Ever since I started my calligraphy business two years ago, I've been on social. media every single day without any break. Social media, and especially Instagram, has been essential for running my business because I use it to promote my products and services, stay in contact with possible customers, and create content helping calligraphers grow their businesses.
I had been ignoring other parts of my life, like my family, friends, and my mental well-being, so a break was long overdue. My mom hadn't been doing so well in terms of her mental health, so I wanted to take some time to support her more. I wanted to take some time off Instagram to reflect and plan for the future. I was chatting with strangers and possible customers on social media way more than with actual friends. That made me sad and defeated.
So, what could be done I decided to delete(卸载) Instagram from my phone and only used the PC version to check up on what my customers were doing for a month. Now that it's been a month, I want to share some things that I've learned.
During this month off Instagram, I realized that there was so much-more in life than following people and sharing things on social media. Don't get me wrong — I love learning about what others are doing through their stories and posts, and I know that creating content is a part of how - I can grew my business — but I had totally forgotten that I had actual hobbies of my own.
I'm a huge fan of social media for many reasons, but I just don't think the way I was using it. was healthy. It's difficult to find a balance, but I'm going to try anyway. I know that this one month off Instagram was healthy for me. I'm going back, but it's going to be different. And I feel good about going. back!

Turning 18 is a big deal when you are a teenager. It means you are responsible for yourself and don't need your parents' permission anymore. However, there are lots of opinions about when one becomes an adult. Some are based on science, while others are personal opinions.
While currently the age is 18; . science supports 25 as a more sensible age for adulthood, and I agree. While studying the brain of teenagers, scientists have learned that when kids are around 18, their prefrontal cortex (前额皮层) is only halfway developed. The prefrontal cortex helps people set and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and adapting accordingly. That halfway development means that you still have things to learn and your brains still have time to develop until the age of 25.
Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify you as an adult, while others may believe having a steady income and being able to afford to live on your own are what make you an adult. Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide support; there are situations where you are forced to become an“adult” whether you like it or not.
In the foster care(寄养) system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no longer receive state-sponsored support. These children are forced into a life where they have no family or anyone to support them other than those who were there for them in the system.
Having a quality job will allow you to supply yourself with necessary things to live and help you become a more mature and responsible person. Also, going through difficult times and realizing life isn't as easy as it seems, should qualify someone as an adult.
56. What is the author's attitude toward considering 25 as an age for adulthood
A. Cautious. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
57. How does the prefrontal cortex work to help people set and achieve goals
A. By dealing with received signals and responding accordingly.
B. By collecting information from other parts of the body.

D. By transporting sensed emotions and making records.

A. Families. B. Children in the foster system.

Lawrence Ganti from the US has lived in Switzerland, Japan, and India. When his work with Merck, a company that develops treatments for many of the world's most challenging diseases, first took him to Japan, he was struck by how comfortable his Japanese co-workers were with silence. During meetings in the US, people are usually uneasy with quiet and fill a quiet period with talk. Not so in Japan. “You don't break the silence unless you have something important to say,” says Ganti. Surprisingly, when he next lived in India, he found conversations were typically lively, loud and full of interruptions (打岔). “Silence is never expected,” he says.
The Japanese value the-building of trust and relationships, Ganti adds. In Japan, nothing might be accomplished(完成) in the first meeting, and no real progress may be made until the parties sit down for a lunch or dinner. Ganti remembers greeting foreigners who flew to Japan with the intention of holding their meeting and flying out that same day. “It's just a half-hour discussion,” they told him. He replied, “That half-hour discussion won't go anywhere.”
Cyrus Sabouti from New Jersey, the US, had similar experiences in the Middle East. He lives in Bahrain, where he works for American Express Middle East. “Meetings can require personal introductions, which often consume more of the meeting than the things to be discussed,” he says. He was frustrated by this custom when he first moved to the island nation. “You eventually learn that it is hard to draw the line between business and personal life,” he says. “Warm and friendly relationships can be the difference between a deal or no deal with the Bahraini.”
Ganti's current job with Merck takes him throughout Latin America. While each country presents its own cultural puzzle to figure out, Ganti has found that cultures have a lot in common. In many parts of Latin America, for instance, giving straight advice or criticism in conversation isn't typical. To make a point, he did just that in meetings, and attendees were often shocked. “I'm usually sent to places where change is needed,” Ganti says. “You have to make changes.”
61. How do Indians differ from the Japanese according to Ganti
A. They easily accept silence. B. They usually talk excitedly.
C. They dislike being interrupted. D. They seem nervous in business meetings.
62. What had the foreigners going to Japan expected according to paragraph 2
A. They would be invited to dinner. B. They could leave Japan the next day.
C. They could get their tasks done soon. D. They would have a very interesting meeting.
63 What upset Sabouri when he first worked in Bahrain
A. Work is more important than life there. B. Personal introductions are often ignored.
C. There are a lot of long business meetings. D. Bahrainis value relationships very highly.
54. What does Ganti find about many Latin Americans
A. They are generally willing to accept new ideas.
B. They like to solve puzzles in their spare time.
C. They seldom express their views directly.
D. They hardly ever make comments on others.
65. The author writes the text mainly to ______.
A. talk about some cultural differences
B. introduce his working experience in Latin America
C. give some facts about Japanese etiquette(礼仪、礼节)
D. discuss American's impression on Middle East
五、阅读表达:(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
Japanese bookseller Yoshiyuki Morioka has come up with a highly unusual concept (理念) for a bookstore — he sells one book at a time in a tiny shop located in Ginza, Tokyo's luxury shopping district. Ever since he started the store in May, he has stocked copies of only one title per week.
You might think that it's hardly a bookstore if you can't go in and spend at least a few hours looking through hundreds of books, but Morioka never planned to create a classic bookstore. It's like a weekly ‘suggested reading’ service — you just go in and pick up the book chosen for the week, relieving(减轻) yourself of the burden of choice. Morioka said he came up with the idea —— a store that only focused on one book at a time, after organizing several book-launch events at his old bookstore.
“Before opening this bookstore in Ginza, I had been running another one for 10 years,” Morioka said. “There, I had around 200 kinds of books, and used to organize several book launches per year. During such events, a lot of people visited the store to look for a single book. Therefore, after some time, I started to believe that perhaps with only-one book, a bookstore could be managed.”
The store itself is very small, with a small table in the center displaying the title of the week. According to Morioka, his concept has an obvious advantage. “For example, when selling a book on flowers, the store could exhibit a flower that actually appears in the book,” he said.
It isn't clear how Morioka goes about choosing which books to display and sell. However, his concept has met with great favor—— he claims to have sold over 2,000 books within only one month.

One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I’m glad to offer you some advice on how to make a plan. Making a specific plan for your life and study is a good way to improve yourself. The plan can work as a reminder of your goals and keep you focused on what you truly value. To make the plan effective, you need to establish short-term and long-term goals for study and figure out what you need to do for each subject. Then prioritize the tasks and divide up available time. Also, set aside time for relaxing activities and physical exercise. Most importantly, once your plan is made, stick to it!
I sincerely hope what I have said can be of some help to you.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Jin
