Although Toulla Hadjigeorgiou has always wanted to be an artist, she remembers being told that “it was not a proper profession. ”Yet, her passion for painting emerged at a young age, and her art journey was shaped by her early experiences and the world around her. “At around five years old in primary school, a few kids in my class would want me to draw for them,” she recalls. The vivid pleasant smell of powdered(粉状的)paint mixed with water and the ‘canvas’—paper used to wrap fish and chips—are treasured memories of her early creativity. When her parents gifted her a Reeves Oil Painting Set at age 12, she discovered a new medium. She still uses the palette knife that came with it.
Her medium of choice has developed over the years. “For many years, my medium was oil,” she says, “but today, my style suits both oil and watercolour. ” She appreciates oil, which she finds “forgiving” and ideal or layering, while her approach to watercolour challenges traditional techniques. “I paint layer over layer to produce strong, vivid colour, ” she adds.
Growing up in a family with little interest in art, Toulla faced challenges in pursuing her passion. Nevertheless, she found inspiration in the works of old masters like Canaletto and Vermeer, noting that “some influence came from personally studying the technical skill of traditional art.”
Now, living in the countryside, her surroundings move her art. “I am inspired to paint more landscapes, farm life and animals,” she shares. Her travels also play a significant role in her work, as she seeks out quieter places for reference.
Toulla aims to catch the nature of her subjects, motivating viewers to reflect on the stories behind the scenes she paints. “I want them to consider what the people in a scene are experiencing,” she explains. By staying true to her artistic vision and avoiding trends, she creates distinctive works that sing praises to the beauty of everyday life.
24. What can we learn about Toulla from paragraph 1
A. She followed others' footprints. B. She painted with materials at hand.
C. She was modelled after by other kids. D. She was sensitive to the smell of paint.
25. Why does Toulla integrate watercolour into her painting
A. To meet viewers' needs. B. To compare the two media.
C. To popularize her painting methods. D. To better her works' expressiveness.
26. What kept Toulla's passion for painting as she grew up
A. Professional training. B. Exploring great artworks.
C. Travels to different places. D. Inspiring ideas from fellows.
27. Which best reflects Toulla's painting philosophy
A. Choices of painting subjects come first. B. Art is a celebration of daily life's essence.
C. Pursuing trends is critical for creative works. D. Works should reflect painters' inner emotions.
C
Imagine a world where food security relies on just a few crops. This is not fiction but our current path. Agricultural biodiversity—the lifeblood of flexible ecosystems—is collapsing due to climate change, habitat destruction, and industrial farming. Over 75% of plant genetic diversity has disappeared in a century, with just nine species now dominating global crop production. Such reliance on uniform crops leaves food systems open to pests, diseases, and climate extremes.
Genetic diversity acts as a natural barrier against environmental changes. Different crop varieties respond differently to stressors, providing farmers with options to manage risks. When one crop fails, others can compensate, helping to safeguard harvests and livelihoods. However, as the diversity on our farms drops, farmers have fewer tools to adapt to the growing challenge brought on by environmental change.
The fall brings numerous consequences, and human health suffers as well. Global diets now center on energy-rich but nutrient-poor food, resulting in 11 million annual diet-related deaths. And reduced access to diverse fruits and vegetables worsens malnutrition(营养不良)globally.
Turning the trend around requires a multi-aspect approach that combines conservation, sustainable farming practices, and scientific innovation. Central to these efforts is the conservation of genetic resources—the seeds, genes, and living organisms that sustain our food systems. The global genebank network developed by CGIAR conserves over 700, 000 accessions of more than 3000 locally important and less well-known plant species. Sending samples out to thousands of requesters worldwide every year, it brings diversity back into communities, fields, and landscapes. We ourselves also need to bring biodiversity back into our fields. Agroecological practices, such as crop alternation, intercropping, and agroforestry, capitalize on the power of biodiversity to enhance soil health, control pests, and improve water use efficiency.
Biodiversity is our insurance against environmental uncertainty. But like any insurance, it only works if we maintain it. Today's choices determine tomorrow's food recovery capacity. By boosting conservation and innovation, we can safeguard the genetic foundation of our survival. The seeds of the future are in our hands—let them thrive.
28. What is discussed regarding global agriculture
A. The decline of agricultural biodiversity. B. The mismatch of food supply and demand.
C. The lack of advanced agricultural technology. D. The overuse of chemical fertilizers in farming.
29. What does the underlined word “compensate” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Suffer from the risk. B. Speed up the recovery.
C. Make up for the loss. D. Increase the diversity.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The role of CGIAR. B. Impacts of farming practices.
C. Measures to increase biodiversity. D. The importance of genetic diversity.
31. What does the author agree with
A. Immediate human action is vital. B. Future global food supply is assured.
C. Buying insurance for crops is a must. D. Traditional genetic seeds are hard to survive.
D
Previously thought to be an exclusively human skill, knowing when a friend could use a clue appears to be a talent we share with our primate (灵长类) cousins. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland observed bonobos (倭黑猩猩)in a recent study point human experimenter in the direction of treats they wished to swallow up.
In the study's experiments, three male bonobos took turns to play a game with an experimenter where treats were hidden under upturned cups—sometimes while the experimenter was watching, and sometimes not. If the experimenter found the treat, it would be given to the bonobo, providing a motivation for the bonobos to share what they knew.
The experiments showed the bonobos were more likely to gesture and to point more quickly at the cup hiding the treat when the experimenter didn't know which cup hid the treat. It seems like a simple action, but it's actually a new insight into how our closest relatives can think and assess the perspective of others. Previous studies have observed the bonobos warning their companions of danger, but these recent experiments remove elements of group mentality and survival ability, exploring cognitive functions of individuals.
“The ability to sense gaps in one another's knowledge is at the heart of our most advanced social behaviors, central to the ways we cooperate, communicate, and work together strategically,” says psychologist Chris Krupenye.
“What we've shown here is that bonobos will communicate with a partner to change their behavior, but a key open question for further research is whether they are also pointing to change their partner's mental state or their beliefs,” says psychologist Luke Townrow. This theory of mind—the capacity to understand that others have mental states of belief or perspective that might be different to one's own—has typically been thought to distinguish human cognition from that of other animals.
32. What is a task of the experimenter
A. Monitor the treats. B. Pick out the cup with treats.
C. Signal to the bonobos. D. Hide the treats under a cup.
33. In which aspect did bonobos react differently in the experiments
A. The eagerness of their gestures. B. The responses to getting the treats.
C. The flexibility of their movements. D. The use of their different body parts.
34. What's the finding of the study
A. Bonobos can warn others of danger. B. Bonobos have a sense of community.
C. Bonobos are good at using body language. D. Bonobos can judge others' state of knowledge.
35. What key question will the further study explore about bonobos
A. How they form their perspectives. B. How they communicate with others.
C. Whether they can influence others' mind. D. Whether they can develop mental beliefs.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为 多余选项。
Most of us have been put on the spot in a number of different situations, whether at work or among a group of friends. 36 However, you just aren't ready to give, whether it's because you don't know or you're not willing to share. It is really embarrassing
We've all been guilty of putting others on the spot ourselves, usually by accident. Perhaps we ask a sensitive question of a friend in a group setting, or try to push a quiet coworker to share their answers in a meeting. 37
Putting someone on the spot though, whether intentional or not, has the effect of destroying trust in a relationship. The key to maintaining the trust in a relationship is developing your emotional intelligence. 38 As Krauss wrote in a recent Psychology Today article, “A sign that you're not as sensitive as you could be when you pressure people is that others try to stay away from you to the extent that they can.”
39 Are people born with the ability to develop a high level of emotional intelligence, or is that something they are taught Although the answer is probably a little bit of both, strengthening your emotional intelligence is definitely something we can all do. 40 Listening, empathizing(共情), and reflecting are strategies that many of us have developed with time to strengthen our emotional intelligence, whether with the help of a professional or through our own trial-and-error.
A. People are fed up with the dull and long wait.
B. It can help us understand and handle a confusing situation.
C. Even, we just want to make someone we don't like uneasy.
D. A core part of that is being able to perceive how others feel.
E. A set of eyes turn toward you with the expectation for an answer.
F. Many of us have got more emotionally intelligent as we get older.
G. There is a debate on whether emotional intelligence is native or not.

It was one of those freezing nights we got here in Minnesota in the middle of winter. The dampness in the air got trapped and a curtain of fog sank all around, mixing with the snow on the ground and the strong snow falling from the sky to white out everything. Normally I wouldn't drive in that kind of weather, but I'd been at a Tupperware party all evening, and I was so exhausted. The desire to be in the comfort of my own home beat my better judgment. However never had I imagined my little act could save my life on such a night
I was only on the road for a minute before I regretted my decision not to stay put. The winding country road was totally deserted. My car's headlights could barely cut through the heavy fog. The snow was getting heavier. A lot heavier. Everything beyond a few feet in front of me was a mystery. I drove slowly. I wasn't quite sure where I was, though I knew there were railways specifically built for freight(货运) trains in this area. But in such weather, it was impossible to spot the tracks or any signs of an approaching train.
Trembling with cold, I turned up the heat. The loud blowers did their work, sheltering me from the bitter cold and the sound outside. Seemingly, everything went smoothly as I inched forward.
All at once, my headlights shone on a small animal in front of me, right at the farthest point they could reach. I hit the brakes-tires screeched(发嘎吱声)against the snow as the car was coming to a stop. When the world stopped spinning, taking a closer look, I found it was a brown rabbit, its fur covered with ice crystals in the headlights. I tapped the horn, no response. I tried again, yet the little creature remained rooted-it appeared unwilling to get out of the way. Curiously, I got out of the car and made my way toward it
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Getting near, I found its leg stuck in a trap. Just as I was freeing the rabbit from the trap, a train whooshed(呼啸)by.

One possible version:
Dear David,
I'm truly honored to have participated in the stage play based on Chinese stories last week and deeply appreciate your trust in my work.
The event was a remarkable cultural success, serving as a gateway to Chinese wisdom. Timeless stories like Yugong Moves Mountains and Confucius were masterfully presented. Meaningful dialogues were skillfully integrated with vivid storytelling performances. The ink- brush stage design, traditional costumes and actors' expressiveness combined to create an unforgettable artistic feast.
As a co-writer, I suggest inviting foreign enthusiasts of Chinese culture to cooperate on future plays. Their insights could help reinterpret classics, enhancing the stories' global appeal while ensuring cultural authenticity. I am eagerly expecting our next journey of sharing China's stories through stage play!
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
Getting near, I found its leg stuck in a trap. Its eyes locked onto mine—wide and desperate, and its nose twitched in panic, as if begging for help. Despite the freezing wind biting through my coat, I knelt down. "Hold on, "I whispered, trying to loosen the trap with numb fingers. The little creature stopped struggling, staring at me with a mix of fear and hope. My gloves were already wet, but I ignored. I determined to save this little life, forgetting about everything around.
Just as I was freeing the rabbit from the trap, a train whooshed(呼啸)by. The fog swirled, and the train's dark shape with faint light was briefly visible before disappearing into the heavy fog, leaving only the steam behind. In that split second, I realized: had I not stopped for the rabbit, my car would have been on those hidden tracks. My heart pounded violently. After pulling myself together, I finally loosened the trap and the rabbit hopped away. As I continued my way home, the snowfall grew lighter. A quiet smile crept across my face, as delicate as the diminishing flakes. This encounter became a constant reminder that in a world with uncertainties, kindness has its own reward.

It's time to prove a common Olympics myth wrong: To make it, you need to start as a kid.
In reality, some athletes at the Paris Olympics didn't discover their sport until later in life. British rower Helen Glover started training at age 21.
