The story of an 11-year-old piano prodigy (奇才) Jude Kofie, warmed hearts on Twitter after a complete stranger gifted the boy a 15,000 piano.
“He’s beyond special. He’s at the Mozart level,” piano tuner (调音师) Bill Magnusson said of young Kofie’s musical talent. Magnusson, using the money he received from his father, gifted a 15,000 piano to Kofie after he saw the piano prodigy on local news.
Kofie cheered in excitement as the piano was wheeled into his Colorado home for the first time in a video that was shared on CBS News Sunday Morning. CBS News Sunday Morning later summed up Kofie’s story in a tweet that went viral (走红) with over 10,000 likes-Eleven-year-old Jude Kofie, of Aurora, Colorado, demonstrated a remarkable talent when he discovered an old keyboard and, without any lessons, began playing.
Twitter users responded to the emotional story, with one reporter calling Jude Kofie and his family “amazing people”. Magnusson decided to help Kofie after he saw the boy playing the piano in a local news story. However, Magnusson was concerned that Kofie was not able to afford the piano lessons from professional teachers that he needed to grow as an excellent piano player. “What resources are left over to help this special little soul ” Magnusson asked. Magnusson also promised Kofie’s family that he would tune the piano once a month for the rest of his life. “We’re family now,” he said.
Jude Kofie’s father, Isaiah Kofie, was shocked at Magnusson’s generosity. “All for free!” he said. “Who does that ” he asked, becoming visibly emotional. He also said that he was extremely grateful for Magnusson’s kindness to his son.

If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again.
It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science& Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society.
In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet.
The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study.
“Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said Shahmohammadi.
The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.
The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks& clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.
28. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the new report
A. To recommend a strange shopping habit. B. To introduce a respected scientific journal.
C. To analyze online shopping. D. To prove the advantage of offline shopping.
29. What does the underlined word “aggregate” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Combine. B. Produce. C. Divide. D. Check.
30. What can we learn about “the last mile” delivery
A. It is designed by the research team. B. It is managed by the factories.
C. It causes high greenhouse gas emissions. D. It influences the total greenhouse gas footprints.
31. According to the analysis, which is probably the most eco-friendly way to shop
A. Buying at physical stores. B. Buying from bricks & clicks.
C. Buying from pure players. D. Buying a few items per time.
D
In the old days — say, the 1980s — if you bought a piece of technology, a paperback user guide came with it. It was the manufacturer’s one big chance to explain its engineers’ thinking to you, to communicate what the designers and marketers had in mind.
Supplying documentation seemed, at the time, like a good idea all around. Mastery made customers happy, and happy customers meant repeat sales. But there were other forces at play. Printing and binding took time and money — and customers didn’t seem to be reading user manuals.
Over time, therefore, physical manuals began disappearing from our hardware and software boxes. Maybe you’d get a Quick Start leaflet, but the rest was online.
Online, you can search for certain terms, find topics faster and post questions for other people. Online communities and answer sites sprang up. Mini tutorials on the Internet began showing you how to perform a task. And it’s all free.
Meanwhile the kind of technologies we use has changed. “People increasingly spend time in apps and social sites that have a fairly simple interface (界面),” Tim O’Reilly told me. (He’s founder of O’Reilly Media, which publishes my own how-to books. )You don’t need a manual to use Google.
That was the beginning of the end for physical manuals. In principle, the death of professionally prepared support materials shouldn’t be any cause for concern. It’s just another big change caused by the Internet, another in the list of casualties, such as printed encyclopedias, newspaper classified ads and music on discs.
In reality, though, none of the tech industry’s teaching channels, whether physical or online, is universal and effective. To this day, it’s astonishing how little we know about our phones, computers and software. A Microsoft product manager once told me that most feature requests the company gets for Microsoft Office are, in fact, already features of Microsoft Office.
Hardware and software makers still operate with their traditional business model: Every year or so they sell us a new version, whose appeal is supposed to be more features. And so, as time goes by, our devices and apps become more and more complex — but access to documentation remains limited and incomplete.
In the fantasy version of our world, designers would make our tech products simple enough, their important features obvious enough, for the masses to figure out on their own. Until then, there will be a growing information gap between the features we want and the engineering work that’s already been done.
32. The word “casualties” (paragraph 6) is closest in meaning to _________.
A. causes B. manuals C. industries D. victims
33. Why did the author mention what a Microsoft product manager once told him
A. To criticize the lack of access that we have to complete documentation.
B. To reveal the traditional business model that software makers operate with.
C. To emphasize that it is a pity that physical manuals are no longer available.
D. To illustrate that people actually know little about the tech products they use.
34. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Tech companies’ teaching channels are shrinking as time goes by.
B. There is little chance that tech products will soon be simple enough.
C. Printed manuals worked better than online versions.
D. Consumers of the 1980s loved to read user manuals.
35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A. What Happened to User Manuals
B. How Did Physical Manuals Prosper
C. How Simple Will Our Tech Products Be
D. What Change Has the Internet Brought About

My family moved from Toowoomba, Canada to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain from the 1950s epidemic of polio (小儿麻痹症). She wished to visit specialists in London. The day before we boarded the ship, Father bade a tender farewell to his five-year-old “friend” at the dock(码头), an Australian cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas.
Six weeks later, a letter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father’s face crumbling and his eyes glistening as he read the letter. We tried to comfort him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was. Sandy has advertised constantly on ABC radio and other local newspapers. Despite some “sightings” in the dock at first, the dog was never found later. It seems Spider decided to search for us elsewhere.
We sailed back two years later and re-established our home in Toowoomba. My father immediately began his own searching for Spider. Several months passed but there was still no news concerning Spider. The dog was gone, possibly shot or dead from starvation or exhaustion.
One cold morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an old lady who said she was putting food out “for a very old dog”. In the night the food disappeared. This had been going on for a few weeks. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework and we set off immediately. When we arrived at the old lady’s house, she invited us into an old bush. Sadly, she then told us that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle (口哨) for Spider.

A. What Happened to User Manuals B. How Did Physical Manuals Prosper
C. How Simple Will Our Tech Products Be D. What Change Has the Internet Brought About
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. B 35. A

【答案】Suddenly there was a bark in the bush. My father jumped out of his seat and ran outside. We heard him calling Spider’s name. We waited nervously inside, praying that Spider would come back to us. After a few minutes, we heard my father’s voice again, louder and more excited this time. He came back inside, holding a thin and ragged-looking Spider in his arms. The dog had a few cuts and scratches on his face and legs, but he was alive. We were overjoyed to see Spider again.
From then on, Spider and my father would hang out at the dock. They would walk along the beach and watch the ships come in and out of the harbor. Spider enjoyed this routine, and my father would tell him stories about all the experiences he had while he was away. Spider was always by his side, faithful and loyal as ever. They had been through so much, but years and vast distances couldn’t break their bond. Spider found his way back to us against all odds. We were grateful to have him back, and we knew that he would always be a cherished member of our family.
