Shortly, Lily and her mother were back at the store. Lily’s heart was pounding, but her mother gave her the courage she needed. They approached the cashier desk, and with a trembling voice, Lily explained what she had done and admitted her mistake. The store owner, surprised by the little girl’s honesty, smiled kindly and praised her for her integrity. He even gave her a bag of candies as a reward for her bravery and honesty. Lily’s face lit up with relief and gratefulness as she handed over the money, feeling a heavy weight lift off her shoulders.
From that day on, Lily understood the importance of telling the truth. The experience taught her that honesty, even when it’s difficult, is always the best policy. She learned that while mistakes are part of life, it’s how we correct them that builds up our character. Lily’s mother’s support and the store owner’s understanding left a lasting impression on her. She promised never to let a “little white lie” cloud her judgment again. The pink candies incident remained a precious memory, a reminder of the power of truth and the warmth of a mother’s love in guiding her through life’s lessons.2024~2025学年第二学期福建省部分优质高中高二年级3月联考

A 23-year-old man can do weightlifting in many ways as hard as any other gym-goer,but he only has one leg. Nathan Seawood doesn’t let his disability keep him from the weight room. Instead, he’s learning to bear a different load.
“This isn’t just a physical battle in the gym,” Seawood said. “It’s a mental battle for myself.” Refusing to be weighed down by his disability, Seawood draws strength from his mind, as he fights to make it through each step. “That takes a lot out of me. I push my body so hard that I’m tired,” said Seawood, who once thought he might have to give up the weights forever.
Seawood ended up in a hospital bed with one leg after falling off a boat in Long Lake near Traverse City in June, 2019. His left leg got caught in the propeller and had to be cut.
“I didn’t want people to see me,” Seawood said. “I couldn’t accept what had happened to me because it’s a lifestyle change. And that was hard. I was down bad.”
Seawood said a therapist helped lift his spirits. “I wanted to be able to walk and that was difficult because I’m using muscles that never really get noticed as much,” Seawood said. Now he’s using those muscles to train hard at Grand Rapids City Gym, inspiring those around him to keep pushing.
“He faces difficulties most of us don’t have to,” Jeff Phillips, who owns the gym, said. “I mean, he’s in here and he only has one leg, but he’s doing a lot of the same lifts everybody with two legs are doing. It’s surely encouraging to see him doing that.”
Despite life’s best attempt to knock him down, Seawood is still standing, and while he may exercise differently from others, he’s thankful to still be moving. “I might have a disability, but I’m not disabled,” Seawood said.
24. What plays the key role in Seawood’s weightlifting
A. His right leg. B. The others’ encouragement. C. His strong will. D. His family.
25. What led to Nathan Seawood’s disability
A. An accident. B. An early birth. C. A serious disease. D. A medical mistake.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Nathan Seawood
A. Confident and honest. B. Smart and hardworking.
C. Calm and modest. D. Determined and positive.
27. Why is Jeff Phillips mentioned in paragraph 6
A. To tell Seawood’s sad story. B. To draw attention to weightlifting.
C. To speak highly of Seawood. D. To show sympathy for Seawood.
C
No one can say whether human-like robots will have a sweet dream, but they will almost certainly need periods of rest that offer benefits like what sleep provides to living brains, according to new research from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
“We study spiking neural networks (尖峰神经网络), which are systems that learn much as living brains do,” said Yijing Watkins, a computer scientist from LANL. “We trained a neuromorphic (神经形态的) processor in a way how humans and other biological systems learn from their environment during childhood development.” Watkins and her research team found that the network simulations (模拟) became unstable after continuous periods of unattended learning. When they exposed the networks to states that are analogous to what living brains experience during sleep, stability was recovered. “It was as though we were giving the neural networks a good night’s rest,” said Watkins.
The discovery came about as the research team worked to develop neural networks that are as close as how humans and other biological systems learn to see. The group initially struggled with stabilizing simulated neural networks undergoing unattended dictionary training, which involves classifying objects without providing examples to compare them to. The researchers expose the networks to an artificial simulation of sleep as nearly a final effort to stabilize them. They experimented with various types of noise. The best results came when they used waves of so-called Gaussian noise. These waves can make sure that the neural networks keep stable.
The group’s next goal is to apply their algorithm (算法) to Intel’s Loihi, a product which uses spiking neural networks to work. They hope allowing Loihi to sleep from time to time will enable it to stably process information from a camera in real time. If it can confirm the need for sleep in artificial brains, we can probably expect the same to be true of human-like robots and other intelligent machines that may come about in the future.
28. What did Watkins and her research team find
A. Neural networks are far from stable. B. Artificial brains may need break as well.
C. Neural networks are very sensitive to noise. D. Human-like robots need equal rest to humans.
29. What does the underlined word “analogous” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Contrary. B. Beneficial. C. Similar. D. Related.
30. Why will the researchers apply the algorithm to Loihi
A. To better update Loihi. B. To enable Loihi to run faster.
C. To further confirm their discovery. D. To make sure Loihi get enough sleep.
31. In which section can we probably find this article
A. Mind & Brain. B. Business & Industry. C. Medicine & Care. D. Computer & Science.

It is a well-known fact that plastic bottles, which take hundreds of years to rot, are harmful to our environment. However, efforts by environmentalists to encourage consumers to switch to alternatives, like water fountains or reusable bottles, have not been very effective. The U.S. alone uses over 50 million plastic bottles annually, 80% of which end up in landfills.
To try to stop that, Rodrigo García González, Pierre Paslier and Guillaume Couche from the Imperial College London have been working on a revolutionary solution — water wrapped inside an eatable container made mostly from seaweed. All the customer has to do to relieve his/her thirst is pop the entire drop into the mouth.
The inventors, who have been working on the Ooho bubble since 2014, use a simple two-step cooking process called spherification (球化) to create the delicate container. They begin by dipping a frozen ball of water or juice into a chemical solution (溶液). This helps form a layer around the liquid. The ball is then absorbed in a solution made from seaweed extract. This creates a second layer, helping strengthen the structure so that the water or juice does not leak. In addition to saving our environment, the biodegradable (可降解的) packaging costs just two cents each, making it cheaper to produce than plastic.
After three years of perfecting the design, the inventors, who recently raised over 1 million USD from a financial activity, are ready to bring the Ooho bubble to local market. However, there are a few challenges that still need to be overcome before the product’s launch. In addition to getting accustomed to the taste of the covering, each eatable container contains just a mouthful of water, requiring consumers to drink multiple bubbles to relieve their thirst. There is also the issue of finding an eco-friendly packaging to transport the bubbles so that they remain clean and do not burst. Hopefully, the inventors will find ways to handle the issues so that we can reduce, or perhaps even remove, plastic bottles.
32. Why was the Ooho bubble created
A. To test a newly-designed material. B. To change consumers’ drinking habit.
C. To reduce pollution caused by plastic. D. To take a share of drinking water industry.
33. What will the inventors probably do next
A. Solve some specific problems of the product. B. Collect more money to expand production.
C. Distribute the Ooho bubble to global market. D. Advertise the advantages of the Ooho bubble.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the Ooho bubble’s launch
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Confident. D. Opposed.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Scientists Work out a New Kind of Water B. Plastic Bottles Will Be Replaced by the Ooho Bubble
C. Environmental Pollution is Expected to Be Solved D. The Ooho Bubble Aims to Remove Plastic Bottles

Eight-year-old Lily was a curious little girl who loved exploring the world around her. One day, Lily’s mother asked her to go to the store to buy some groceries. Excited by the thought of being responsible, Lily happily walked along the streets, her small steps filled with purpose and enthusiasm. The sun was shining, and the air was filled with the scent (香味) of freshly baked bread from the nearby bakery, adding to her excitement.
As Lily walked into the store, she noticed a beautiful container of pink candies on the cashier’s desk. The candies were wrapped in sparking wrappers, and they seemed to call out to her. She really wanted to buy them. However, there was one problem-she didn’t have enough money to pay.
Then, Lily came up with an idea. She told herself it was just a little white lie and that no one would ever know. It seemed like a simple solution to her dilemma (困境). She quickly put the candies into her shopping bag and paid for the groceries, hoping that her secret would be safe.
That evening, Lily couldn’t help but feel regretful in her heart. The excitement of the day had faded, replaced by a heavy feeling of guilt. She knew that what she had done wasn’t right. Her conscience (良知) was eating away at her, causing her to lose sleep and feel restless. The candies, once a source of joy, now sat heavily in her stomach, a reminder of her actions.
The next morning, Lily’s mother noticed her daughter’s troubled expression and asked her what was wrong. Lily hesitated for a moment, the weight of her secret almost too much to bear. But then, the truth poured out of her mouth like a waterfall.
“Mom, I have something to tell you,” Lily said, tears welling up in her eyes, “I took some candies from the store without paying for them. I'm really sorry.” Her voice was small, but the sincerity in her words was clear.
Her mother’s face softened, and she pulled Lily into a warm hug. “Lily, I am proud of you for telling me the truth,” her mother said gently. “But it’s important to understand that lying, even about something small, can hurt others and ourselves. Let’s go back to the store and make things right.”
