“It’s the chance for the athletes (运动员) to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, told reporters. “The symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.”
The gold, silver and bronze medals that were awarded at this summer’s Olympic games in Paris caught everyone’s eyes. Each includes a piece of waste iron from the Eiffel Tower.
The Eiffel Tower opened in 1889 and during the later repair work, some of the original (原来的) iron was cut off and kept over time. Now, some of those kept metal pieces have found new homes.
Each new Olympic medal has a piece of Eiffel Tower iron. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形), which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words “Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo (标识), which looks like a flame (火焰) or the face of a woman with a short haircut.
How did they think of such an idea Joachim Roncin head of design (设计) at the Paris Games organizing committee said, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. We said to ourselves, ‘How about getting a bit of the Eiffel Tower to put into the medal ’”
When the Eiffel Tower Operating Company agreed to volunteer pieces of original iron, “the dream came true”, adds Roncin.
The iron pieces are set in recycled silver, gold and bronze disks (磁盘). Over 5,000 medals were made.

Sherry Gao is pouring coffee made from Yunnan beans, hoping that her coffee shop in the city of Pasadena, California introduces you to your new favorite coffee and turns your opinions about Chinese coffee beans upside down.
Much of the Western world buys its coffee from Africa and South America. But Gao hopes that introducing Yunnan-sourced coffee could make customers know about the coffee and help to break down prejudice (打破偏见) against the beans, which for tens of years were mostly used for instant (速溶的) products.
“We wanted to highlight (突出) Chinese coffee because a lot of people never had Chinese coffee before,” Gao said. “Some have the prejudice that it’s bad or cheap. And the turn of the century and the 2010s saw a rapid increase with international companies investing in (投资) the coffee planting. But in the last 10 to 15 years, tastes and need for special and high-grade coffees appeared, especially from local growers and shops. The domestic demand (国内的需求) for China’s-grown coffee has increased so rapidly that Gao says it’s now much more expensive.

Little Effort Makes a Difference
As the saying goes, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Little efforts can indeed make a big difference.
I still remember when I was learning to play the piano. At first, I found it extremely difficult and wanted to give up. But I decided to practice for just 15 minutes every day. Those small efforts added up over time. Eventually, I could play beautiful pieces smoothly.
This experience taught me that every little effort counts. No matter how small it seems, continuous effort can lead to significant achievements. Just like drops of water forming an ocean, our tiny efforts can accumulate and bring about remarkable changes.
In conclusion, as long as we keep making small efforts consistently, we will surely reach our goals and create a better future for ourselves.
