.
Another memorable trip was to a mountainous area. The hike was challenging, with steep slopes and rocky paths. There were times when I wanted to give up, but I told myself to keep going. When I finally reached the top and saw the breathtaking view of the mountains stretching out in front of me, I felt a sense of accomplishment like never before. I learned that I was capable of much more than I thought and that perseverance (毅力) was key in achieving my goals.
Traveling has also allowed me to step out of my comfort zone. In a foreign country, I had to communicate with people in a different language, figure out how to use public transportation, and deal with unexpected situations. These experiences made me more confident and independent. I realized that I could adapt to new environments and solve problems on my own.
In conclusion, through traveling, I have discovered my love for art, my inner strength, and my ability to adapt. It has been a journey of self-discovery, and I can’t wait to see where the next trip will take me.

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are one of the most astonishing and vital ecosystems on our planet. They are often referred to as the “rain forests of the sea” due to their rich biodiversity and significant ecological importance.
Coral reefs are formed by the accumulation (积累) of calcium carbonate produced by tiny marine organisms (海洋生物) called coral polyps. These polyps work together over long periods of time to create large, complex structures that provide a habitat for a large collection of marine life.
One of the remarkable features of coral reefs is the incredible diversity of species they support. Thousands of different types of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine creatures call coral reefs home. This diversity is not only a wonder to behold but also plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the marine ecosystem.
Reefs also offer important economic benefits. They attract tourists from all over the world, contributing to local economies through activities such as diving, and fishing.
However coral reefs are currently facing numerous threats. Climate change is a major concern, as rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching. When water gets too warm, corals expel (排出) the symbiotic algae that gives them their color and provides essential nutrients, often leading to the death of the coral. Pollution, overfishing, and destructive fishing practices also pose significant risks to the health and survival of these delicate ecosystems.
It is our responsibility to take action and protect coral reefs for the benefit of present and future generations. Only through our collective efforts can we hope to preserve these magnificent underwater landscapes and the countless species that depend on them.
8. The author mentions that coral reefs are often called the “rain forests of the sea” mainly to emphasize ______.

The human brain is a remarkable organ, especially when it comes to language learning. Scientists have long been fascinated by how the brain processes languages and the differences in language acquisition between children and adults.
Recent research has shown that the brain’s plasticity plays a crucial role in language learning. Plasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt. In children, the brain is highly plastic, which allows them to pick up languages with relative ease. Their brains are like sponges (海绵), soaking up new words, grammar rules, and pronunciation patterns quickly. For example, young children can often learn a second language without an accent, something that is much more difficult for adults.
One area of the brain that is particularly important for language learning is Broca’s area. Located in the frontal lobe, Broca’s area is responsible for speech production and language processing. When we speak, Broca’s area coordinates (协调) the muscles in our mouth, tongue, and throat to form words. Damage to this area can lead to speech disorders, such as difficulty in forming sentences and expressing thoughts clearly.
Another key region is Wernicke’s area, which is found in the temporal lobe. Wernicke’s area is involved in language comprehension. It helps us understand the meaning of words and sentences we hear or read. If there is damage to Wernicke’s area, a person may be able to speak fluently (流利地) but may not make sense, as they have trouble understanding the language they are using.
As we age, the brain’s plasticity decreases. This is why adults often find it more challenging to learn a new language. However, it doesn’t mean that adults can’t learn languages effectively. Adult brains can still form new neural connections through practice and repetition. For instance, language immersion programs, where adults are surrounded by the target language, can be very effective in promoting language learning.
In addition to the physical changes in the brain, cognitive (认知) factors also play a role. Motivation, for example, is a significant factor in language learning. Adults who are highly motivated to learn a new language tend to be more successful. They are more likely to practice regularly, seek out opportunities to use the language, and persevere through difficulties.
As a whole, the brain’s structure and function, along with cognitive factors, all contribute to the process of language learning. Whether you are a child or an adult, understanding how the brain works in language learning can help you find the most effective ways to acquire a new language.
12 What can be learned according to the recent research
A. Children’s brains are less plastic than adults’.
B. Adults can never learn a new language as effectively as children.
C. Adults may face more difficulties in acquiring a new language.
D. Both children and adults can learn a second language without an accent.
13. If a person can speak fluently but illogically, which is most likely damaged
A. Broca’s area. B. Wernicke’s area.
C. The temporal lobe as a whole. D. The frontal lobe in general.
14. Which contributes to effective language learning in adults
A. Relying solely on textbooks for learning.
B. Being absorbed in the language environment.
C. Strictly following grammar rules from the beginning.
D. Avoiding speaking until perfect pronunciation is achieved.
15. What can be inferred form the last paragraph
A. Children are better at language learning than adults.
B. Adults should focus only on cognitive factors for language learning.
C. Language immersion program is the best way to learn a language.
D. Language learning involves both physical and mental aspects.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Stay Focused While Studying
With increasing schoolwork, many students find their attention wandering during study time. Follow these research-based methods to improve concentration and achieve better academic results.
____16____. Find a quiet corner away from high-traffic areas at home. Keep only necessary items like textbooks, notebooks and pens on the desk. Research from Stanford University reveals that students using organized spaces completed math problems 28% faster than those in messy environments. Additionally, use a comfortable chair — poor posture can reduce blood flow to the brain by 15%.
Try the Pomodoro Technique (番茄工作法), developed in the 1980s. Set a timer for 25 minutes of focused study, followed by a 5-minute break. ____17____. During breaks, do light exercises like shoulder rolls or look out the window — eye doctors recommend the 20-20-20 rule(every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds).
Snack wisely during long study sessions. Foods like walnuts rich in omega-3, blueberries with antioxidants, and dark chocolate(70% cocoa)support brain function. A 2023 UCLA study found students consuming sugary drinks scored 12% lower on memory tests compared to water drinkers. ____18____.
Digital distractions (分心) are productivity’s worst enemy. Silence phone notifications. Use website blockers like Cold Turkey. ____19____. For necessary emergencies, enable “Do Not Disturb” mode while allowing calls from family members.
Finally, understand that multitasking is a myth. When switching between English essays and math problems, your brain needs time to reload information. Neuroscientists estimate that it takes 23 minutes to regain deep focus after interruptions (中断). ____20____. As author Greg McKeown advises, “What if you stopped trying to do it all... and started doing just what matters ”
A. Natural light improves learning efficiency by 18%
B. Choose a specific area only for academic work
C. And place your phone in another room during studying
D. Energy-boosting foods enhance neural connections
E. Single-tasking increases information retention (保留) by 35%
F. Short breaks help the brain strengthen memories
G. Therefore, always choose natural foods rather than packaged snacks

One sunny Saturday afternoon, 16-year-old Jack, along with his best friend Tom, decided to explore the old abandoned house at the end of their street. The house had been empty for years, its windows boarded up (用木板封住) and the front yard overgrown with grass. There were all sorts of rumors about the place, some saying it was haunted (闹鬼的), while others claimed it was filled with hidden treasures from its former owner.
Jack and Tom were both adventurous boys and the mystery of the old house drew them in. As they carefully pushed open the old front door, a cloud of dust rose up, making them cough. Inside, the air was musty and the furniture was covered in thick layers of dust. Sunlight shone through the narrow gaps in the boarded windows. They walked slowly, their eyes wide with curiosity as they examined the old, broken items.
Suddenly, Tom stumbled (绊脚) upon a small, locked wooden box hidden under a pile of old newspapers in the corner of the living room. “Look at this, Jack!” Tom shouted, holding up the box. Jack’s eyes lit up. “I wonder what’s inside,” he said, trying to open the box but failed.
Just then, they heard a strange noise coming from upstairs. It sounded like footsteps, slow and heavy. Jack and Tom froze, their faces turning pale. The floorboards above creaked (嘎吱作响) under the weight of something unseen. A spider web brushed Tom’s face as he suddenly stepped backward, cold sweat soaking through his collar. Through the dusty air, they noticed faint scratches (轻微划痕) on the stairs. “What was that ” Tom whispered. “I... I don’t know,” Jack replied, his heart pounding in his chest. “Maybe it’s just the wind or something.” But the noise came again, louder this time, and they were sure it wasn’t the wind.

Leave the Wild Animals Alone
In recent years, feeding wild animals has become a common practice, posing a threat to their health. Unnatural foods can lead to digestive issues and even death. Besides, it alters their natural behavior.
To protect wildlife, we must educate tourists about the dangers of feeding animals. Parks and wildlife reserves should implement clear signage and provide information that relates to the importance of keeping a safe distance. Let’s promote responsible tourism and respect for nature.
Remember, wild animals thrive best when left alone. Together, we can ensure their survival for future generations.

With trembling hands, Mr. Wilson unlocked it using a key from his pocket. Inside lay a faded photograph and a letter. Tears filled his eyes as he read aloud: “To whoever finds this — please return these memories to my family.” The boys realized the real treasure wasn’t gold but a promise kept across decades.
