Gifts for happy gardeners
It s that time of year when shoppers with gardeners in mind think about potential festive
gifts for their green-fingered loved ones. My main advice is to step away from the fancy styles
because the gift ‘sets’ that are often little more than poor quality dressed up as ‘equipment’.
Instead option for something genuinely useful—it need not cost the earth and will be hugely
appreciated. Here are some ideas for you.
Gardening Essentials
Whether you are weeding or cutting branches—it s essential to have a solid carrier for
carrying your trimmings(修枝) to the fertilizer heap or green recycling bin. Town & Country
has a selection of durable and attractive garden baskets. They come in three sizes (15, 25 and
40 litres) and three colours—blue, green and grey. (Square flexi-tub £ 7. 99-£ 12. 99)

2500 comes with a five-year guarantee. (STIGA Bio Silent 2500 £ 249)

Over the past few weeks, I ve been experiencing a bad fall, largely attributed to my ADHD
(多动障碍) drugs running out. This has made it challenging for me to find the motivation to
tackle daily tasks, including regular exercise.
However, a recent workout led to an epiphany: neglecting physical activity was actually
worsening my condition. It appears that engaging in physical activity could be an effective
strategy for managing my ADHD symptoms while I await a prescription refill.
After a workout, my mind feels quieter, much like when I take my medication. This
makes sense as ADHD drugs increase levels of a brain medical called noradrenaline(去甲肾上
腺素), enhancing focus, memory, and impulse control. Exercise also increases this chemical.
英语试卷 第 4 页(共 12 页)
While these insights are promising, I m not ready to stop my medication. Research on
exercise and ADHD has mixed results. A 2023 review of 106 studies showed exercise
significantly improves impulse control, attention, and task-switching in young people with
ADHD. However, its impact on regulating emotions and working memory is less pronounced,
and the benefits are even less for adults. In another study,10 minutes of exercise improved
impulse control in 82 adults with ADHD but had no effect on other symptoms.
These findings suggest that exercise has a modest effect on ADHD but highlight additional
benefits beyond physical health. The evidence is particularly strong for depression and anxiety.
A 2023 review of nearly 300 trials involving over 15, 800 adults found physical activity as
effective as talk therapy and medications in reducing symptoms. The benefit was stronger when
combined with these treatments.
Exercise may also alleviate symptoms of other mental health conditions, such as bipolar
disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It appears protective as well. A 2018 study of over
12 million adults found that those who exercised experienced 43 percent fewer days of poor
mental health than those who didn t. The link was strongest for team sports, cycling, and
aerobic and gym activities.
I m relieved to have found a strategy for managing my ADHD symptoms without
medication. Even though exercising is the last thing I want to do when overwhelmed, I now
realize its importance. The benefits of exercise for mental health are clear, and I m committed
to making it a priority in my life.
24. What does the underlined part “an epiphany” most likely mean in paragraph 2
A. A rush resolution or decision. B. A sense of disappointment.
C. A sudden realization or insight. D. A moment of great happiness.
25. What role does exercise play according to the research findings presented in the passage
A. Exercise is a perfect replacement for ADHD medication.
B. Exercise has no effect on mental health conditions other than ADHD.
C. Exercise can complement medication in managing ADHD symptoms.
D. Exercise benefits physical health more than obsessive-compulsive disorder.
26. Which of the following best describes the author s attitude towards exercise
A. Reluctant but importance-aware. B. Casual but focused.
C. Inconsistent but passionate. D. Negative but disciplined.
英语试卷 第 5 页(共 12 页)
27. What can we learn from the experience with exercise and ADHD
A. Prevention is better than cure.
B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. A healthy outside starts from the inside.
D. The body is a temple; The mind is a palace.

Wanting to squeeze or bite an animal s ears or feet is called cute aggression, and scientists
are trying to understand why we do it.
Cute aggression is a type of dimorphous expression(双模表达), an emotional response in
which a person experiences more than one emotion at the same time. It begins with a stimulus,
saying your dog being cute and sitting with her paws crossed. This prompts an emotional
experience, perhaps feeling overwhelmed by cuteness, and then an expressive behavior. With
dimorphous expressions, the person experiences more than one expressive behavior. They may
show delight at their dog s cuteness, but also announce that their paws are so cute that they
want to eat them. It makes sense that adorable puppy paws can create delight. But having an
urge to bite them feels like a violent impulse that doesn t belong in the moment.
In recent years, scientists have been able to use technology to determine the neural
mechanisms that occur during cute aggression. In a 2018 study in Frontiers in Behavioral
Neuroscience, Meltzofg, an associate professor at the University of California, and her co-
author sought to understand the neural mechanisms associated with cute aggression.
The team recruited 54 volunteers aged between 18 and 40, and connected them to an
electroencephalogram (EEG). The participants then looked at four sets of images. Two sets
featured cute babies and baby animals, while two sets displayed “ less cute” babies and adult
animals. With the EEG, the researchers could measure electrical activity within milliseconds of
it occurring. They found greater activity after images of cute animals were displayed.
In general, people who had greater neural activity after seeing cute kitties were more likely
to report having a dimorphous reaction. Neurologically, Meltzofg says, the findings suggest that
cute aggression involves both the emotion and reward systems. The study also found that people
who are more likely to become overwhelmed with emotions are more likely to experience cute
aggression. The current theory with dimorphous emotions is that the second emotion helps to
manage the overwhelming feelings and even calms the person down.

28. Which behavior is an example of dimorphous expression
A. Enjoying a tragic movie and crying out.
B. Laughing at a joke and feeling delighted.
C. Encountering an accident in a bad mood.
D. Appreciating flowers and wanting to pick them.
29. What do recent studies focus on
A. Repeated occurrence of cute expressions.
B. The impact of technology on human emotions.
C. Different reactions of age groups to cute images.
D. The neural mechanism related to dimorphous expression.
30. How is the study carried out in paragraph 4
A. By reviewing previous studies. B. By analyzing some data.
C. By observing subjects responses. D. By clarifying some points.
31. What do we know about the present study
A. Greater neural activity guarantees cute aggression.
B. Electrical activity in our brain occurs within milliseconds.
C. Cute aggression contributes to regulating people s feelings.
D. People overwhelmed with emotions will experience less cute aggression.

Killer whales hunt fish with sounds as clicks and buzzes—they choose and chase their prey
with sound waves. But a common feature of modern ocean life may be like a salmon s invisible
cloak (隐形斗篷), making the whales favorite meal harder to find. What is to blame Boat
traffic noise.
Ocean noise has been increasing over the years, and an international research team
recently reported in Global Change Biology that when the water got too noisy, whales spent more
time looking for food but caught fewer fish. The study tracked every move and sound that
individual killer whales made, as well as the sound reaching those whales. This is the first time
scientists have linked noise reaching a given killer whale to their foraging(觅食) success, says
lead author Jennifer Tennessen.
英语试卷 第 7 页(共 12 页)
The noise problem is one that Tennessen views as chronic, yet possibly more straightforward
to fix than declining fish populations or pollution—ships could simply slow down to make less
noise. Fortunately, with the guidance of both governmental and nongovernmental groups, some
ship operators are slowing down.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in Canada reported in 2023 that 87 percent of ships
slowed or moved over for southern resident whales in critical habitat, which led to a decrease of
4. 2 decibels (分贝) compared to 2019, before slowdowns began. Washington ports and other
local authorities join in a program of voluntary slowdowns in Washington waters called Quiet
Sound, which offers information on killer whale locations. About 70 percent of ships follow
Quiet Sound s guidelines and voluntarily slow down in killer whale critical habitat.
The talk about innovations in propeller (螺旋桨) technology is also positive. A propeller,
for example, is based on a design for a quieter drone propeller. If claims of a more efficient and
quieter boat propeller are true, that s good news for both reducing fuel use and quieting traffic.
Tennessen says increasing ship noise is a problem in oceans around the world. “ We re
finally able to measure the impacts that it s having on wildlife,” she says, “ and we re finding
that the impacts are numerous. ”
32. Why does the author mention a salmon s invisible cloak
A. To introduce the feature of sound waves.
B. To describe the environment in whales hunting.
C. To emphasize the invisibility of salmons cloak.
D. To demonstrate the characteristic of whales hunting.
33. What do the statistics indicate in paragraph 4
A. Noise reduction is ineffective.
B. Ship operators ignore guidelines.
C. Quiet Sound prioritizes noise monitoring.
D. Voluntary slowdowns lead to noise reduction.
34. What is the significance of propeller technology innovations
A. To address noise issues. B. To reduce fuel efficiency.
C. To follow Quiet Sound s guidelines. D. To help measure influences on wildlife.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Ships Slow Down for Whales
B. Boat Noise Clouds Whale Foraging
C. Killer Whales Battle Noise Pollution
D. Technology Innovations Silence Propellers

The sun was shining brightly during our PE class as we ran laps around the busy
playground. With laughter and cheers all around me, I took a short break near the field s edge
to catch my breath. It was then that I heard a faint mewing sound. Following the sound, I
finally spotted a tiny kitten. It looked scared and hurt, its leg twisted at a strange angle.
“Hey, guys! Come here!” I called out to my classmates. They gathered around, their
faces filled with concern. “ We need to help it,” said Sarah. We all agreed. Carefully, I
picked up the kitten, feeling its tiny body shake in my hands. It was so small and weak.
We decided to seek help from our kind PE teacher, Mr Johnson. “Mr Johnson, we found
this poor kitten, and it seems badly hurt,” I said, holding it out to him. He looked at the
kitten and then at us, a serious expression crossing his face. “Let me call the school nurse Mrs
Thompson,” he said.
Before Mrs Thompson came, we quickly made a makeshift stretcher (临时担架) using a
towel and two sticks, and gently placed the kitten on it with Mr Johnson s direction. A moment
later, Mrs Thompson came running with a first aid kit. As she examined the kitten, we all held
our breath. “ It looks like it has a broken leg,” she said. “ We need to get it to the animal
hospital immediately. ” Mr Johnson nodded and told us to go back to the classroom after the PE
class was over. Then, he and Mrs Thompson took the kitten to the vet.
The rest of the day was a blur. We could only think about the kitten, hoping it would be
fine. Before the school was over, Mr Johnson returned to the classroom with a big smile on his
face. “Good news, kids!” he announced. “ The kitten s surgery was a success. The vet said
that with proper care it would make a full recovery. ”
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Dear David,
I hope this finds you well. I’m thrilled to share my Spring Festival experience, especially after its
UNESCO heritage recognition. This year, I participated in many traditional activities making the festival
unforgettable.
On New Year’s Eve, my family gathered for a reunion dinner, feasting on symbolic dishes like dumplings and fish for prosperity. We decorated our home with red lanterns and couplets to invite joy and repel negativity. During the festival, I joined my grandparents in temple visits to seek blessings and later appreciated the neighborhood lion dance—vibrant performers moved to the rhythm of drums.
Beyond festivities, it’s a cherished time to bond with loved ones, honor traditions, and embrace cultural roots. I’m proud this global acknowledgment preserves our legacy. If you ever visit, I’d love to share this magic with you.
Yours,
Li Hua

Hearing this, we all felt relieved. The classroom erupted in cheers and applause. Sarah clapped her hands, her eyes shining with joy. “We saved a life today!” she exclaimed. I couldn’t help but smile, feeling a warm sense of pride. Mr Johnson praised us for our teamwork and kindness, reminding us that even small actions could make a big difference. We decided to visit the kitten after school to see how it was doing.
In the animal hospital, we saw the recovered kitten. It was resting in a cozy bed, its leg wrapped in a tiny cast. The kitten looked much better, its eyes bright and curious. The vet told us it would need a few weeks to heal completely. “Who will take care of it ” I asked. Mr Johnson smiled and said, “I’ve already spoken to the principal. The school will adopt it, and we can all help take care of it.” We cheered again, knowing the kitten had found a safe home.

议论文 文章介绍了人们在看见可爱的动物时会自然而然心生喜爱之情,但同时也试图“咬它”,产生“侵略”行为,此时表现出来的行为,即为“可爱侵略”。
28.D 细节推断题 根据第二段内容 "With dimorphous expressions, the person experiences more than one expressive behavior. They may show delight at their dog’s cuteness, but also announce that their paws are so cute that they want to eat them."
29. D 细节理解题 根据第三段第一句“In recent years, scientists have been able to use technology to determine the neural mechanisms that occur during cute aggression”可知,近期研究主要关注二模表达相关的神经机制。故选 D。

34. A 推理判断题 根据倒数第二段最后一句 "If claims of a more efficient and quieter boat propeller are true, that's good news for both reducing fuel use and quieting traffic."可知,如果关于更高效、更安静的船用螺旋桨的说法是真的,那么这对于减少燃料使用和降低交通噪音都是好消息。
35 B 标题概括 文章讨论的是噪音声会影响虎鲸捕猎。故选B。

Text 10
A robotic police dog is being used to look for high body temperatures of homeless people at a temporary shelter in Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu. The commercial robot Spot can move like an animal and walk over almost anything a person can. But people concerned about privacy warn that the robot may become a danger to their privacy. It was bought from Boston Dynamics and used at a government homeless shelter near the airport to look for high body temperatures between mealtimes. Supervisor Joseph O’Neal of the Honolulu Police Department said it’s OK to do that. The New York Police Department started using Spot after painting it blue and renaming it “Digidog”. There are about 500 Spot robots in use. Jongwook Kim, the legal director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii, said Spot robots are used by companies to inspect areas with dangerous levels of electricity and also used in building sites, mines and factories. Kim said that there might be some good uses for such machines, but opening the door for police robots to work with the public is not a good idea.
