Paris is a city full of sites of different times and architectural styles. Here are some of these famous spots that are essential to understand the city’s complicated past.
Eiffel Tower
Presented as part of the 1889 World Exposition in Paris, the Eiffel Tower has become the city’s most famous attraction. It is accessible on Line 6 or Line 8 of the Paris Metro by Bir-Hakeim or Trocadéro stations. If possible, avoid visiting this spot at peak hours (10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) or on weekends, so you can make the most of your visit to enjoy the views from the top. Dating back to the 12th century, the Notre-Dame Cathedral has long towered alongside the banks of the Seine River. Visitors are not allowed to enter now.

It is easily accessible on Line 1 from the Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre station. It is closed on Tuesdays as well as January 1, May 1, and December 25 each year.
Arc de Triomphe
The Arc de Triomphe serves as a national symbol of France, which was built by Napoleon I in celebration of the victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. Take Line 1, 2, or 6 to Charles de Gaulle-Etoile station and you will see the Arc de Triomphe. Visitors can purchase tickets for a tour to the top to enjoy the views of the city.

John loved fairytales as a child and went on to study English literature at Oxford University. There, he joined a literary club with friends who shared his passion. However, World War I changed everything for him and his friends. During the Battle of the Somme, his unit suffered heavy losses, but John was sent home because he had trench fever, which saved his life. By the end of the war, many of his literary friends had not survived.
After the war, John became a professor at Oxford. Despite his academic responsibilities, he had a strong desire to write his own fiction. Inspired by fairytales, he began creating a grand mythology for England. However, when he tried to publish this extensive work, publishers rejected it, finding it too long and complicated.
In addition to his mythology, John entertained his children with bedtime stories, often making them up on the spot. One day, he wrote, “In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.” This simple line led to the creation of The Hobbit, a children’s book that became very popular and made John Ronald Reuel Tolkien a well-known author.
Despite the success of The Hobbit, Tolkien never gave up on his grand mythology, which he named The Silmarillion. Unfortunately, even as a best-selling author, he faced continued rejection from publishers who were more interested in a sequel to The Hobbit than in his complex mythology. Nonetheless, Tolkien stayed committed to his imaginative world, showing his strong dedication to his creative vision.
24. What do we know about John’s experience in World War Ⅰ
A. He was saved by a member of his literary club.
B. He returned to the battlefield to realize his ambition.
C. He survived the most intense fighting in the Somme.
D. He was relieved from the front line early due to his illness.
25. What influenced John’s desire to write his own fiction
A. His academic qualification. B. His love for fairytales.
C. His role as a professor. D. His membership in a literary club.
26. Why did John write The Hobbit
A. To change his writing style. B. To amuse his children.
C. To satisfy the market. D. To shoulder his responsibilities.
27. Why did John keep working on his mythology despite rejections
A. To follow his dream. B. To gain popularity.
C. To prove publishers wrong. D. To express his creativity.

The United Kingdom is hosting the AI Safety Summit, bringing politicians, computer scientists and big AI company leaders to a site chosen for its symbolism: Bletchley Park, the birthplace of computing and code-breaking.
During World War II, a group of mathematicians, chess masters and other experts gathered at the Victorian country house 72 kilometers northwest of London to start a secret war against Nazi Germany. Their goal was to break a set of constantly changing codes produced by Nazi Germany’s Enigma machine. To do it, Bletchley Park’s wartime scientists — building on work done by Polish code-breakers — developed Colossus, the first programmable digital computer. Some historians say cracking the code helped shorten the war by up to two years.
“It has oversimplified its true contribution by describing Bletchley Park as a playground for Turing and other scientists.” said historian Chris Smith, author of The Hidden History of Bletchley Park. “Although it fits into the romantic idea that a group of smart men with a bit of wool and some yards of wire can win the war. In fact, almost 10,000 people worked at Bletchley Park during the war. Three quarters of them were women. It’s basically a factory... Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. When peace came, the code-breakers returned to civilian life and promised to keep secret about their wartime work. It was not until the 1970s that the work at Bletchley Park became widely known in Britain.”
In 1994, the site opened as a museum, after local historians banded together to prevent it from being pulled down to build a supermarket. It was restored to its 1940s appearance, complete with old typewriters, phones and cups — including the one tied to a heater in Hut 8, where Turing led the Enigma team.
28. What can we learn about Colossus
A. It was invented by Nazi Germany.
B. It was designed to send secret messages.
C. Polish code-breakers also made a contribution to it.
D. The project’s goal was to produce the first computer.
29. What did Chris Smith most probably imply
A. Women’s hard work was overlooked.
B. The secret should not be kept for so long.
C. The computer ought to be more powerful.
D. It is silly to say the machine shortened the war.
30. Why is the cup mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To highlight the government’s support.
B. To show the perfect restoration of the site.
C. To stress Turing’s important role in the project.
D. To tell the difficulty in collecting the lost items.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To advocate women’s equal rights with men.
B. To advertise a newly restored computer museum.
C. To show the significance of an important meeting.
D. To add some background to the AI safety meeting.
D
Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you tend to like more Surprisingly, the answer is Person B. This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.
32. Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience
A. To illustrate a dilemma in making choices.
B. To suggest a way of striking up friendships.
C. To stress the importance of strategic requests.
D. To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect.
33. What is a reason for people’s tendency to like those asking for favors
A. Reducing the tension caused by social contact.
B. Increasing the chance of getting help in return.
C. Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts.
D. Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust.
34. What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4
A. Selfless. B. Impolite. C. Aggressive. D. Responsible.
35. What does the author think of the Ben Franklin Effect
A. It makes little sense. B. It applies to most cultures.
C. It has situational limitations. D. It has great practical significance.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The Hardest Novel I’ve Ever Read
For the last three months, I have glared at its fat heavy form on my floor with a vague sense of personal failure. I have opened Ulysses twice, determined to finish it, and managed to get all the way to page 46. ____36____
____37____ I like the community this book has created, its inherent sense of freedom and celebration of all things rude and true. I like that the style and language allow for readers to choose how they read it — some recommend skipping chapter three, others suggest reading it only after reading ABOUT it but I still get stuck.
Why do I get stuck ____38____ On the “Most Difficult Novels” list on the Goodreads website, Joyce takes the top two spots, with Ulysses ranking first and Finnegans Wake following it. I think what is restricting me to page 46 is the language: the big fat burst of Chaucerian English with slang and jaunty dialogue that, while entertaining me, is also leaving me a little lost.
There are a few other “worthy” works of literature I have yet to read, including Infinite Jest and War and Peace. ____39____ I really want to love Ulysses. I feel deeply frustrated that I can’t finish it, all the while appreciating its uniqueness, weightiness and special “Joyceness.”
The English writer Virginia Woolf thought Ulysses was nonsense as she complained in her diaries about the pressure to finish reading it. By contrast, Vladimir Nabokov, the author who wrote Lolita expressed deep love for it. ____40____ I have read it similar to a long marriage (something unpleasant, big reward at the end), modern Jazz-fusion (an innovative genre) and boxing match with oneself (wanting to punch yourself in the face), which is how I felt by page 46.
Some people love Ulysses, so where am I getting wrong My ultimate hope is that the struggle will be worth the effort and I can proceed victorious onto page 800 or so, on my third fourth, eighteenth try. Something tells me I will get there in the end.
A. I’m not entirely sure myself.
B. A lot of them are weighty tomes (巨著), but I like big books.
C. I have read so little both times that I have never bothered using a bookmark.
D. It seems that reading Ulysses is a big different experience for everyone.
E. Even when staring at pages without absorbing a word, I thought nice thoughts about it.
F. They, however, only cause me a slight sense of shame that I have not read or enjoyed them.
G. I have been amused and charmed by the first two or three chapters, and then puzzled and bored.

In the early months of my junior year at Valley Forge High School, I decided to volunteer at the local animal shelter. My initial motive was simple: I needed to fulfill community service hours required for graduation. However, what started as a mere obligation soon turned into a journey of meaningful personal growth and understanding.
Upon my first visit to the shelter, I was immediately struck by the number of animals in need and the obvious sense of urgency among the staff and volunteers. Dogs barked eagerly from their cages, while cats paced restlessly. The shelter manager, Mrs Clark, a veteran in animal rescue, guided me through the orientation process. She detailed the daily tasks which included feeding the animals, cleaning their living spaces, and, most importantly, spending time socializing with them. It was clear from the beginning that this work would demand more than just my time; it required compassion and dedication.
As weeks turned into months, my connection with the animals deepened. I learned to recognize their unique personalities and needs. Some were shy and withdrawn, needing much more time to engage, while others were excited and playful from the start. The more time I spent at the shelter, the more I realized how each interaction with an animal was a chance to provide them with a sense of security and love — a small comfort in their uncertain world.
The responsibilities I held at the shelter also grew with time. Mrs Clark trusted me with more complex tasks such as administering medication and assisting in the adoption process. This trust not only boosted my confidence but also showed the importance of my role in these animals’ lives. The gratitude I saw in both the animals’ and adopters’ eyes was rewarding.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
As my senior year began, I took on even greater responsibilities at the shelter.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Today on the food program, I’m going to tell you about two interesting websites which give you information about two very important foods — rice and noodles. First of all, let’s look at the Pagewise website. This site will tell you about the history of rice, the different types of rice and how to cook it. For example, European and American rice is grown in dry fields. But it absorbs more water than Asian rice, which is grown in flooded fields. Nowadays, more than 550 million tonnes is produced around the world each year, 92% of that being produced in Asia. Now, moving on to the Yokohama Noodle Museum site. The museum stays open later than most museums — from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, with the last admission being 10:00 pm. The museum is open every day except for Tuesday, with Sunday being the busiest day and Thursday being the least busy. The first floor of the museum has a souvenir shop. It sells bowls for eating noodles out of, equipment for making noodles — even curtains with pictures of noodles on them! You can see a display showing how noodles are made. On B1F and B2F, there are different noodle shops, which take orders until 30 minutes before closing time.

Good morning, everyone! With the world digitizing, I’m considerably honored to introduce AI — artificial intelligence to you. Basically, AI is a branch of computer science that aims to create intelligent machines.
Undeniably, AI boasts an unlimited number of applications, ranging from autonomous vehicles to domestic robots, transforming the way we live. Nevertheless, as we become increasingly dependent on this technology, some people feel threatened by its advances.

Paragraph 1:
As my senior year began, I took on even greater responsibilities at the shelter. Mrs Clark appointed me as a volunteer coordinator, a role that involved training new volunteers. This position challenged me to develop leadership skills and learn how to manage a team effectively. Each day presented new challenges, from coordinating fundraising events to handling the delicate situations of animals in distress. My ability to make quick, compassionate decisions grew, as did my commitment to the welfare of the animals and the shelter.
Paragraph 2:
Reflecting on my time at the shelter, I realize how much I have grown, not just in skills but also in spirit. The experience has instilled in me a lifelong commitment to animal welfare and has influenced my decision to pursue a career in animal medicine. The shelter has taught me about warmth, the impact of small acts of kindness, and the harmonious connection between humans and animals. This journey has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, shaping me into a more empathetic and dedicated individual.
