In 1998, at the age of 22, biologist Ximena Velez-Liendo came face-to-face with South America’s Andean bears on her first day of field research in Bolivia. Her life changed forever when she turned around to see “this beautiful, amazing bear coming out of the forest.”
Andean bears are easily recognized by the ring of pale fur (毛皮) that often encircles one or both eyes. Bolivia is home to about 3,000 adult bears, or about one-third of the world’s total Andean bears. The species suffers mainly from habitat loss and conflicts with humans, who sometimes kill the bears when bears destroy crops or hunt livestock (牲畜). Local villagers showed her bear skins hanging in their living rooms, describing how bears were a threat to them.
When another community in Tarija showed her some brand-new bee boxes that people didn’t know how to use, she had an idea: Could selling honey help save bears
Training farmers as beekeepers was increasing in other parts of Bolivia as an eco-friendly way to provide income for rural (乡村的) landowners who might otherwise turn to clearing more forest. Velez-Liendo asked Patricia Sanchez, an economist who had experience teaching beekeeping in Bolivia’s highlands, to join the Andean Carnivore Conservation Program in 2017. The program trains locals how to care for hives (蜂箱), get honey and sell it. It also supports other types of nature-friendly agricultural practices, like fencing (围住) livestock and cutting off branches of fruit trees so they don’t attract bears. In exchange, community members agree to protect the forest and not harm Andean bears.
“If people don’t see the value of protecting an animal, protecting an ecosystem, then they’re not going to do it,” Velez-Liendo says. Today, more than 60 Andean bears move around through Tarija’s forests, a remarkable increase over the five bears documented in 2017. Her goal is to copy Tarija’s model in the Chuquisaca and Cochabamba regions to the north. Attracting more rural communities to join in can provide “stepping stones” of habitat to connect isolated bear populations, she says.
24.What do we know about Andean bears
A.They have grey fur around the eyes.
B.Most of them live mainly in Bolivia.
C.They are listed as an endangered species.
D.They don’t get along well with humans.
25.Why might rural landowners clear more forests
A.To earn much income. B.To get more space.
C.To plant more crops. D.To keep enough bees.
26.Which of the following shows the influence of the program
A.Worrying. B.Fruitless. C.Unclear. D.Effective.
27.What does Velez-Liendo plan to do next
A.Increase locals’ income. B.Set up protection areas.
C.Attract more people to join in. D.Develop economy.

When you picture a farm, do you think of green fields and a big red barn The farms of the future may look very different from that. That’s because farms do not have to be outside anymore. They also won’t have to be above ground. In London, 100 feet below the streets there was a huge empty abandoned space. It was unused for almost 70 years before it was turned into the world’s first underground farm.
Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, founders of the company Growing Underground, thought it would be an ideal spot to build a hydroponic (水栽的) farm. After all, these types of farms are doing well in other indoor spaces.
Founded in 2015, Growing Underground’s farm grows microgreens and salad leaves using hydroponic technology that grows plants in water but not soil. In fact, the company said that its hydroponic technology allows for the perfect pest-free (无害虫的) growing environment.
These methods save 70 percent less water than traditional field agriculture and all the nutrients are kept within a closed circle system. They can grow the greens all year round because they are not affected by weather or growing seasons.
But it is the LED lighting system that is the key to growing food underground. Ballard said, “Already, LEDs allow the growers to change the flavor of the greens, as their sugars and starches develop differently under different light spectrums (光谱).”
Right now, the company only sells greens with a lot of leaves because they are the only crops that grow fast enough to be economically (经济地) feasible but Ballard believes that will change. “As technologies improve, you’ll see soft fruits, cucumbers, peppers,” he said.
The company’s goal is to keep food local. They say that all of the greens can be in your kitchen within four hours of being picked. They currently sell to local restaurants and people who live in London, but they hope to be entering the local retail markets soon.
28.What makes the underground farm possible
A.The perfect environment. B.The great demand for fruits.
C.The hydroponic technology. D.The good weather condition.
29.What is the function of the LED lighting system
A.To get rid of pests. B.To make use of solar energy.
C.To allow greens to grow rapidly. D.To provide various light spectrums.
30.What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 6 probably mean
A.Difficult. B.Common. C.Impossible. D.Achievable.
31.What does the company expect of the underground farm
A.It’ll benefit more customers.
B.It’ll be environment-friendly.
C.It’ll keep food fresher for longer.
D.It’ll introduce more advanced technologies.

Parents often think that their kids should be good at studies and do well in sports. That’s usually the case because parents feel that could help their children go to top colleges. However, Melissa and Mark Wimmer think differently.
Their 14-year-old son, Mike, is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world’s top IQ club. He completed his high school, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees all in three years. That’s not all. He also ran two tech companies, founded a third one that works towards controlling the population of lionfish, an invasive species.
But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills. Melissa told CNBC that people expected “Young Sheldon” before they met her son. Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills. “But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he’s just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things,” said Melissa.
Mark and Melissa got to know about their child’s intelligence when he entered preschool. A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different course to support his fast development. Many parents aren’t comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds, but Mike’s parents saw the value in letting their child go through it. “I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children,” said Melissa.
The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use. “We let him order food when he’s 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment,” said Melissa.
Thanks to his parents, Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.
32.What does the underlined word “prodigy” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.A gifted person. B.A popular student.
C.A wildlife biologist. D.A promising businessman.
33.What can we infer about the child in the show Young Sheldon
A.He likes to make friends. B.He is a well-rounded student.
C.He is a famous child actor. D.He is poor at dealing with people.
34.How did Mark and Melissa discover their child’s high intelligence
A.Through the suggestion from a child psychologist.
B.Through the information provided by his teachers.
C.By taking part in a special educational program.
D.By watching their child’s behavior in preschool.
35.How did Mike’s parents improve his social skills
A.By letting him go to school alone.
B.By placing him in social situations.
C.By encouraging him to speak in class.
D.By teaching him some communication rules.

When was the last time you had to memorize a phone number The chances are that it has been years, given that you can simply use your digital devices to memorize that number for you. In a world of digital information, a new phenomenon “digital amnesia”, which refers to the loss of our brains’ ability to remember information as we become dependent on technology to get data, is starting to spread across the country. 36 .
Establish a screen-free day
Start choosing one day of the week to put away your digital devices. If you need something to wake you up, avoid using your phone, as it’ll likely stimulate you to check your messages before you’re even stepping out of bed. 37 .
38
Instead of depending on your phone, set out to design a reliable workout plan, which uses printed instructions to train your memory. There are several techniques you can use, but whichever ones you choose, physical paper is the key. It allows you to exercise your brain to find the answer within the pages themselves, rather than turning to your phone for help.
Simplify your digital life
There is no denying that digital devices have made our lives extremely convenient. 39 . Although we can try to avoid using digital devices, it is undeniable that we will need them for certain tasks. Simplifying your digital life can help address digital amnesia. Removing what is not necessary can help you be less dependent on your devices.
40 . It can be a very effective tool, but its usefulness, or uselessness, entirely depends on your attitude. You have to learn how to use it correctly so that it doesn’t take over.
