I moved to Placencia on the coast of southern Belize in 1995. Back then, I was working as a research assistant and scuba-diving instructor. That meant that I had access to Belize’s coral reefs (珊瑚礁), and that I began to witness the reefs’ health was becoming worse. In the following years, I saw the effects of the climate on them, which caused me to consider whether we could restore the corals.
Coral-reef restoration has been the focus of debate. Most scientists insist that it is a losing battle in a warming world. However, my team members think that it can be an uphill battle. Done in the right way, the work can help the corals, their ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
Since 2010, we have restored more than 20 sites across seven protected areas. Annual analyses of nine sites showed that coral cover increased from 6% in 2014 to more than 60% in 2021. Although survival rates could turn out to be a lot worse this year, nearly 80% of 1,200 transplanted (移植) coral reefs had survived.
In 2013, we founded a program called Fragments of Hope to continue our coral-restoration work. Since then, we have employed only people who live in Belize. More than 100 have trained with us so far. Each person who worked with us last year earned around $5,000. And this year, it will be around $10,000. Our work has helped solve the problem of employment. Today, around 25 researchers use Fragments of Hope for their work, and they are trying to work out how to improve waste-water treatment. Undoubtedly, our program has made a difference to the locals and other researchers.
I often feel like giving up. But as long as the corals don’t, nor will I. Whenever I see tiny remnants (剩余部分) of coral fusing together to create a living coating over what had looked like a huge dead coral skeleton, I am persuaded to keep trying.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has been the focus of AI research since the 1950s. So far humans haven’t created an artificial intelligence that can solve intellectual tasks like humans. But some scientists believe that this may happen as soon as within the next five years.
One of them is Robert Johansson. He believes that it can be of great benefit to humans and will have a broader impact on society in a completely different way than today’s AI. Meanwhile, he sees challenges in a troubled world. AGI could be used for various purposes, for example, to create division in society. It’s a technology humans really have to handle with care.
But fulfilling such an ambition is a big challenge. Different researchers try to approach the problem in different ways. Some believe that large-scale language models like ChatGPT are the way to go, while others suggest simulating (模拟) the brain. The path that Robert Johansson has chosen to follow is called principle-based. This means that he has tried to identify important psychological learning principles that could explain intelligence and then use them in a computer.
The logic system is called the Non-Axiomatic Reasoning System(NARS), which is designed to operate without complete data and provide a flexibility that is important for dealing with problems in the real world. The combination of NARS and learning psychology principles forms an approach that Robert Johansson calls Machine Psychology. He thinks that AI should learn from different experiences during its lifetime and then apply what it has learned to different situations, just as humans begin to do as early as 18 months old.
Whether humans will succeed in creating its intellectual equal within five years remains to be seen. “We live in a society with laws and rules and moral bases. It’s necessary to learn how to view the rights and obligations of such agents. Maybe AGI will just be a program you run in your browser, but I think that if it has a consciousness, it’s still some kind of life,” says Robert Johansson.

Electrically stimulating a particular region in the brain could help people with injured spinal cords (脊髓) walk more easily, according to a recent research.
The research was done by a Swiss team who has made several breakthroughs, including using electrical stimulation of the spinal cord to let several injured patients walk again. This time, the researchers wanted to figure out which region of the brain was most responsible for people recovering from such injuries.
Using 3D imaging techniques to map out the brain activity of mice, they were surprised to find that the brain region was in the lateral hypothalamus (外侧下丘脑), known as a regulator for feeding and motivation. A group of neurons in this region appear to be involved in the recovery of walking. Next, the team tried to amplify the signal from these neurons using a procedure called deep brain stimulation. It involves a surgeon implanting electrodes in the brain region, which are connected to a device implanted in the patient’s chest. When switched on, the device sends electrical pulses up to the brain and then enhances them.
The team tested their theory on rats and mice, finding that it immediately improved walking. The first human participant was a woman and then Wolfgang Jaeger, both of whom have an incomplete spinal cord injury. They could turn on their device whenever they needed, and went through months of recovery and strength training. Jaeger faced eight steps down to the sea during a holiday last year. With the device turned on, he had no problem walking up and down those steps. Over time, he became faster and could walk longer even when the device was switched off.
More research is still needed, and this technique will not be effective for all patients. While deep brain stimulation is now fairly common, some people are not so comfortable with someone operating on their brain. The researchers believe that in the future, the best option must be stimulating both their spinal cord and lateral hypothalamus.
