“Hi, Mrs. Grady,” said Mark when their neighbor opened her door. “Would you like us to shovel your sidewalk and driveway ” Shoveling was Jamie’s idea, a way to the new Ocean Kingdom video game that came out the next day.
Mrs. Grady touched her hand to her heart. “That would be wonderful, boys. I think the job is getting to be too much for me.”
“It will cost 10 dollars,” Jamie said.
“If that’s OK,” Mark added.
“Oh dear,” Mrs. Grady sounded disappointed, “I haven’t been able to get to the bank. I can offer homemade cookies, but I realize that’s not what you had in mind.”
Mark was going to say that Mrs. Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off. “We’ll come back later.” ①
As they struggled through the snow out of Ms. Grady’s driveway, Mrs. Grady stood at her window, watching them.
At the same time, Mark was confused. She didn’t look like the person who’d come to his rescue last summer when Mr. Dunn’s dog, Goldie, escaped from her backyard. ② Goldie had just wanted to play, but Mark didn’t feel comfortable around big dogs. And Goldie had boxed him in between the wooden fence and cedar hedge (雪松树篱).
③ Then Mrs. Grady’s front door had flown open. She must have seen him from across the street. “Hold on, Mark. I’m coming!” Her apron had flapped in the wind like a banner as she strode across the street holding a kitchen broom. “Goldie!” she’d called. As soon as Goldie had turned her head, Mrs. Grady had slipped between Mark and the dog. She wasn’t much taller than Mark, but she’d stood firm as a rock in front of him. “Goldie, go home!” Then she’d swept her broom to hurry the dog along. “Get!” Goldie had obeyed. ④
When Mark’s father had appeared, he’d said to Mrs. Grady, “That’s very brave! Thank you!”
Mrs. Grady had laughed. “It was nothing. Good neighbors watch out for each other, don’t they ”
And now Mrs. Grady needed Mark as much as he’d needed her last summer. He smiled and waved at Mrs. Grady, then thrust his shovel deep into the snow.
“Hey!” Jamie shouted. “What are you doing ” Mark couldn’t explain about Goldie and watching out for neighbors. “I like Mrs. Grady’s cookies.” he said.
26. Mrs. Grady sounded disappointed mostly because ______.
A. she couldn’t afford to pay Mark and Jamie
B. Mark and Jamie wanted to get paid for shoveling
C. she realized Mark and Jamie disliked her cookies
D. Mark and Jamie wanted the money for a video game

C. Birds of a feather flock together. D. Actions speak louder than words.

Whether you’re up for a Crocodile Dundee’s adventure or you’d just like a taste of the Australian sun, the beaches in and around Sydney can offer you all that and more.
Sydney Beach Sydney Beach is located at Sydney’s northernmost tip on an extension of land ending at Palm Beach. Before checking out the golden sand, take a quick tour of the houses of the millionaires from the art and film industries.
Palm Beach Only about an hour from downtown Sydney, Palm Beach offers a long stretch of clean sand and water. With parking near the center of the beach, the rest of it is left as a peaceful location with a sparse population, from which you can go surfing. But be careful: without the huge crowds of other Sydney beaches, Palm Beach doesn’t afford quite the safety level to be found elsewhere; volunteer lifesavers are on duty only on weekends and holidays.
Bondi Beach For the big-name beach, Bondi Beach has to be your choice. Parking is difficult to find even on slow days, so consider taking public transport to this world-known beach in the castern Sydney suburbs. Easily reachable by taxi, bus, and rail, Bondi Beach offers sun bathing, swimming, snorkeling, and all sorts of water sports fun. If you’re in the mood for a bit of exercise, two scenic coastal walks will afford you great views and sights along the shore. Take in views from Mackenzie’s Point. It starts at Bondi and heads south to Bronte Beach. But don’t try to swim in Mackenzie’s Bay — it holds dangers such as hidden rocks.
Bronte Beach Your second choice for a scenic coastal walk covers a little under two miles and takes you from Bronte Beach to Waverly Cemetery, where many famous Australians are buried, including poets Henry Kendall, Doreothea Mackellar, and Henry Lawson.
30. Which of the following shows the right order of the beaches lined from the south to the north
A. Palm Beach — Sydney Beach — Bronte Beach — Bondi Beach
B. Bronte Beach — Bondi Beach — Palm Beach — Sydney Beach
C. Sydney Beach — Palm Beach — Bondi Beach — Bronte Beach
D. Bondi Beach — Bronte Beach — Palm Beach — Sydney Beach
31. The underlined word “sparse” probably means ______.
A. large B. thick C. thin D. crowded
32. What can we learn from the passage
A. If you want to visit Palm Beach, the airplane is your best choice.
B. If you want to enjoy a walk, you can choose Bondi Beach or Bronte Beach.
C. If you want to visit the famous people’s tombs, you can choose Sydney Beach.
D. If you want to swim in Palm Beach, the safer time is on weekdays and holidays.
(C)
Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning experiences increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.
33 What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1
A. Stories for children are easy to remember.
B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D. People remember well what they learned in childhood.
34. The author explains the law of overlearning by _______.
A. presenting research findings B. setting down general rules
C. using examples D. making a comparison
35. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is _______.
A. a result of overlearning B. a special case of cramming
C. a skill to deal with math problems D. a basic step towards advanced studies
36. What is the author’s opinion on cramming
A. It leads to failure in college exams. B. It’s helpful only in a limited way.
C. It’s possible to result in poor memory. D. It increases students’ learning interest.
Section C (8%)
For the first time in history, we have a pretty good idea of the material content of the Universe, our position within it and how the whole thing came into being.
In these times of exploding knowledge there is a definite need to assemble what we know in a popular form. ___37___
The essays in The Scientific American Book of the Universe have been selected by David Levy, co-discoverer of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. ___38___
Nobody can put the blame on the range of articles Levy has included. There are essays on the planets, moons and various remains in the Solar System, and on our Galaxy (星系), the Milky Way (银河系). ___39___
So much for the book’s content. But Levy has not succeeded in providing an accurate combination of our current knowledge of the universe, which the book cover promises. Gathering together previously published articles inevitably leaves subject gaps, missing explanations and so on. ___40___. But there isn’t one. In fact, surprisingly for a book so densely packed with information, there is no index.
A. Tegmark fears he may hold the record for the longest time taken to read one book.
B. In a more positive manner, this is a wonderful collection of essays to dip in and out of if you already have a good summary of current planetary understanding.
C. Levy is an active astronomer and an accomplished writer, so you’d expect him to provide a broad and accurate picture of our current understanding of the universe.
D. Scientific American has attempted to meet this need by bringing together essays that have appeared in the magazine.
E. To some extent, these could have been with a glossary (词表) of terms.
F. Also included are contributions on the world of subatomic particles (次原子粒子), the origin of life on Earth and the possibility of its existence elsewhere.
