I took a trip to visit New York with my dad after graduating from high school. One of the places on his list for us to visit was a “rare violin shop”. We made our way down the crowded streets and stopped in front of a tall building.
This building was not what I had pictured. I’d been imagining a street-level shop, open to the public, with some interesting and older violins on display. As we walked inside, we were greeted by a receptionist who asked if we had an appointment, since they were by appointment only. I wanted the ground to swallow me whole and decided to give up the visit. However, my dad eagerly told her, “No, we didn’t but, my daughter plays the violin with her high school orchestra. And we would love to just pop inside and browse! Don’t mind us!”
The receptionist gave him an odd look but excused herself to talk to a well-dressed man, who told us that since he had no other appointments right now, he would love to give us a tour.
The starting price for a violin here, we found out, was 10 thousand dollars. He showed us around a very private-feeling and swanky-looking condo (奢华的工作间) , pointing out a room where he casually mentioned he would chat with Joshua Bell when he came by. My jaw was on the floor the entire time.
At the end, the man picked up a Stradivarius and asked me to play a string while he held it. And he triumphantly said, “There! Now you’ve played a Stradivarius.”
I don’t remember the man’s name, but meeting him is a real stroke of luck for me and I’m grateful that he decided to show a no-appointment, non-customer visitor around. His warm behavior helped inspire me to continue pursuing my instrument after high school!
4. What kind of violin shop had the author expected to visit
A. Tall and magnificent. B. Mysterious and odd.
C. Popular and fascinating. D. High-end and professional.
5. How did the author feel after being greeted by a receptionist
A. Proud. B. Embarrassed. C. Guilty. D. Depressed.
6. According to Paragraph 4, what might Joshua Bell be
A. A receptionist. B. A celebrity. C. A salesman. D. A shopkeeper.
7. What can be concluded from the passage
A. The shop overprices its customers. B. Stradivarius is a mass-market brand.
C. The author enjoys her visit to the shop. D. The well-dressed man is a great violinist.

The pleasure people get from a piece of music has been linked to its effects on our emotional responses and ability to form social connections. The degree of enjoyment differs from person to person, but little is known about why. To see if genetics (遗传学) can account for it, Giacomo Bignardi at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands and his colleagues conducted a new study.
The researchers looked at more than 9,000 twins from the Swedish Twin Registry. About 3,400 were identical (同卵的) and 5,600 non-identical. The former share the same genome (基因组), while non-identical twins share only half their genomes, which enabled the researchers to determine the effects of genes through comparison. Besides, all the twins in the study were raised in the same households and so grew up with similar environmental influences. This made it easier to sort out genetic contributions.
The researchers got the twins to complete the Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire, which focused on how much pleasure they get from music. For example, they were asked the extent to which they agreed with statements such as “when I share music with someone I feel a special connection with that person” and “in my free time I hardly listen to music”. The result showed that genes seem to play a significant role in influencing how much pleasure music brings, with the identical twins being more than twice as similar in this feature as the non-identical ones.
“While it’s fairly understandable that musical ability might have a genetic basis, which provides an easy explanation for why some people seem to have a talent for music, it’s obscure that the degree of pleasure from listening to music is influenced by genes, so it is inspiring that the study finds this effect,” says Peter Harrison at the University of Cambridge.
However, Nick Collins at Durham University, UK thinks differently. “Certain musical abilities and preferences may be influenced by genetics, but there are a large number of cultural elements in music development that are not addressed by genetics alone,” he says.
8. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. How twins contribute to the progress of genetic research.
B. Why the researchers chose the twins as research subjects.
C. What makes the new study different from previous ones.
D. What inspired the researchers to conduct the new study.
9. What is the finding of the new study
A. The secret of musical talent lies in our genes.
B. Our genes determine what kind of music we like.
C. Our genes can influence how much we enjoy music.
D. The pleasure that different people get from music varies greatly.
10. Which can best replace the underlined word “obscure” in paragraph 4
A. easy to conclude. B. reasonable to assume.
C. impossible to prove. D. difficult to see.
11. What is Nick Collins’ attitude towards the research finding
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.

A night at the movies is always a good idea. But when you leave the theater and realize you just dropped $45 on a ticket and some snacks you’ll wish you had been patient enough to wait until the movie came out on Netflix. The average movie ticket price in the United States in 2000 was $5.39; now, a ticket is over $9.
The main reason that movie tickets have gotten so expensive is because of inflation (通货膨胀). It was actually more expensive to go to the movies in the 70s than it is now. A ticket in 1978 cost $2.34. If you plug that into an inflation calculator, the same ticket would cost you $9.46 today. According to the National Association of Theater Owners, the average cost for a ticket today is $9.11.
Another reason you need to spend some of your life savings to see a movie on the big screen is that theaters are competing with streaming services that produce their own films, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. And let’s be honest, sitting at home on your sofa or in your bed is more comfortable than sitting in a cold theater.
Because of streaming technology, theaters have to do something to bring in customers. Attractions—including alcohol, reclining seats (躺椅), surround sound, and 3-D movies are all examples of that. And those upgrades come at a price, leading to more expensive tickets.
“There’s all that extra cost, and it’s really important for theater owners and companies to make that experience as enjoyable as possible,” Patrick Corcoran, vice president of the National Association of Theatre Owners told Marketplace. “Because you’re offering a superb experience—audience expectations are for the latest and greatest technology. Audiences are willing to pay more for a particular experience.”
12. According to the passage, what makes movie tickets so expensive
A. The viewers are wealthier than before.
B. The movie theatres offer popcorns, alcohol for free.
C. Inflation has made the ticket price appear higher than before.
D. The popular movies with famous stars deserve the high price.
13. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. Netflix is always a better choice for movie viewers than theatres
B. with comfortable seats, theatres are more attractive than streaming services
C. the viewers actually pay more for the updates of the movie theatres
D. the theater owners and companies update the theaters to make the theatres famous
14. Which of the following would Patrick Corcoran most probably agree with
A. It’s unwise for viewers to pay so much to watch a movie in the theater.
B. The high price of a movie ticket is supposed to agree with a wonderful experience.
C. It’s a waste of money to provide the latest technology in the theatre.
D. The viewers would prefer to sit at home on the sofas or in the beds.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Behind the Increasing Price of Movie Tickets
B. Technological Improvement on Movie Theatres
C. The Competition between Movie Theatre and Streaming Services
D. How to Save the Viewers’ Wallets

Since I sometimes watch movies and write reviews, I decided to draw up some kind of a plan for writing reviews.
·___16___ The title of the movie must be present in the title since this is a keyword. But the “Interstellar movie review” headline is really boring. There should be some intrigue (神秘气氛) in the title, at least a little. Let’s say “Interstellar or separation from daughter for 30 years”.

· Add emotions. ___19___ A review written with emotion is much more interesting than boring and static (静态的) facts. So make notes for yourself and record what you like and what causes dissatisfaction when you watch a movie.
It is very interesting to write a review of a movie and it is not so difficult. ___20___ Just give it a try, you will definitely have a great review!

In a small town, there lived a young girl named Emily. She had a deep passion for table tennis and dreamed of becoming a professional player. Despite her young age, she was determined to work hard and make her dream come true.
From the moment when Emily picked up a table tennis paddle, she was impressed by the sport. She spent every spare moment practicing her shots, focusing on her footwork and mastering different techniques. Each time she stepped on the court, she was eager to improve and pushed herself to the limit. Unluckily, Emily faced a visual impairment (缺陷) that threatened to slow her progress. She was born with a condition that affected her sight. Some people doubted her ability to play table tennis and said, “Emily, your impairment is a disadvantage. It is impossible to play table tennis well!”
But Emily refused to let their doubts consume her. With solid determination, Emily turned her impairment into strength. She used her other heightened senses to her advantage, relying on touch and sound to anticipate her opponents’ moves. While others relied on sight, she developed an incredible sense of intuition (直觉) and strategy.
Emily finally excelled in table tennis, achieving incredible milestones and representing her town in many competitions. She became an advocate of the sport in her town. However, Emily decided not to settle for winning in her comfort zone but to challenge for something higher. She joined a training team guided by a world-class coach, which brought together the world’s top table tennis players.
In the training team, Emily went through a series of trials. She carried out high-intensity training. She needed to improve not only the batting skills but also perseverance and the sense of teamwork. Her coach often encouraged her and said, “Anyone, regardless of ability, could find success.”
A few years later, Emily’s efforts paid off. She got her chance. As a member of the national team, she took part in an important international competition. That was the stage for her to show her skills, and it was also the important moment for her to realize her dream.
