Covered by snow and ice, Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest and most mysterious continent (大陆) on Earth. However, this wild place still attracts people who wish to go there.
Antarctica is a good place to research the land, ocean, air, ice shelves and biology. Antarctica also has rich sources (资源产区) of coal, fresh water and seafood.
More than 30 countries have built research stations in Antarctica. During the past 40 years, China has built these stations: Changcheng, Zhongshan, Taishan, Kunlun and Qinling.

However, they do more than just research. The scientists there have found many ways to relax. At Zhongshan Station, for example, there is a field where they can play basketball, volleyball and badminton. Zhongshan Station is not far from stations built by Russia, India and Australia. Sometimes, people from the four stations will meet and hold big parties and sports events.

Sirish Subash, a 14-year-old student from Snellville, Georgia, US, recently won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
He made a tool that can find pesticides (农药) on fruits and vegetables. This won him $25,000 (about 180,000 yuan) and the title (称号) of “Best Young Scientist in America”.
Subash’s idea for the tool came from a simple yet important question. His mother always told him to wash fruit before eating it. The boy wondered if the action did any good.
He learned that 70 percent of fruits and vegetables have pesticides. They can bring possible health problems like cancer. Washing only gets away part of the pesticides.
“If we could find them, we could avoid eating them and lower the risk of those health problems,” Subash said.
This led Subash to invent PestiSCAND. It is a small tool that people can take with them. It works by shining lights and seeing how light reflects off food. With the help of a sensor (传感器), a screen and an AI learning model, the tool can find out if there are pesticides around.
To use it, users must point PestiSCAND at the fruit or vegetable to see if they need to wash it again. They can check the results in an app on their phones. During testing, PestiSCAND was right more than 85 percent of the time in finding pesticides.
Subash plans to improve his tool and hopes to get it to market by the time he starts college.
33. What drove Subash to create his tool
A. His interest in AI technology.
B. A news article about pesticides.
C. The pesticides he saw on fruits and vegetables.
D. His mother’s advice to wash fruit before eating it.

A. where PestiSCAND works B. the importance of PestiSCAND
C. how PestiSCAND works D. the role AI plays in PestiSCAND
35. How can people use the tool
A. By pointing it at the fruit to get information.
B. By putting it into water to wash the fruit.
C. By putting the fruit inside PestiSCAND.
D. By pointing it at an app on their phones.

Every year, wildfires destroy tens of thousands of square kilometers of forest land. People lose their homes. Some are hurt or even killed. Smokejumpers help to stop this.
Smokejumpers are special firefighters. Some fires are in hard-to-reach places, such as in the middle of a mountain forest. These firefighters jump from planes or are lowered into those areas by helicopter (直升机).
When they arrive, smokejumpers first check the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main duty is to prevent the fire from spreading until other firefighters arrive. Smokejumpers use shovels (铲子) or axes (斧头) to clear the land of burnable things, like dry grass and dead trees. They carry water with them too, but not a lot.
Although most smokejumpers are men, more women are joining now. The most important factors (因素) are height and weight. Smokejumpers in the U.S., for example, must be between 54 and 91 kilograms. This way, they don’t get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land. Smokejumpers also need to know how to survive in the wild. In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees.
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires and live in the forest. Wang Yaming is a 28-year-old Chinese smokejumper. He says, “This is the best job for tough guys (硬汉).”

Hello, everybody!
I think computers are very important as well as helpful in our lives.
First of all, we use computers to do a lot of things such as typing, drawing and listening to music. More importantly, we can operate railways like underground and fly planes or spaceships. What’s more, on the Internet we can get information as much as we can. We can send e-mails to our friends and talk to them as well. In addition, if there were no computers around us, our lives would be inconvenient or uninteresting. Last but not least, we must remember computers should be used for study or work not for computer games. We should make good use of computers.
In a word, I believe that computers will surely become our best helpers in the near future.
That’s all. Thanks for your listening!
