Every summer, thousands of swamp sparrows (沼泽麻雀) sing songs in the North America's wetlands. These special brown birds only know a few songs, but they sing them very well. In fact, their song list hasn't changed much for hundreds of years.
Like humans, baby swamp sparrows learn songs from their elders. "Swamp sparrows just make few mistakes when they learn their songs." says biologist Robert Lachlan. Actually, they copy the music so well that it stays the same from the elder to the young.
"Just like children, the sparrows don't remember every song they hear," Lachlan says. "They just pick up the songs they hear most often. It's an example of what scientists call ‘conformist bias'." Until recently, this learning ability was thought to be special only to humans.
Between 2008 and 2009, Lachlan's team recorded the songs of 615 swamp sparrows across the northeastern United States. The study found that only 2% of these sparrows sang a different song, while the other sparrows sang songs just from their list. "The song-types that you hear in the wetland of North America today may have been there 1,000 years ago." says Lachlan.
However, another team found that a few sparrows changed their song list in recent years. Now scientists are exploring the influence of losing habitat (栖息地) on songbirds. Man-made barriers—such as cities, roads and plantations—can break up a bird population into a number of isolated (孤立的) groups. It stops birds from sharing their songs with each other.
"The findings are really exciting." says scientist Andrew Farnsworth. He hopes that future research will start from these studies. For example, scientists might learn how other animals keep their cultural traditions alive. Farnsworth adds, "It's really cool to think this could happen in other animals too."
19.What is special about swamp sparrows
A.They can sing many songs. B.They learn songs from humans.

Julie Andersen's great interest in diving (潜水) led to her love for sharks and the ocean. She turned her love into a job and started ocean conservation groups. Conservation is the act of keeping or protecting something. Conservation work includes protecting art, animals in danger and the other parts of the natural environment.
Andersen began diving in 1995. She started diving in places that are famous for sharks. Unluckily, the number of sharks there became smaller and smaller. Soon she realized that she must do something for them. So she founded the Shark Angels and helped people around the world learn about sharks. She even sold her house to support Shark Angels.
Twenty years later, she is still working. As a leader of Professional Association of Diving Instructors(PADI), Andersen believes PADI is a good industry to encourage people to keep on saving sharks and their ocean homes. She often says, "I am filled with hope. The past several years have taught me that a single person can make a difference. And I am sure we can make a bigger difference together." Andersen sets a good example to other people in the world. Now more and more people are entering the diving industry and getting to know the importance of protecting sharks and their ocean homes.
Actually, Andersen's goal is to make it possible for everyone to experience, fall in love with and, in turn, protect our world's largest and most valuable ecosystem (生态系统). "The ocean gives us life. We need to do the same in return and leave our blue planet better than we found it." Andersen says.

About twenty years ago, the tiny Sikkim carried out an experiment to end pesticides (杀虫剂) on every farm in the state, a move which didn't happen before in India and probably the world.
The change was especially important for India, where progress in agriculture was shown by the introduction of chemical fertilizers (肥料) and pesticides. But with the use of pesticides, people will come an increase in cancer rates in industrial farming areas. Rivers and soil became polluted and infertile. Sikkim's leaders said they were driven to go all-organic (有机的) by those concerns and because pesticide residues (残渣)—including some chemicals not allowed in other countries—were polluting fish, vegetables and rice.
In the years since the change to organic farming, Sikkim has stopped using pesticides and chemical fertilizers, which helped farmers in making about 190,000 acres (英亩) of organic farmland and prevented the import of many non-organic vegetables from other states. The change has not always been easy: some farmers have complained that their crop production has decreased and that they haven't gotten enough support from the government.
Demand for organic food is high in India and growing fast. Concern about pesticides and desire for organic food are encouraging a market that is growing 25 percent a year, more than 16 percent globally, according to a study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India. The country's market for packaged organic products was nearly 8 million dollars now and was expected to top 12 million dollars by 2020, the study showed. "This is a big moment for India," said Radha Mohan Singh, the country's Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
So far the government has accepted Sikkim and organic farming throughout India, putting about 119 million dollars into supporting farmers all over the country. "The approach Sikkim has started will be used by the whole world tomorrow," Sikkim's chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling said, "This is our choice!"
27.Why did the Indian state of Sikkim stop using pesticides gradually
A.Because pesticides were harmful to soil, crops and other living things.
B.Because people there made no progress by using pesticides.
C.Because people learned this lesson from other countries.
D.Because the Indian government ordered people to do so.
28.How is the organic farming going in Sikkim
A.The change to organic farming is the most difficult.
B.Crop production on organic farming has increased.
C.Not all the farmers in Sikkim like organic farming.
D.Indian government still has not accepted the organic farming.
29.What does the numbers in Paragraph 4 show
A.The country's market for organic products are decreasing.
B.The plan for organic products has changed many times.
C.The study on organic products is encouraging.
D.Organic products has a big market in India.
30.What is Pawan Kumar Chamling's attitude towards Sikkim's organic farming
A.Unsatisfied. B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.
