There's another universe not far from land. It lacks buildings, trees, cars, cellphones and the Internet. Seemingly limitless water extends uninterruptedly in all directions. Civilization goes away, along with any sign of humanity. And it is why I’m really interested in sailing. I grew up around boats. My father liked sailing and built them.
My older sister and I were stuffed into a car nearly every summer weekend until my late teens to make the trip from northeast Indiana to the south shore of Lake Erie in Ohio, where Talisman built by my father waited patiently through the week.
As a kid, I read the adventures of Robin Lee Graham, a traveller exploring the sea alone, in the pages of National Geographic and, later, in Graham’s book, Dove. However, it wasn’t until about 20 years ago, well into my adulthood, that I took up sailing in a serious way. I’ve made voyages in fair and stormy weather, on my own boats and those of my friends, and ranging from nearshore day sails to blue-water passages.
Still, I’ve made plenty of mistakes. While living in Asia, a sailing friend and I set off across the South China Sea and intended to get to Thailand, only to be pushed by a late-season typhoon that forced us to make landfall in Vietnam, glad to be alive.
Years later, my wife and I lived aboard our 37-foot ship, Symbiosis, while we saved enough to take a two-year leave from our jobs to journey down the U. S. Atlantic coast and through the Bahamas and the Caribbean. We visited many places that never see ships or airplanes and that are nearly impossible to reach anyway other than at the helm (舵柄) of a small boat. But boats are expensive and time-consuming.
After returning from the Caribbean a few years ago, we decided to sell Symbiosis, determining to sail only “other people’s boats”. It didn’t last, though. A few months ago, we found a good deal on a smaller sailboat — easier to maintain but still capable of some short offshore journeys. I think we’ll name her Talisman.
24.What would the author do on summer weekends as a kid
A.He would explore the lost civilization.
B.He would tour northeast Indiana by car.
C.He would patiently wait for his father.
D.He would sail with his father and his sister.
25.What can we learn about the book Dove
A.It is the most famous work by Graham.
B.It was published in National Geographic.
C.It has something to do with exploring the sea.
D.It was an inspiration for the author’s writing.
26.Why did the author sell his ship Symbiosis
A.It didn’t function well. B.He couldn’t afford to maintain it.
C.He was tired of sailing. D.He assumed others’ boats were better.
27.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text
A.To show his passion for sailing boats.
B.To stress the influence of adventures on him.
C.To discuss the problems of sailing on the sea.
D.To share his success in exploring the world.

The country’s increasing adoption of smart technologies in food production was recently showcased at an annual fair in Yangling, Shaanxi province, which featured a range of agricultural innovations focused on improving productivity.
Among those displayed at the 31st China Yangling Agricultural High-tech Fair included a digital irrigation (灌溉) system designed to improve water efficiency. The system has helped Shaanxi province, a major wheat production area, curb agricultural water usage by about 18 million cubic meters each year and cut electricity consumption by 20 million kilowatt-hours.
Drones designed for monitoring orchards situated in mountainous regions, along with tablets that allow for remote control of fertilization (施肥) during crop watering, are also attracting significant attention from fair visitors.
At the booth of Raintech, an agricultural startup in Beijing, a range of instruments were on display, including a mini-meteorological station capable of monitoring (监控) greenhouse environment and sending real-time data, such as temperature, to a smartphone app.
“The sensors integrated into the device can also monitor humidity, light intensity, atmospheric pressure and carbon dioxide levels,” said Liu Hongtao, manager of the company.
By analyzing this data using AI-driven algorithms, the system can predict nighttime temperatures and alert growers to potential frost damage.
This innovation — coupled with other devices aimed at automating greenhouse environmental control, such as a supplementary lighting system —— significantly benefits the advancement of facility agriculture.
This sector has strict light and temperature requirements during both day and night, making environmental control technologies essential for optimum production.
Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs showed that, currently, 2.67 million hectares of crops are grown in greenhouses in China.
Greenhouse farming also plays an important role in the production of animal protein, with70 percent of the country’s meat, eggs and milk and 52 percent of aquatic products relying on this method of cultivation.
28.What does the underlined word “curb” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Reduce. B.Adjust. C.Cover. D.Record.
29.Which of the following is a function of the products of Raintech
A.Watering crops. B.Controlling fertilization.
C.Monitoring temperature. D.Reducing carbon emission.
30.Why does the writer use the data in the last two paragraphs
A.To explain the working principles of the devices.
B.To introduce the productivity of China’s agriculture.
C.To show the importance of greenhouse farming in China.
D.To describe the rapid development of Chinese agriculture.
31.What is the writing purpose of this passage
A.To report a news event. B.To advertise a new product.
C.To share opinions on innovation. D.To draw attention to agriculture.
D
Superhighways of vessels (血管) beneath our skin transport blood and nutrients. These natural pathways branch out like tree limbs to help our body move food and oxygen to our organs. Our bodies make vessels naturally, but bioengineers also want to make them artificially. And now a team of engineers has found a cool new way to do that in the lab: They use ice.
To make the vessels, the engineers first needed a template (模板) from which to build the tissue. “Originally, we were trying to do this with wax (蜡),” says Ozdoganlar, a mechanical engineer who’s leading the new vessel-building project at Carnegie Mellon University. But wax proved “too soft,” he says. “And it’s not necessarily biocompatible (生物兼容的),” or suitable for use in the body. Then they thought of Elsa’s magic in a Disney movie Frozen.
Ice seemed like a good alternative to wax. It costs little and is readily available. And since it’s not poisonous, the body won’t reject it. And printing the ice template is simple. First, engineers program its shape into a 3-D printer. The printer then drops water onto a very cold surface. The printer repeats this process until the vessel’s shape is complete. In all, it takes less than 30 seconds. This icy vessel template is then encased in gelatin, a clear substance without any taste. Shining ultraviolet light on the gelatin hardens it as the ice melts away. What’s left are realistic-looking channels for blood to move through.
So far, the Carnegie Mellon team has tested the gel channels with endothelial cells. These are the cells that line the inner walls of blood vessels. In one experiment, those cells survived two weeks lining the artificial vessels. This is promising, but there is still a long way to go before such replacement vessels could be transplanted into people.
In the future, such artificial vessels could be used as part of lab-made organs to save the lives of people urgently awaiting donated organs for transplant. “This is really a game changer,” says Ozdoganlar.
32.What inspired the team of engineers to use ice instead
A.The movie Frozen. B.Its low cost.
C.The new project. D.Its easy availability.
33.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.The differences between ice and wax. B.The reason for printing the ice template.
C.The application of 3-D printing technology. D.The advantages of ice as vessel printing stuff.
34.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A.The lab can mass produce organs for use. B.The technology is not yet mature at this point.
C.The artificial vessels will be put to use soon. D.The organ transplantation is easier to perform.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To sing high praise for engineers’ work. B.To make known a technical innovation.
C.To promote vessels made by using ice. D.To encourage technological innovation.

If you are looking for apart-time job, fill out applications at shops where you often do your shopping. 39 If you have teenagers in your home who are ready for a job, encourage them to work at your family’s favourite stores with employee discounts too. Not only will you benefit from the discount but you will also gain access to a new world of inside information on upcoming sales!
Why not help your friend move Always help friends pack their belongings and load the truck when they are moving. When people are loading their households into boxes, they usually find items that they no longer need or do not want to pack or unpack. As a result, you can bring home hundreds of pounds worth of frozen food, tableware, books, toys, furniture(家具) and other household items. 40

Once upon a time, there lived a young boy named Jack who harbored a deep passion for playing the piano, a passion that lit his soul and filled his days with melodies. His dream was to become a famous pianist, hoping to charm audiences with his enchanting tunes. Every night, as he lay in bed, he imagined himself standing on grand stages. receiving thunderous applause and the admiration of countless music lovers.
However, life had other plans for him. When Jack was interviewed for a well-known music school, his heart sank as he received a rejection letter, stating that his skills were not up to the school’s high standards, a cruel blow that left him feeling uncertain about his future.
Disappointed but not discouraged, Jack decided to turn his setback into a stepping stone. Every day after school, he would rush to a small, dimly lit room in his basement, where an old piano stood as a silent witness to his unwavering determination. The room was humble, with barely enough space for him and the piano, but it was there that he poured his heart and soul into his craft. Hours turned into days, and days into months, with Jack’s fingers bleeding from the constant practice. Despite the pain and exhaustion, he continued to press on, driven by his dream and the belief that one day he would prove them all wrong.
Seeking guidance, Jack turned to a retired pianist in the neighborhood who had once been a renowned performer. The retired pianist, impressed by Jack’s dedication and passion, took him under his wing and provided him with invaluable insights and comments. He taught Jack to refine his skills and technique, helping him to understand the art of performing.

Text 10
As part of my doctor's degree, I decided to take a trip to the Amazon rainforest to explore and learn about the people that live there. I was interested in their way of life and the deep connection they have with the natural world.
As I stepped into the forest, I was immediately shocked by the bright colors and sounds of the rainforest. Then I was greeted by the local people warmly and they offered to take me on a tour of their village. I walked, passing by towering trees and colorful birds. And they showed me how they hunted, fished and searched for food in the forest.
They also took me to pick some plants and told me how they used them for different problems and sicknesses. I also learned about their traditional dances and music, which were an important part of their culture. Above all, I joined a hunt, where I saw their skills and how they were able to survive in such environment. So I returned home with respect and admiration for the local people and their way of life.

The exhibition, featuring various smart inventions, such as driverless cars and smart – home devices, gave visitors a glimpse into the life in the future. Especially impressive was a household robot that could interact with visitors in a remarkably considerate manner, which would make a perfect companion for the elder.
I ' m pretty convinced that many of them will soon find their way into common households. Do you feel like paying a visit with me next time
Yours,
Li Hua
